I have Starlink like yours on an off grid house at 8000 feet elevation in Golorado. The dish on the roof of my house just withstood 80 mph winds for two days and nights. The Starlink worked perfectly.

Ruth, your channel found its way to my KZbin recommended list, so as I enjoy van/DIY/tech/outdoor stuff, decided to take a look - and am so glad I did. I have this evening binge-watched many of your episodes, and will continue to do so over the coming days. Love your approach, your frankness and honesty, and your fabulous desire to learn and just get on with what needs doing. One thing I might add perhaps as thought for the future... maybe consider getting an amateur radio license and use a small handheld or even a car installed amateur radio (or both). Appreciate this might be for another time, but might be worth considering as there's many of us amateur radio users about. Keep up the great work. John (GW3JVB)

@@ruthaisling Hi Ruth - it is for two way radio communications. Taking and passing the RSGB (Radio Society of GB) examinations, in three levels, grants you privilege to use the relevant amateur radio frequencies (overseen by OFCOM) at the power level associated with your level of qualification - Foundation, Intermediate and Full. With any level you get your own call sign (mine is GW3JVB) and at what's termed the foundation level, you can use a handheld radio transceiver or even a vehicle mounted transceiver to communicate with other amateur radio enthusiasts who might be within a 50/60 mile range! Of course, I am simplifying the process, but it is a great hobby, and one that when remote, can come in extremely useful! Please do shout if you want to find out more or need any additional info, more than happy to help. John.

Hi Ruth, I’ve heard about Starlink but you have done all the figures, well done. I have 2 SIM card routers and external antenna but it does rely on getting a signal. Up the West coast of Scotland it can be a problem but it’s getting better these days, I have an EE contract and a 3 12Gb per month cost about £40/month, EE is better as 3 only give you 12Gb in the EU, I had unlimited in Spain earlier this year but we can’t go now for more than 90days. You download speed is fantastic with Starlink I don’t get anything like that but it’s ok for Netflix and news etc via our Amazon Fire Stick. From Durness down to the Kyle mine worked fine. I think with your nature of work Starlink is the best option even with the purchase price, one of my routers Netgear M2 was £400ish on Amazon. If you can stop payment when you’re not using it that is really good. Enjoyed your video, great stuff, Cheers Mike🍷

Your downland speeds are amazing and comparable with internet service one gets here in the States. I lived briefly in Thurso back in 2008, in the days of 3G cellphone service and I didn't get speeds any where near your numbers today. My sister lives in southeast Alaska and Starlink is very popular where she is. It's a Godsend to those who live outside of the larger towns. Good luck with your travels and be safe.

Starlink is becoming popular on boats and ships too. The monthly cost on their 5Tb package is $5,000 per month then $2 per gb over. It sounds a lot but considering 5Tb on VSAT is around $85,000 - $249 per 3gb, you can see why it's becoming popular on yachts. There is a cheaper Starlink maritime package which is $250 for 50gb. So all in all your monthly Starlink cost isn't too bad. Not to mention Starlink Maritime equipment is $2,500 but VSAT equipment is around $35,000.

Frpom Canada: I am a retorewd electronic technician in the greater Montreal area. 1) My pysical mount is for a flat roof, ands is slightly similar to what you showed. Hopwever, in stead of uisiong a treipod stand, I built a cross of treated timers resulting ina base footpront of anout 4' X 4'. Some safety precautions: a mount of this size is likely to require more than one able bodied person to get tis up and installed on the roof. Also, this must be well away from electric wiring drops! Additionally for protection agains being blown about in winter storms. on top of the cross about 60 Kg. of crused rock, bagged and sealed, and two cement blocks have been placxed covering all 4 extensions of the wooden cross, so as to keep it anchored in rough weather. In Mntreal, makor storms can be expected to start about the 3rd week of November, m nand not sure of any ledtup until aboput the thoird week of March, except that has become a rainstorm season with high winds and occasional tornadoes. The traditiona american tornado allet is moving north and east, so tornadoes, ppreviouslty infrequent in Canada havce become an added weather scourge in Parts of Ontario and Quebec. Having survived a small tornado in Pennsylvanis in 1974, I ceretsainly don't wish any more of thst (avoiding detailed experience here!). That was more like an EF-1, far less than what hoir Moore OK back during Barack Obama's adminisration. In the summer it can go as high as32 degrees C. with humidity, so we Watch the weather! I have a couple of modified UPS systems here with inverter capacitiesd of 1500 W each for when hydro decides to quit. Thgis is one reason for installint starlink, as the hydrop that ISPs depend omnn for theirmicrowave-cellular towers is not the same as the hydro we get mfoerm domestic consumption, soIP' can be out for days at a time following a bad storm, yet our domestic consumpion gris may ba working../ Another note re animals: While the starlink has a 100 W internal heater for whewn it is needed, if anomals, Cats especially, have access the can stop the starling by using the device as a nice warm bed! - a problem of yet another CAT-agory! So much for now, cheers, Bruce M.

Greetings Ruth. A little over two weeks ago SpaceX launched the last of the generation 1.5 Starlink satellites. Since then they’re launching generation 2.0 mini Starlink satellites. They’re supposed to be four times faster than the generation 1.5 satellites. Sometime later this year people should see a speed increase. Some people are thinking the speed increase will be about two times as it is now. Just have to wait and see. Take care in Scotland.

If you convert to a 12v install for your starlink. Also take a look at usb C that runs from 12v and can handle 57 watts. Then you can power your laptop from ti and leave your inverter totally off. And if you want to go extreme and want a secondary screen for your laptop, take a look at usb-c laptop monitors with power pass trough.

Hi Ruth, I have a 5G antenna fitted my van, with a 4G router only, It’s always been underwhelming for me tbh, most of the sales hype from the supplier was BS -particularly the original smarty sim which it was supplied with. But I have ran a Spanish roaming sim for coverage across Europe and UK. That worked well across the highlands and abroad but then was cancelled without much warning. Been watching the Starlink prices fall gradually, Very intriguing, It’s def the way to go if your a heavy user but my personal need has changed and I can manage with a payg sim now just for monitoring the van systems etc. 😊

It’s the data curtailment overseas which really gets me, I seem to go to the republic for work, within 2days perhaps 3 claims I’ve used 12-20GB…….

Before FTTP was available up my private road, I was relying on mobile 4G broadband using an EE SIM and my own router. ADSL speeds were barely 2Mb second apparently. I was never going to test that out for £20+ a month for "superfast broadband". 😂

I live in Finland and I have a 500/250mbs fixed fiber optic connection at home. However, I'm really interested in Starlink, and I've been thinking about getting it as a backup connection that would start working automatically if there was a problem with the fiber optic internet. The only reason I haven't bought Starlink yet is its price. But fortunately, I could suspend the subscription, and then activate the subscription when I need a Starlink connection. Hopefully the Starlink prices would go down in the future, at least I think so. When the number of customers at Starlink increases, I believe that they would be able to lower the prices. Starlink started operating in Finland at the beginning of this year.

For a fraction of the price I got a Verizon hotspot. I can use it when I’m driving,so I can listen to podcasts, there’s no need to set up an antenna, and the reception is great. Buying starlink is like buying a Tesla. A lot of money for very little.

I'm still really happy with it and it's still the best internet solution for my needs. Speeds aren't as fast as you'll find in houses with super fast wifi but it's still better than what I can get in my house. The power usage is a challenge. If I need to work, I tend to go to a campsite and use EHU so I don't need to worry about power usage.

Hi Ruth. SpaceX is able to fly satellites on its own, so the cost performance seems to be much better than before. If the antenna is installed outside, it can be used in rainy weather, but the battery consumption is larger than I expected, so I'm worried about using it on the move. If the antenna is leased, there is no risk of failure, and other basic questions have been solved, thank you.

Horsens, Denmark. I get around 120/8 on my phone and I get 70/50 on my broadband via antenna cable, wireless, although I pay for 500/50. But on my computer, I get around 500/50, as I pay for. The good thing about internet in Denmark, is that your speed must be guaranteed. So, if you pay for 500/50 as I do, the speed must remain that, no matter. And it usually does. But I'm tired of dropouts, so, I've ordered 500/500 fibre. Installation and connections cost is zero. Over 70% of the population here, can get fast broadband.
