@@starseeddeluxe the date is helpful as belts also have a lifespan in years, when the belt manufacturer suggests replacing due to time. 5, 7 or 10 years depending. Some documentation is better than none, but I’d say both is best.

Consider taking a motorcycle safety course. All it requires is 4 days to convert your permit into a licence. I don't know where you live, but in PA the state even funds it.

I used to draw up allot of diagrams (especially wiring) before digital cameras existed...also tag allot of stuff with masking tape & marker....cameras/phones = very handy tool to document assemblies before taking them apart ...Big plus for long term projects...i.e. weeks or months go by before getting back to repair projects...

Before you pull the plugs out blow out the drain holes at the bottom of those plug channels. They get plugged up and those channels will fill with water and ground your plugs out causing misfire. My 83 Moldwing used to do that constantly.

cut the original belt in 1/2 - 3/4 of the width for the whole run of the belt leaving the remainder at the rear of the pullys, this holds all the pullys in sync'. Slide the new belt on far enough to hold the pullys synched' then cut the old belt off and side on new belt fully, re tension and good to go.

I happen to own a 2005 Honda GL1800, timing belt is a chain with no recommended change interval but your tip for removing a rubber belt is terrific!

As a professional auto service technician I can say I have definitely done the same on cars (accidentally swap plug wires) it's if you think it's nerve wracking on your own stuff try having a customer waiting for their car and have it run like crap when you get done.

I learned alot from goldwing docs!! Great resource for tge 1500. If you haven't replaced the steering head bearings don't be afraid of it. You can do it! Fork seals are easy as well!

Just a quick comment. I just changed the timing belts on my 1994 GL1500. The word “DONE” was also written on the inside behind the timing cover. It may be a coincidence but probably a factory quality assurance inspector doing their job.

Advice: Mark your spark plug wires with a silver Sharpie or chalk. One mark on the first boot, two marks on the second boot, three marks on the third boot. . .you get the idea. Or just replace one spark plug at a time. That works too.

I just changed mine the other day, put about 55-60k on the belts since the previous owner changed them. I see folks remove the rad hose, I didn't just need to remove the timing inspection cover, then the LH cover slides in and out easily, and I could get to what I needed to change it, sprayed a little WD on the cam pully and the belts slide on, I removed both ign sensors, cleaned them up, timing seem's better, I had this random ignition drop issue, hoping that fixed and it's not a carb issue. both idlers felt good, bike seems to have a bit more pep, which I'm surprised because the belts didn't seem too loose before I removed them. Next I need to check my left side head/rocker/lifter hydraulic adjusters, I think they are a bit clogged. I've been using HP4 oil and well, I think I'm gonna try the Rotella Oil.

When I took the MSF course, my instructor had 3 gold wings all with 200,000 miles plus, guy lived on those bikes, road year round in Illinois. Goes to show if you take care of them then run forever.

I bought my 86 gl1200 interstate for 1200, I've replaced both tires,timing belts, starter, and all the other little things you gotta do with an oldwing. 106k and and only a little bit of bottom end and clutch noise

It happens. At one time I owned my own Fab and mechanic shop and a really good mechanic I've worked with for different companies called me because he did a weekend engine replacement and had to go to work, but the motor was running horrible. I went over to his place and the most common issue you run into on those old engines was the problem. The distributor was in 180° out. 20 min later I gave the keys back to his wife and instead of charging him I kept it as razz material for a couple of years. 😄

GL1500, one of the best built bikes, ever. a few small PITA bits, (changing rear tires. bleeding brakes) other than that they are a breeze to work on. Take the Tupperware off a couple times, and you won't even dread that any longer. Changing the belts on a Valkryie is even easier, as there is no need to drain coolant or remove any hoses. (Or remove the radiator as on the GL1000/1100/1200)

The two most difficult and time-consuming things I've found on my GL1500 are replacing the carbs and replacing the rear tire. The 1200 and 1800 models allow you to lay your bike in the ditch on soft ground to remove and replace the rear wheel. Not so for the 1500! You have to have a lift and plan to spend some time. With the carbs, you have to take most of the front and middle off the bike and get to the top of the motor. Then keeping up with all the hoses involved with the specialty of how the carbs work takes it's toll. Not difficult, but you need a few tools to make the job easier (long pliers and screwdrivers....as in 18" or longer) and you need to take your time to not mix up the hoses or cables. But yes, most of the Goldwing 1500 tasks are simple, and just intimidating from all the plastic bits that cover what you need to get to. Now I'm about to rebuild the forks on mine, and I also plan to be at the "Get On! Moto Fest". Maybe we'll run into each other?

Funny. I've always wanted Goldwing...and bought a really clean one last year mostly due to you prodding me. 1993 gl1500 aspencade with a trailer for a song. Unfortunately no service record. Replaced the belts myself this spring. Ran like absolute shit afterwards. Tore it all apart again and made sure everything was dead nuts on...still shit. Yep I managed to swap 2 of the plug wires on the left side. Thank goodness was an easy fix.

I lost a chance to buy an 86 1200 Wing, it needed a stator & a mechanic buddy of mine (also a gold wing owner) told me WE could do it in a day, that is stator, water pump and timing belts

Weird things found on motorcycles.. at junkyard looking for a suzuki 450 electric part. Under the seat was a small cassette recorder. In that was 3.. 8 balls. Of all the bikes there.. lol. So 8 bucks .

The ease of changing the Timing Belt is a kid could do it... the risk if something goes wrong... that is another if you didn't line it up. A car that I got when I got it home did the normal swap everything, even if the last owner said it got done thing. Only 1 of the spark plugs was tight... 5 loose, of which 3 had soot up the plug holes. That said when going on the test drive checked the oil it wasn't even touching the dipstick, added 2L or so before it even touched the tip and 5L total to get to the low mark.

The GL1500 is such cool motorcycle, and such a good value. The only thing that is a deal breaker is that pin striping, which seems to be a standard feature on all the GL1500's. Without the pin striping, they could be restored to a new luster. But that haphazard and out of place pin striping is a bit unusual. Nobody would let an artist anywhere near their bike with that pin striping in 2024. Please make more videos with an update if you can?

Trick for timing belts is to mark the old belt and transfer the marks onto the new belt. There’s no guessing if you did it right that way

Look up the short way to get rear tire off. The entire ass end will pivot if you take seat off then few bolts inside bags. Lose two bolts tgat mount the bag Fram to tge bike and it will all just swing up. Now with all your lights you obviously have to watch wires but it is doable.

The left belt is easy. The right belt always wants to be one tooth off. It due to the tensioner position on the right belt.

Look up the procedure for changing the alternator stator on a goldwing. Many have been junked because of that one.

Need tires, huh? I just darksided my 96 gl1500. Haven't even put the bodywork back on yet, so I can't tell you if I like the effect or not. All I can be sure of so far is that I DON'T like the extra work. Have you considered trying that on yours? We can compare results.

Hey Josh, you should go "darkside" on the Bangkok Bagger, since you say you need new tyres anyway. Lots of videos on youtube about Goldwings going darkside. Saves you a ton of money and increases your mileage and your traction in rain. What more could you want? Stay in there man. Keep it weird and the greasy side down..
