@joaomachado23132 жыл бұрын
Ah yes because when you travel to other countries you usually see the whole country. I mean I'm sure everyone would have time to head north after Lisbon to see Leiria , Coimbra, Santarém, Porto, Serra da Estrela, etc.. And after that why not go to Alentejo and then Algarve. And since you're at it go to Madeira and Açores........ When one travels, he/she doesn't have unlimited time. It's obvious people most of the times are only going to the most important and famous places, historically and culturally.
@brunoalves-pg9eo2 жыл бұрын
@@joaomachado2313 Did I say you have to visit the whole country? I'm just saying that Lisbon is not by any stretch the best place to visit. If you want history and culture Porto is a much better place, the city is older, has more history, better food, culture is better preserved and is not as expensive. Algarve is for people who like the beach, Gerês and Serra da Estrela for those who like hiking trails in the mountains. And the Islands are just a must visit for anyone who likes nature. Yes, Lisbon is the most popular because it's the capital, but that doesn't mean it's the best place to visit. Ofc this is all subjective and it all depends on what you look for when you visit a country. But in my opinion, there are much better places, just like in France Paris isnt the best destination in France or Madrid in Spain.

There are so many cities and sites to see, from Guimarães, Chaves, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisbon, Almendres, Tomar, Óbidos, Évora, Montemor, ... and these are only the ones with historical significance. You can visit a lot of other places for the natural landscape, such as the Douro Valley, the Gerês Natural Parque, the Montezinho Natural Park, the Nazaré and their coastal town with the largest waves have been surfed, ... Then there's Madeira and the Azores, which are mainly 'floating' gardens and nature reserves, and an absolute must. Very nice to see that you liked our country! If you ever think about returning, then next time, come to Porto! It may be a bit smaller, but it's the unofficial second capital of Portugal! Great people, great history, and of course the francesinhas are great! Or Covilhã, the Serra da Estrela usually has snow in the colder seasons, and the cheese from there is definitely the best. Or Algarve, fantastic beaches and usually great weather too, though it can get really hot down there, like 50° or so! Leiria, Batalha, Guimarães, Viseu has nothing, Castelo Branco... I guess Fátima is also decent enough, but for the Sanctuary alone. Just don't fall into the tourist traps, we have too many a those here

As a Portuguese myself I think you nailed the video: very informative and engaging! I must point out though, the title is a bit misleading 😅 and over here we kinda bicker with each other, because to outsiders Portugal is ONLY Lisbon, and that’s so far from the true (as you point out in the video as well). You know, not something you have to be sensitive about, but just some FYI 😅 And while Lisbon IS a beautiful city, if you do come back to Portugal I do recommend checking other places, like Porto, Aveiro, Faro/Portimão, and the Madeira/Azores islands!

FYI, the unemployment rate in Portugal is 5.9%, not 43.6% as you're trying to imply at minute 8:02 ("Portugal has one of the lowest employment rates on the continent, with only 56.1 percent of the population employed) [?!!!!] Secondly, Saint Anthony wasn't baptized in the Lisbon Cathedral (minute 9:02) but in the church across the road, which was named after him. Also this: "Originally introduced by the Arab invaders in the thirteenth century, [...]" (minute 14:10) This is completely incorrect. Portugal exists as an independent nation since the mid-twelfth century, by which time the Moors (whom many of you continue to mistake for Arabs) had been expelled from the territory that was to become Portugal (with the exception of the Algarve which was only freed of their rule in the mid-thirteenth century). In Portugal, the manufacture of decorative tiles only started in the 1500s after the return of King Dom Manuel I, who had been to Seville on a visit to his in-laws, King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabel of Castille, and became fascinated by the tiles that he saw in that city that still retained many of the buildings the Moors left behind. However, tiles only started to be manufactured in large quantities in Portugal from the 1600s onward! And also, contrary to what you've mentioned at minute 15:00, there is no implicit "love for canned fish" Canned fish is only, by and large, eaten as a snack, not as a part of the main meal. Portuguese gastronomy is hugely varied (Pork, Sausages, Lamb, Veal, chicken, shellfish, a great variety of fish, bread, cakes, desserts, fruit, vegetables, etc. Only an extremely ill-informed person would think that the Portuguese only eat sardines on bread all year round.

Most of the info here is great, the only aside is that D. Sebastião was never burries in Portugal, he is basically the Portuguese version of the legend that King Arthur will return at Englands time of need, except he was a real king that became king too soon and decided to sail to affrica to fight a war he had no buisness fighting and nobody knows what happened to him, causing Portugal to be left without a king or heir and be taken over by Spain for like 100 years. There is a memorial toumb though, which is what's actually in that church.

As a Portuguese, thank you for the eurobeat at the start as we drifted our way to India. Lisbon was very well shown and detailed, fantastic work! Our country is very rich in culture and every region has it's own traditions however, so please come back one day and check out the more rural areas too! Viriathus and his guerrilla war against the Romans plus our celtic traditions are worth talking about as we still use homemade bagpipes to this day (the pauliteiros of Miranda), amongst many, many other interesting facts and quirks! I like to say that we can see the whole world from here. Once again, thank you for visiting and I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay! :D

Meu, tens a História toda baralhada!
