YOUR CHINESE IS GOOD, Do they REALLY Mean that? Asian Culture 101: American Speaks Fluent Chinese

From the first time I ever said a Chinese word to a Chinese person in 2012 all the way through writing a 70 page graduation thesis in Chinese, people have had the same first reaction when I speak to them. When Chinese people say YOUR CHINESE IS GOOD, do they mean it? It is customary to deny compliments in China and Japan and always put yourself down while propping others up. A Chinese person will always tell you that you speak well even PERFECT no matter what. Remember Asian customs when interacting with Asian people and when watching my videos.

This is the same way with the Polish. Complaining is polite, otherwise it's considered bragging and is rude. Whenever I asked my Polish grandma if she was having a bad day she would always complain about something. I thought she was just always very unhappy but when I met other Polish decedents and immigrants I learned it's the polite thing to do.

I am a Chinese born in China. I have to say something. 1, when you say Thank you to a Chinese who complimented your Chinese, he/she won't be offended or think you're rude. It's a expected reply. We Chinese ourselves talk this way all the time nowadays. 2, when we say your Chinese is good, we mean it. I have watched several of your videos. Your Chinese IS good and I mean it, believe me. When we see a Westerner who speaks Chinese, we expect them to speak it with hard time on tones. But you managed them pretty well, not perfect, sure, but so well that we feel pretty comfortable. It's like hearing a Chinese who speaks Mandarin with a hint of his/her dialect. 3, I have a feeling that the Chinese culture your perceived is Chinese culture 50 years ago. Forgive my bluntness.

@@user-rf2pk1dw2i hongkist learn the characters in cantonese pronounciation, also using the traditional characters , so its totally different from mandarin but they are able to read and understand the characters where basically same meaning and grammar . They not able to speak mandarin but able to understand the characters in context

I've been watching a quite a lot of your videos over the past few years, but surprisingly I missed this one. Clearly done in the beginning of the "you know what" virus. Looking back, you are definitely the first "KZbinr" (I put it in quotes because I know you are a person first and happen to be on YT second) I've watched that made these kind of videos of "foreigner speaking the local language in another country". I learned a bit of japanese myself but never had the time and/or determination to go more serious, but eastern cultures always fascinated me. I really feel it's REALLY a SHAME that so many political barriers come up when you talk about China in particular, since the historical culture is so interesting. I wish that we didn't have that and instead had asian people interested in many a "western" language or culture, the same way many a "westerner" could be interested in "asian" culture and language - from ANY country. Thank you for all your work and videos over the years. In my life, to me, you truly made me feel that it's possible to have that exchange, surpassing all the political and practical problems, since at the end of the day: people are people and people enjoy interacting with one another. As I grew up in Hong Kong, we were always taught to be 謙虛 and that attitude remained even after I came to US around 8 years ago. People always either assume I'm not confident or fishing for more compliments, but when I receive compliments me my first thought is "okay what do you want from me?" Haha. I'm trying to be honest with people. KZbin language videos are too short and simple. They prove nothing. And I don't want adult learners to get discouraged seeing these KZbinrs speaking "perfect" (they are not perfect) Chinese and Japanese. If adult learners believe they need to be perfect, they will give up and that's not good.

I do love watching these videos though. They're very inspiring. 😂 albeit the KZbin algorithm likes to find me Chinese and Korean speaking American youtubers while I only understand Japanese. It's good that you clarified the East culture for your viewers. In your case, your Chinese is really good, no flattery. Every region has their own accent. A lot of native people can tell you are not from their region, but they won't know you are a foreigner to the country without looking at you.

Bingo! finally, someone talks about this! ^_^ Yes, it is, and this is the special thing which I believe not every country has the same culture as the culture in China, Taiwan, Korea, and all other Eastern Asia Countries, which have the same way to respond to complementary such as your Chinese or Japanese is good. After a long time, I am thinking why do they do such that way? I finally come to a conclusion, that we are foreigner, we don't speak like a native, I mean even though we are good at it, but there must be occurring some mistakes, there still are some flaws, that's why we response it by saying 哪裏？哪裏？ or 不會. Why do they say we speak very well? First of all, they feel happy when we talk in their language, I believe it happens also in a country like Mexico, when we speak Spanish they feel surprised about it. secondly, when they feel excited, they also want to give supports or encouraging us to keep study. so they always give us that good complimentary. 給我們加油！It's just my personal understanding and from my experience as well when I was in Taiwan studying Mandarin.

Love your channel. Back in 1971, I went to the University of Minnesota (USA). I met a Chinese girl in the student center and we started dating. Her parents had a Chinese restaurant and after class we would go there and come in the back door. Her parents didn't speak english, but her dad would wave a big knife at me as we walked through the kitchen along with yelling in Chinese at me. When I asked Joy what he was saying, she said you don't want to know. Joy would get in shouting matches with her mom over me. I got a lot of free food. Her siblings and cousins were Americanized and spoke english well, but the parents didn't. I should have married her, but was young and dumb. Maybe you should start up a "Learn Chinese for Beginners" class to support yourself.

That's the biggest problem with many polyglot channels. Viewers don't know the languages they are listening to. They have no way to judge except by the native speaker's reaction (they are often just being nice and giving face). I was shocked at the low level Japanese and Chinese self-proclaimed "polyglots" where speaking and getting millions of videos. Actually, it bothered me a lot.

@@OrientalPearl even then they could be lying and not actually think someone is good even if they say it! i also get bothered by channels like that as well, they seem to think languages are simply to show off how much they know to other people, but the people saying they are good, usually aren't meaning it. i understand wanting to get people excited about language learning with, "look how NATIVE speakers compliment me" but usually they can't read the room and are trying to sell something. it's also why i really appreciate your channel. you aren't acting like you are better than some of your viewers (who are learning) for not being on the same level of mandarin as you, and not pushing sites. it's just your personal experiences and thoughts, it makes it so entertaining to watch!

Yes, I think the "your Chinese is so good!" is a nice little courtesy not to be taken too seriously, but your Chinese is actually incredibly good. And the fact that you can read and write it is the key. So many gawilou's give up on the written language or never even try it, just contenting themselves with speaking. As such, we cut ourselves off from a rich source of new vocabulary which can elevate our speech, and we cut ourselves off from the shared experience that binds Chinese from all walks of life together - learning the script. I always believed that memorizing characters teaches so many things about the Chinese way of thinking - memorization, extreme attention to detail, and learning to detect similarities and patterns without them being explicitly told to you. I believe that in the Chinese learning style, you put all your effort into mastering the details and the generalities come intuitively. Or as they say in calligraphy, "copy the book, turn your back on the book". When a foreigner cops out of this, they essentially resign themselves to being illiterate and non-functional in their host society. Me, in other words.

Things that were Easy to conceptualize in English but difficult to express in Chinese! Or rephrasing sentences because you have to be more formal in a paper! Idk it’s all fascinating for sure

@@EagleEyedSheLion I like watching Ari (Xiaoma). He has almost two million subscribers, so you know he's raking in the bucks. He has a lot of white friends who also speak Chinese. Ari speaks some Cantonese and Fuzhounese. The YT er 口语老炮儿马思瑞Chris, gets told by a lot of Chinese he speaks Mandarin as well as a native speaker. Until the virus hit, he lived in China for the last eight years. He speaks five or six languages fluently. Like Ari, he gets told a lot he has an Beijing accent.

DannyH yea Chris definitely has the best Mandarin for sure. I was actually thinking of making an channel like anming’s if my study abroad doesn’t fall through for next year in Taiwan. I have studied abroad a lot in China and have fairly proficient mandarin (maybe in between xiaoma and Anming, since Anming has thesis level chinese but I think my pronunciation is better than Xiaoma). It wouldn’t be on this account but I have been heavily considering it! I like the less click bait style and culturally aware that Anming does even though I know she has less subscribers :)

Very educational video whose significance might be underestimated by hasty viewers who focus only on one side namely the entertaining side of interactions. One need to pay attention to cultural side that you highlighted so as to get rid of many misconceptions that people have with regards to culture being embodied in the language. I think majority of people (even when they speak foreign languages) try to apply their culture (of what is rude and what is not; how to compliment and how not, and how to respond and how not etc) to foreign language speakers. This leads to many misunderstandings and hence people start forming misconceptions about other cultures by projecting their own. You have demonstrated this point vividly in this video. It cannot be better than that. As for one's mastery of language, I totally agree with you that it is not only about speaking fluently in casual conversation (e.g. one need only a thousand words to speak English in daily life and even natives of English need no more than 6000 words in all areas of their life) but it is about one's ability to understand academic vocabulary that might be used in interdisciplinary fields and being able to write in that language. Writing is another whole skill on its own that is different from speaking. For you to be able to write a thesis means you master the language on another level (formality of words and expression, coherence, style, moving smoothly from idea to another, employment of academic jargon with respect to your field, and so many other elements). Hence, I know where you are coming from. I think many people overlook the fact that writing is also a skill tested in language tests (in addition to the other three).

In between, you have many kinds.... Do not let that discourage you because there are always people who would benefit from what you are sharing. It is also a fact one can no longer even hint at KZbinrs' behavior because their fans would lead a huge attacks...This shows that many people do not use their rationality to assess what has been said or demonstrated but they attach themselves emotionally and do not accept that their KZbinrs might be wrong. But nonetheless, I think your method can educate many people who are ready to see your points. Your channel is still growing, and if the sync does not happen now, there is still the future opportunities. I really like japanesepod101. I had a premier membership there for a couple of years. Nowhere near being fluent, yet, haven't been consistent enough. Want to switch over to Spanish, though, seems a bit more useful here in Los Angeles.

@@OrientalPearl looking forward to it. My best advice is to set aside a regular time during the day where you can study. I had downloaded lots of the JPod101 lessons and I would listen to them on my commute to and from work. About a year and a half ago, my company decided to close our office and have everyone work from home, so I lost that regular study time. When listening to the lessons, be sure to repeat the sentences after the teacher says them. I liked how they would repeat the dialog at normal speed, then slow speed. The newer lessons are the best. For some reason, hearing the Japanese of the company's founder, Peter Galante, on some of the older lessons was irritating. He sounds like a very nice and knowledgeable guy, it's just that his accent seems so strong. For those who sign up, there's a way to change the email settings on your account so you're not bombarded by daily emails asking you to upgrade. If you do want to upgrade, wait for the specials. The best ones come around holidays. I think the best discount I got was around 40%, but that shows up rarely. I wonder why the Chinese site is called ChineseClass101 and not ChinesePod101, like all of the other languages that they offer...
