There is no such thing as to "much sensors" and keep in mind that Ngreed GPUs report all their sensors measurements using the proprietary API called NvAPI and all the developers of hwinfo and such software need documentation on how to talk to that API and there is A LOT of secrecy and NDA stuff so NGREEDIA is probably hiding away A LOT of sensors from their GPUs as which is very bad.

The lesson to take here is: Don't change your thermal pads unless you have identical height/consistency replacements. And like you said Jay, unless you have a problem already that you need to fix, you're better off leaving your laptop alone rather than repasting it.
@kalmtraveler
@kalmtraveler Жыл бұрын
really a YMMV situation. I've repasted every laptop I've owned as well as any non-Apple work laptops I've been issued and the temps always come down. Bulk manufactured laptops often don't have great thermal paste application from the factory, and/or don't use the most conductive paste (usually something cheap that they got a good bulk deal on) so if you are able to repaste properly you *can* get lower temps even on a brand new laptop. The takeaway here to me is more "be careful and make 110% sure you know what you're doing and why".

@@kalmtraveler just because the temps always come down doesn't mean they *needed* to come down. For 99% of users it's not worth the work and risk of messing something else up. It's the difference between "can" and "should"

@@NickCharles jumping into a very very vague area. A 'problem' may not be apparent until an improvement is sought - and to your point for 99% of users don't 'need' to do most of the things they do. Discussions are best framed within a set of circumstances, a specific audience, etc - and given the KZbin channel here, I think it would be a safe bet than more than 1% of Jay's viewers are folks who enjoy building/tinkering with computers to try to get the most out of them. That being said, you are correct that hotter-than-necessary temps in a laptop didn't 'need' to come down. As the laptop owner, I 'wanted' them to come down so the fans wouldn't run loudly for no reason and so the laptop lasts longer. The laptop itself had no need to run cooler and quieter - it would have been just as happy to slow-roast itself into an early e-waste grave, but I had other intentions.

I have liquid metal on my die to the IHS and I'm concerned about that enough, as it's an upright, stationary build. There is pads that go between liquid and a semi-solid material, and it's non-conductive. It's called PTM7950. Closest thing to liquid metal without being dangerous to move.

Normally, the thermal paste thickness goes below 0.03 mm to achieve good contact between the die and cooler, so it basically has no tolerance to any gap variation. In this case, the laptop manufacture want to improve cooling for the memory chips by reduce the gap below 0.5 mm so that no thermal pad is suitable, and they use thermal putty for instead. The difference between thermal paste and thermal putty is that after compress thermal putty want to retain its uncompressed shape, generating reaction force to ensure good contact with surfaces, while thermal paste don't has such reaction force, so it could loose contact easily with bit of move and twist.

Hi Jay. Whenever I try to solve a PC problem, I usually end up with two or more problems I must solve. When I worked on car engines, way back when, I used a product that looked like a long squishable worm. I placed a length of it where two parts joined. After I tightened the parts to the proper torque, I separated the parts and used an included scale to measure the gap. This procedure showed me if the gap between the pieces was within the allowed tolerance range. A product like this would let you see if the pads were being compressed correctly and if you needed thicker or thinner pads. This is just a thought of mine, and your mileage might vary. Anyway, I always watch your videos and am happy I subscribe to your channel. P.S. Please make an updated video about the Test Apps. you use and where I can download them and not end up with a malware problem.

I wonder if contact isn't actually the issue here. I wonder if when you have good contact on the memory, it adds to the total heat load and the cooler just simply can't dump that much heat when combined with the GPU, so the GPU temps suffer as a result. When you're not properly cooling the memory, more of the cooler can work to cool the GPU alone so you get better temps. Thoughts?

I've had this same issue with some Assus laptops and the finite solution for me was to measure the gap using plastigauge and machine a copper wafer to take up the space between the cooling element and the memory. We're talking about sub mm dimensions, so totally out of people's hands, BUT, where there's a will there's a way. A thin wafer of copper can be sanded down to the right dimensions with enough patience. I've had no issues with those laptops so far. There are hundreds of repair videos with people replacing dead VRAMs in newer graphics cards due to extremely poor VRAM cooling. 95C or above is not acceptable for GDDR6/GDDR5. The VRAMs are rated for 95C at maybe 5000h or so. Running lower temperatures will increase the longevity Also KPX might not be a good thermal compound for that laptop. It's too much of a temperature delta between idle and load. It will pump out. Use PTM7950 for maximum stability

If I questioned thermal compound contact, I'd try seating a cooler and removing it to visibly confirm it; the rest of the laptop case doesn't normally squeeze the heatsink down. Clevo laptops have had people finding ways to modify its cooler contact pressure to get more and more even contact, sometimes just by adding leverage onto support arms and such in previous years.

I wonder if Speedway was raising the temp because it is a stress test and designed to do so, while games (or Windows 11) might use something similar to DirectCU (remember that?) to hold thermal temps close to max without truly thermal throttling and/or making the temperature variance less stable.

Awesome video. I have an MSI laptop i7-9xxx series with a "2060" , so it's a few years old and been used quite a bit, and it's really loud, and I wanna take it apart and re-paste.. Now, I'm just going to see if MSI has the replacement pads ahead of time, lol. I'm gonna do it, even if I have to use that putty fill that I've seen Roman and others use. I also wanna redo my gpu in my desktop.

At least one potential part of the reason they don't have them tilt up like that is the likely hood of the tilting breaking but also having a tilted keyboard will cause carpel tunnel over time.

I think what EK meant was putting a dropon the phase regulator and then cover it with the thermal pad.

With such a small gap difference, couldn't you just use a tiny bit more thermal paste on the GPU for better connectivity, or is it a matter of pressure?

I've read info sheets placed in a few laptops I've had "don't use on Laptop on your Lap as bottom gets hot and it may obstruct air entering the device! So whys it called a laptop if your not supposed to have it on your lap! They have also stated don't put it on bed covers, table cloths, towels etc as may block air vent on bottom causing over heating and poor performance.

And this is why TG-PP10 is amazing and it's a shame they stopped making it. It has better conductivity rating than quite a few thermal pads, perfect height every time with literally no guessing, and it cleans up fairly easily (Far easier than K5 Pro).

I've seen this on multiple laptops and some discrete GPUs... They design it to barely keep the memory from overheating and let the core boost up to whatever it can get with the cooler. They use cheap pads with poor thermal conductivity and good contact for a reason. When you swap out those poor pads for really good ones, you're allowing more of the heat from those memory chips into the cooler, which means the core can't boost as high. A hunk of metal can only dissipate so much heat, increasing the thermal transfer doesn't magically increase the amount of heat the cooler can handle, it will just affect everything attached to it quicker. The only time I would mess with the stock pads is if the card is already overheating, or if your card has a separate heat pipe/dedicated cooling for the memory that is not connected to the die cooling.

Could it not be heat transfer from the memory now that it's getting proper cooling ?

depending on how many players are standing in town with you, as the way its coded.. you have to load every item for every character in range. So it would be Diablo 4's shoddy code preventing him from being able to recreate it. Its not a hardware issue, its a software one..

Gddr 6 is honestly fine running at 110. Whilst personally I wouldn't be happy with this and try and find the best thermal pads or paste to reduce this, usually it's no issue.

Jay, don't use the power brick, power bricks generate heat all by themselves. Use stacks of quarters, or the edge of a book, or even room temperature waffles. Any of these would bring more accurate results.
