To me the most important thing is that if palt has a filling it is only salted pork. No onions, No smoked bacon, no spices. Just pork. And nobody fries palt whole as you apparantly can do with kroppkaka. Leftover palt is either reheated. Diced and fryed like pytt i panna, or sliced and eaten with butter like a small sandwitch.

You can buy them ready made in many stores. At least in Småland. Just boil. Serve with plenty of melted butter, lingonsylt and shredded carrot, apple, a few drops of lemon juice and raisins. Råkost. Possibly a cheese knäckebröd or two as well. I would have made them a little smaller. Perhaps 2/3 or even 1/2. If you eat too many too quick you may experience sudden onset narcolepsy or a semi comatose state. Also known as paltkoma.

As a part britt (Hull) but raised swedish here, I just wanted to say what many already have pointed out. This isnt "Palt". This is "Kroppkaka". But its common to be somewhat clueless on the subject. Even swedes thats not from the North part (and vice verse) do mistake them, and think they are the same thing, untill they taste it. They look the same in a glance, but have very different taste and consistancy. And in fact, "Palt" is realy diverse, and comes in many variations. Flat-balt, Grå-palt, Blod-palt, Pite-palt etc. FUN FACT: There is even a somewhat famous "Paltzeria" (a play on Palt and Pizzeria) in Piteå - Northern sweden. A restaurant/pizzeria that specialising in Palt. I prefere Palt before Kroppkaka. Charming channel. Keep it up. Cheers and welcome to Sweden. :)

As Thomas L just before me described. Palt and Kroppkakor are 2 quite different things. My old grandmas Palt recipe that I use calls for shredded raw potatio, barley and wheat flour, salt, an egg and thats about it. If you want "Flatpalt" (no pork inside) you just form balls and boil them till they float (in quite heavily salted water). When they float, they are done. In this case the pork (which should be real port, not bacon) are carefully browned to small slightly crisp pieces, that you have with the Palt together with som lingonberry (homemade, not the overly sugary sweet ones you usually find in stores, but real carefully sweetened jam that leave the all important tartness of the lingonberries to shine through. Add a small bit of normally salted butter on them to melt by the heat of the Palt and you're golden. Btw, the reason tv chefs never cry from chopping onions is that their knives are a lot sharper. It mean that the onion will no "tear" as much when chopped, hence less oils released = No crying. I live in Gothenburg. If you feel like me to show may grandmas recepie some day, give me a ring :)

About the onions and tears. Actually a swedish lowgrader schoolkid finally solved this problem a few years ago. It was shown on TV in some sort of competition and it is as brilliant as simple. Or light a couple of candles if you are going to chop a larger amount of yellow onions. The flames absorb the sharp onion smell and you do not have to shed tears. You can also have a match with the sulfur outward in your mouth.

As many before me has pointed out; they’re boiled not fried... But I forgive you. How should you know? It's self explanatory isn't it? Well, no it isn't. You'd only actually know that if you'd had it before. Reminds me of a friend of mine from Ethiopia who could not understand how we swedes could eat “blodpudding”, he thought the whole concept was disgusting not to mention how messy he found it to be. Asked why he thought so he explained that it took forever to cook and left his kitchen in a mess. The taste he explained left much to be desired. As I explained to him he is not expected to boil it but to slice it up and then fry it, it was as if something dawned upon him and he's had “blodpudding” many times since and actually likes it... By the way, be sure to visit the paltzeria in Öjebyn, Piteå, the only restaurant of it's kind in the world where real palt is served. And only palt. It's the one and only item on the menu in all its splendour 😋

Palt which is from Northern Sweden generally doesn't contain spices.. If you add the allspice and onion to your pork and making a dough out of boiled potatoes and wheat flour.. You technically are making Smålandic kroppkakor from southern Sweden. Not palt.. Ölandic kroppkakor.. Always has raw potato in the dough.. And Palt.. from the beginning was just boiled barley dough. Pork filled barley dough... Or blood and barley. (Blood palt) So from the beginning there was a larger difference between all the dumplings.. Now people from Norrland also add potatoes to their dough.. And they probably don't know that that wasn't there to begin with.
