The average gym lifter emphasizes the difficulty of their workout. Elite level lifters evaluate their training based on the effectiveness of the session instead. Let’s explore the difference.

I've been diving into the ideas of Mike Mentzer relative to my training, and I have to say, there's a lot of merit to it. The effectiveness of the session itself trumps the overall "perceived" difficulty and or intensity of the workout. If you only need 2, maybe 3 effective sets of an exercise to stimulate adaptation, then that's all you ACTUALLY need. Beyond this is minimal gains for even more fatigue build up.

I haven't recorded and shared any of my lifts consistently for over 3-4 years. I can tell you that my focus and ability to stay in the moment while lifting has sky-rocketed, so much so that I no longer lift with music or any external stimulants outside of black coffee. Not saying this is necessary for all, but for myself, it allows me to REALLY dial in and put all my attention and energy into every single rep of every single set.

I think the key takeaway is that training isn't always meant to be exciting or extremely intense, but rather to be used as a stepping stone towards your ultimate goal

Great point here. Once my headphones go in, I'm ready to move. I'll do a brief warmup with some 90/90 bracing, dead bugs, bird dogs, shoulder mobilization with a light band, and then I'm into it. Brendan Tietz talks about being in a "flow state" once you get into your warmups. Be precise, stay focused, and keep moving. I noticed that when I tested my maxes about a month ago, I was even faster than usual warming up (extra caffeine assisted in that), mainly because I was so focused on the goal. Quality matters in bodybuilding just as much as strength sports. I see so much poor training quality at the gym.

bro I was just watching some stupid ass fitness KZbinr drama content and now I'm watching this video and it's such a breathe of fresh air. I appreciate your attitude toward lifting and stuff (kinda like what you described in the video titled 'I don't care what you leg press' or something), just a grounded and real way of looking at things.

I haven't even paid attention to how I train. I get in with earplugs and have music playing, do the set and sit looking at a timer run and listening to the music until it's time to go again. There's not many people in the gym usually, but I have no idea how they perceived me or who was there. And the phone is only there to use the timer. But I like the sets and I like finding the way to hit the target muscles really well and finding that powerful groove where you just burst out of the hole.

The topic of focus and being present is a universally useful skill.. but it’s hard and so individually unique to each person. What are the thoughts that distract us? The thoughts that tell us we can’t do it? Actively trying not to think has the opposite effect. So what can we do? Again I find everyone has their own method. For many it is music. Deep breathing is another. For myself I try to embrace the thoughts I have and saying “it’s ok to have them”. Then I try to think of a rival, or an ex, or something that can emotionally spur me to push further.

Everything mentioned in this video is standard common sense for long time lifters, lets say anyone over 45. Back in the 80s when I started out in a real gym, no cameras, no headsets, hell no AC, and actually only 2 women. (Now I'm definitely not against women in the gym and actually see more women putting in the necessary effort than the guys but lets face it when a girl is in there with jog bra and yoga pants its a major distraction for most guys). Back to the gym veterans, we know we are in the gym for a specific reason to accomplish a specific goal. I'm not worried about who is watching me or who is filming, I'm not bullshitting for 5+ minutes between sets, I have respect for fellow members and willing to help someone who asks. Oh how I miss the old gyms :)

The warmup speed thing is big. I took ~1000 recently and the bar, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 plate sets took me about 5 minutes total (load bar, rep, rack, load bar, rep, rack, etc no resting/wasting time) then I gave it 5 minutes between each set after. If I spent a while on those early sets too I would've just been tired and not in the mood to perform by the time I got to my top weight. People ought to rapid fire the lighter weights in their warmup scheme and see how good it feels keeping the body moving at a faster pace for sure.
