I do think that having more of a full sleeve might raise more questions, especially in the countryside - in comparison the a variety of tattoos scattered around ones body. As the sleeves can remind people of the Yakuza more, and since random tattoos are becoming more normalised by the younger generation. That being said, I and friends of mine with full sleeves have never had a problem (speaking from personal experience) from having full or half sleeves of tattoos :)

@idislikemints3 жыл бұрын
It might also be that they don't concerne themselves with foreigners that much and also the fact that being Japanese and having entire parts of the body tattooed might raise a lot more questions/worries since the possibility of them being yakuza is a lot higher than a random person from Europe or another part of the world.
@destituteanddecadent91063 жыл бұрын
@@idislikemints So true. If you're white or black or any non Asian race basically, people don't care because chances are you aren't even Japanese, let alone Yakuza. Gyms and water parks are a different story, because big chains can't risk being associated with any gangs, so they try to maneuver around it by having blanket rules concerning tats (and obviously, each individual employee doesn't have a say in whether people "look" Yakuza or not).
@cats147793 жыл бұрын
My boyfriend is quite heavily tattooed (lots on his arms, so quite hard to hide) and my thighs and stomach are tattooed. We went to the expected tourist spots when visiting Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and we didn’t really find that people cared much. Old folks stared, but that’s no different to what we experience at home in Australia. It’s cool to see that tattoos are starting to lose their stigma in Japan -Japanese traditional is highly regarded and strongly referenced globally, and it’s no coincidence that a lot of history’s most iconic tattoo artists - Sailor Jerry, Ed Hardy, Ben Corday - are influenced by Japanese tattooing. It’s timeless.

I would love to hear more about the real life in japan. Imagine a person who is not an influencer living in japan. Is it true that you are not allowed to leave work befor your boss does? Or that no one use the vacation bc they are scared to lose the job? I love visiting japan but i can't imagine living there forever. Finding real friends must be hard too
@Scopatone3 жыл бұрын
Leaving work before your boss is entirely dependent on your company. Many companies expect you to stay until the boss is done but its not always a requirement, but it does make you look bad to leave before them and could have social/professional implications in the workplace. Same for taking vacation. Few people use their vacation days just because it makes them bad when nobody else does it and can affect professional relationships. Most of these rules are unspoken and breaking them won't get you yelled at or fired, but they will affect how people view you as a worker and could possibly have professional consequences when it comes time to evaluate you for raises, promotions, or just general invitations. Some bosses may give foreigners a pass just for being foreign, but its no guarantee. And yes, making friends in large cities is hard because people just focus on work. Its easier in smaller places and Osaka has a reputation for being friendlier. Nobody in Tokyo gives af about you lol
@zedamex3 жыл бұрын
I've heard of the boss waiting for employee waiting for boss situation but everyone I know seems to get out 0-40min after their scheduled end time (usually busy and hasn't finished everything). Taking Holidays is a burden on the others, many can but usually only a couple of extra days.(not none), I've seen some cases of people who can't take holidays unless its a wedding or funeral. Because "no one else is available to do your job". They often have their holidays owing converted to extra pay. At least thats my experience.

Also for the record, I don't have tattoos nor do I want one, I'm just a smart businessman .
@anjellalo9723 жыл бұрын
@@Waifu4Life I didn't say it was right or good, I was just saying what the thought process probably is for businesses like onsens and gyms. If a law were placed against discrimination of customers based on tattoos, then people who are afraid of tattoos would have to deal with it or not go and business wouldn't be hurt that bad. If we're talking about a random gym changes their rules, and they get a couple people with tattoos join, then maybe they could loose business from customers that will leave to join a "no tattoos" gym and also could deter possible customers who visit and see "scary" people. I don't have tattoos either, but I'd love to some day! I wanna get matching ones with my family. Anyways, the whole tattoo thing being not allowed in japan will probably fizzle out over time as sentimental tattoos become more common there. Eventually, gyms might have less customers by having the no tattoos rule, from a business standpoint they will then all change and remove the rule.

From a Japanese perspective, normal tattoos and Wabori(和彫り) have a very different representation. Normal tattoos are just "western" and it's never intimidating, but having a Wabori on you basically means you somewhat belong to the underground society, simply because no one other than yakuza wears Wabori tattoos. Those guys wearing Wabori tattoos at the festival are also all yakuza, belonging to the Takahashi-gumi, and have caused a few strifes with their rival group during the festival. It's not just fashion. I personally wouldn't give a shit if a foreign guy had a tattoo at the onsen, but would probably avoid him if I saw a Japanese-looking guy with a Wabori, and I'm pretty sure that how an average Japanese would react. Thinking Japan having a "close-minded" stigma without even considering to know how the society is, in my opinion, just as close-minded as gyms or onsen places in Japan prohibiting every single person with tattoos without even considering foreign customers.

I visited Japan in 2018, I'm heavily tattooed and was "warned" about how people might have a negative reaction to me while I was there. It's totally over exaggerated, in terms of how foreigners will be treated. I only recieved positive comments from people there and as a tourist in a different country, you're going to get looked at anyway. I also had a tattoo done during my trip at a studio in Tokyo and it was a really cool experience! The studio was super out of the way and discreet, vastly different to what I'm used to in the UK. It's honestly such great news knowing artitists over there can finally work legally without the medical license!

I’m really happy to watch this video. I have tattoos and always wanted to go to Japan, but I was scared that I wouldn’t be able too. So I am glad that they aren’t as strict as they used to be. Hopefully in the future I will be able to visit.

I get stares and I’m not even in Asia. Like in America I get stares from my hair colors over the years but mostly of other Asians I get them from than anyone else. Most of them are middle aged but they don’t really say nothing just stare. I do get some stares from children but in a good way, like it makes them happy and smile (which makes me happy and smile too). I’ve met elderly that compliment me my hair colors before (they are so sweet) and actually they don’t stare just walk up to tell me they like my hair. Luckily I’m not in an Asian country yet or my anxiety would make me so nervous from the stares.

I would be interested to see the difference if an Asian man (non Japanese) does the same challenge. I think being a woman makes you less of an assumed threat.

I'm pretty heavily tattooed and have traveled to Japan- Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto. I didn't try to go to any onsen or pools, but it didn't really encounter any issues. I did have some men at shared restaurant table start having a conversation about my tattoos, but not in a threatening way or anything. Also older people and kids staring at me I am also a tall white female with numerous facial piercings, so clearly a foreigner and with lots of things to take in. People stare at me in my home country sometimes too!
