I’m looking into getting a white 4th gen 20gb with all the fun mods like Rockbox, 512gb sd card, mega extended battery, and Bluetooth transmitter. chrome that gets cloudy and looses its shine can be prettied up by aluminum foil, of all things. Grab a small section of foil, hold it on your fingertips and slide back and forth. You don't need to apply much pressure, think of it more as friction doing the work. After a brief time you can see the shine come back. finish the whole affected area, then hit it with a metal polish that's safe for chome. work it in well, then finish with a polish from a microfiber cloth (or as the directions state). I've restored some motorcycle exhausts with this method and it works impressively well.

A few ideas. Dawn dish soap works well, magic clean eraser is amazing (great results almost 100% of the time, high grit sandpaper, store brand car polishing fluid, gently rubbing a file and if you used all of these ideas then finish it off with a microfiber cloth. I really recommend that you use all of these.

If you want a more consistent and brighter blue, I would suggest trying to first make the back as polished and clean as possible (any contaminants will muddy the blue, try distilled water). Then have a tray of fine, clean brass shavings and dig the case in the shavings so all edges are touching the brass. Apply the heat from underneath the tray slowly and evenly (moving the torch). Do not heat it up too fast, the farther away you are with the heat, the more control you have. Once it's at blue, you don't have to quench it, just take the back out of the heated tray of brass. hope this helps

I got a pretty nice looking finish on my back cover by removing the dock connector shroud and ribbon cables so it was just bare metal, and then scrubbing it with scotchbrite under running water. The way I would do it is keep it moving. Don't stop because that's when you get hot spots. Don't be scared to keep heating it up. Also try quenching in used motor oil rather than water. And there is a sort of cheat way to blue stuff. You can buy gun barrel bluing. Its a chemical you wipe on and let sit for however long the directions say. You can also find the same thing to brown metal. Just some ideas if you see this comment on such an old vidja. Love the content.

Been watching you a bunch recently, I dug out my box of 30 or so ipods (mostly 3rd gen) to finally get around to mod work again! Just finished a battery replacement & flash storage mod on a 4th gen u2 and it turned out great! I do acid etching for aluminum enclosures & copper PCBs pretty regularly & plan on doing some for an ipod or two pretty soon. (should look really cool on the anodized minis) The only thing I'm not sure I can pull off is getting the resist material consistently on curved edges. I would love to get the green patina that is on brass/copper (i have grown it on cymbals before) but I don't think aluminum or steel grow any interesting colors. (maybe electroplating first?)

Unfortunately this gets rid of the Apple logo or any other text or branding on there. But I’m sure you could achieve the same thing with some very fine grit sand paper for the deeper scratches, again followed by a polishing. Edit:Also it looked cloudy because you didn’t polish it! You want super fine scratches so the polish can go in and rub down those fine edges and scratches to be flush with the rest of the sheet of metal.

Hey, you can easily bring back the shine on back + dull down the jagged bits with progressivley less aggressive sanding, ending at around 3000 wet. Then hit it with automotive rubbing compound. Then a high quality polishing compound. Same for the front, but to a lesser extend. You'd at least be able to get the black off of it
