The argument that Apple's IP is at risk for sharing a schematic is absolutely insane. The secret sauce is internal to each SOC on the board, the specifics of which would not be visible on a board schematic. The simple discrete components such as capacitors, resistors, diodes, et cetera can be reverse engineered extremely easily without schematics.

Instead of encouraging your family to read ebooks, encourage them to visit your local library. You get the benefits of feeling physical books withouth having them take space in your home. Also there's only single energy cost to print them instead of having servers/tablets make/keep multiple copies of the same ebook. Win win!
@stormburn12 жыл бұрын
I wonder how the math would work out on the energy savings. Tablets have benefits beyond ebooks and relatively low energy requirements (especially e-ink devices). Servers for storing/distributing them also should be pretty trivial because they're tiny, infrequently downloaded files. Meanwhile going to the library almost certainly requires driving (in North America because we're a continent for cars, not people) which seems like it'd almost immediately overwhelm the tablet/ebook and server energy usage.

First party repaid handle a huge amount of clients and the technical staff have to be huge which results in tons of low skilled workers and to avoid a bad reputation and speedup the process and to avoid errors they replace "parts" with known working once made in the factory. 3rd party repair are usually made up off small teams being very dedicated to what they do which means they can actually findout what caused the problem and spend the time to solve it. Am I missing something here? They are talking like releasing schematics day one would cause replica’s to increase exponentially. But this isn’t true, if you want to make a clone of something you x-ray the board, most chips have what they are printed on them, and resistors & caps could just be measured. So replicating another companies hardware wouldn’t require anything more than buying the device. I mean the people that wouldn’t have the time/money to reverse engineer a product also likely wouldn’t have the time/money to actually produce a clone at any level of scale. So what is the argument here?
@hishnash2 жыл бұрын
It has never been about duplicates the reason you cant release schematics is if you do that you cant use some of the big name components who's data sheets are not public and thus to buy the parts you need to sign very strict NDAs that include info about what voltages etc are needed to run these parts. Intel would sue Framework into the ground if they released full schematics as the data sheets for these types of complex components are not public and if framework released thier schematics that would be in effect sharing info that is currently under NDA.
@connorblack992 жыл бұрын
It’s a complicated situation all around. Many big name component makers will not license their products to people without requiring an NDA/business agreement of some sort to keep their particular component details secret. Additionally, the value proposition of analysis and reverse engineering many products isn’t worth the hassle to some counterfeiters, but as soon as that information is freely available it would change the balance of that choice. It would become less a question of “is it worth it to do research to copy product x” to “which of these products will cost the least to copy” Now personally, I’m pretty... out there with my opinions on copyright law, trademark law, economic systems... but I can see why a company might fear the information being out there

@@connorblack99 the reason benchers like Nvidia require NDAs is not about them being worried stuff will leak its about controle over the products that use their parts.

Companies, with the money they have, can easily reverse engineer or just straight up analyze the product to get what's worth having out of it themselves so I don't see how not providing schematics would be compromising to a company's IP.

When there is a massive lead time for development, those hardware schematics can be more valuable than you think
@matthewshields2 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderkhan9097 if companies were to release schematics, it would probably be with a consumer launch or a short time after. Even if a competitor used schematics in their own design, they would still be affected by the long lead times and it probably wouldn't save them much time over reverse engineering a product.
@hishnash2 жыл бұрын
Its never about revers engining ist about component makers wanting to controle the OEM relationships. Intel for example does not publicly publish the chips set and cpu socket operating voltages etc so that is all under an NDA that you must sign and thus cant share! So If you share a schematic with this info your in breach of this NDA. But doing this intel ensure that anyone wanting to make a product with an intel cpu in it needs to sign a contract with them this gives them a LOT of control and that is what they want. (not just intel, also AMD, Nvidia and many other IC makers want this controle so they do not publish public spec sheets of the components but instraed share this under very strict NDA terms). for framework if they were to breach this im sure the penalty cost would completely bankrupt them and they would almost certainly have C level staff end up in prison (yes breaching these NDAs can lead to prison time as its considered steaming trade secrets).... to make this clear Intel do not do this to stop AMD from knowing this info they do it to controle who uses intel chips and ensure that everyone who uses intel chips must buy them directly from intel!

I still buy Haynes manuals when I buy vehicles . I don’t get brand new cars so idk if they make them still. But I’ve overhauled an engine only off the info in them.
@Woodie-xq1ew Жыл бұрын
I’m sure in days gone by the manufacturers worked with Haynes to make those manuals. Whereas today they get no help, if people like Haynes make a good manual then people won’t need to take their cars back to the stealership to be serviced

7:52 i watched Rossman's video on the schematics. And I said there, I think if they waited 1 year before releasing the full schematics that would be a good compromise. Presumably it's under warranty at that point, and hopefully there aren't any major repairs and things that need done in that time. And then they have a year where competitors just can't straight up copy them easily. Maybe 6 months? Idk. I know part of it is for diy people too. But, methinks if I'm diy I wouldn't be in such a hurry that I could wait 6-12 months for the full schematic to do what I want to do. Presumably it's a long term thing and not a quick prototype. And in the future, there will always be the year's prior laptop that I could buy if I wanted schematics immediately

IP professional here, there are already IP rights specifically for board designs. In the UK these are called semiconductor topography rights and generally give 10 years protection. Seems to exist in Canada too under a different name under the Integrated Circuit Topography Act. For the women’s merch, the small LTT logos now included on the clothes are nice, but I’m not convinced by the bigger ‘tech tips’ lettering. Any chance we can get the items with the small LTT logo but without the lettering?

I remember the first car I purchased that still had a manufacturer's warranty, which was a 2003 Kia Sedona. I was pretty impressed to learn that they provided their service manuals online for free. They had taken the manuals down by the time I actually needed it, which turned me off to the brand, though I was very happy with the van until it was in a minor fender bender and got totaled (because vans don't really hold their value for very long, even if they are super low mileage). Unfortunately, my wife loved the Dodge Journey, which is engineered to make even the most minor things a major pain in the butt. I was able to purchase the service manual for an older truck on Ebay for a few bucks, which was nice.

I turned one of my spare bedrooms into a theater room, it was on a budget so I used affordable options, like a pioneer vsx 1131 receiver that I got on Black Friday for $300, bookshelf speakers are 25 bucks each, a $200 12-in subwoofer, etc. For the walls I just bought king size blankets and sheets, thumb tack them to the walls, that absorbs most of the light and sound so there's no echo in the room. And then I bought some cheap single person recliners, and for less than the price of a moderately sized television, built an entire theater that never makes you want to go to the movies ever again!

If Framework made a laptop with a dedicated GPU, that'd be my next upgrade.
@alexanderkhan90972 жыл бұрын
Just curious: given that any given laptop's GPU will always be throttled by their form factor (ie temp, power, etc), what, in your opinion, makes a laptop's GPU measurably good enough to warrant buying? At what point do you sacrafrice portabilitity for raw GPU performance? Because you'll never have the best of both worlds. It's always going to be one or the other.
@matthewshields2 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderkhan9097I don't care about top tier performance and I don't necessarily want to buy multi-thousand dollar laptop and a desktop. Probably the most useful thing for manufacturers to provide in regards to repair is a board view that shows all the components and gives them labels (with enough detail to know exactly what part you need to buy to replace it). Its not like they have to give out all the secrets (they can still do the old trick of giving an otherwise off the shelf part a proprietary marking to hide what it really is plus most of the secrets are internal to the chip and not something you can find out by looking at schematics)

For reference, Vanta black and black 3.0 are two VERY different things. Vanta black is made using a mat of carbon nanotubes that absorb light by trapping inbetween the tubes and allowing it to be absorbed into the substrate. It's a patented technology by Surrey Nanosystems and is very, very expensive, so I very much doubt you'd even contemplate using it for a domestic theatre.

You can hide the specific part numbers of ICs in a schematic easily while still providing 100% repairability. That simply requires that manufacturers have a parts department that is accessible to anyone and permits ordering those parts. Publicly available schematics makes that even easier; you can label the ICs with a basically arbitrary code specific only to you and your schematic, and you can order "IC #4 from schematic ABC-DEF." That isn't even necessarily limited to ICs of course, though I think it'd kind of be a waste of effort to similarly code every little capacitor and diode on a PCBA.

I get it but settle down, what other car comes with a service manual, service manual, not owners manual? Chilton and Haynes are a thing and have been for over 50 years, none of those come with any car unless it’s some used car the previous owner bought the book for and threw it in with the sale. And now with the internet we have Alldata DIY but even that requires a subscription.

One of my problems with mainstream 17" laptops is that they typically have higher end CPUs that cost more. They can use the same Motherboard, just put extenders to reach the module connections. The extra space could also be used for more battery or m.2 space.
