Valve has been very up front about the fact that they aren't going to be constantly upgrading and iterating every year, and they've made their reasons for that pretty clear. Feels like a bit of a strange take to be disappointed in them for being true to their word. Besides it's not like they advertised the white version as anything other than a cosmetic change.

@@baldlyrudy But the Steam Deck is not just a part, its a full system. No normal person swap their gpu or cpu every year. You wait until you get a good enough leep in performance and so far AMD has not done that when It comes to a Steam Deck 2. And splitting the system as you want makes it harder for devs to work with it and thus lowers the quality worse for its users. In generell we take progress for granted. Was not long ago it took a decade between consol generations. And money wise is it not better to get as much value as possible for your steam deck instead of feeling the need to swap to the next best thing?

Also, incremental updates are designed to drain your wallet, color variants are designed for collectors, or people who greatly value aesthetics. "This is designed to empty your wallet because they didn't give you a handful of little updates to convince you to buy it" is a WILD take...

Agree, it’b be strange for Steam to touch on spec at this moment honestly, they just did it recently with the Oled. It’s a new color and it looks amazing, wouldn’t have expected anything else, unless they have marketed it

Saying "what we have had for years" feels very nitpicky. The OLED was released a year ago. For someone like me, who has had the deck since launch and is still rocking an LCD model with worse wifi, battery, charging, screen ect. this IS an upgrade. You expecting " a little bit more" is just foolish. Were you also expecting more with the first limited drop? Why would valve release a "limited" edition product that's better as a system than the regular version? How would a customer feel if they just bought a deck and a better deck comes out for 50 bucks more for a limited time? Low effort nitpicks in my opinion.

Hold up. The first "Limited" drop came out a year ago and launched alongside the original OLED line. This is one straight up out of the blue. Despite Valve saying that they had no improvements planned doesn't mean that I wanted nothing more than a color swap a year after the original launched. This is a handheld PC, not a Nintendo Switch.

@@antoan630 The revision was definitely an improvement in efficiency and not performance. When I say "so long", I mean almost three years. Computer hardware is refreshed annually, which isn't what I'm asking for. The Steam Deck LCD released in February 2022. The performance that we've seen has been the same since launch, which is, as I said, almost three years. Is it too much to ask for an improvement in performance (not efficiency), even if by the slightest?

I think you're missing the point here. Valve has been very upfront about not upgrading the Steam Deck until there is a massive bump in performance without sacrificing battery life. They also said they don't think it's fair to the consumer to release new hardware every 1-2 years. I do understand that the Steam Deck is underpowered compared to other PC handhelds, and of course I would love to see a Steam Deck 2 at some point - but this was not that. This was also not a refresh, the Steam Deck OLED was the refresh. This is just a limited quantity color option, nothing more. Were you dissapointed in Microsoft for releasing the Xbox Series S in black without upgrading the specs on it? I heavily disagree with your take here.

So first point would be valve did exactly what they promised. They promised the same device but in white. Because they didnt overdeliver like the OLED making other improvements in adition to a color change is fair. The title of your video calling it a cash grab is not because they provided exactly the product promised. A cash grab would be the ROG Ally the original product was extremely flawed the overheating SD cards should have been noted in testing or it was and they didnt fix it. Then less then a year later they fix it bump the price and do nothing for current owners. How could i trust that there is no known flaw in this product. If they did what you are proposing then it would be promoting a company releasing sub par products so they could "improve" it every six months to a year.

I can understand a RAM upgrade could have been cool but it is possible to do as a DIY project. 16 GB is a fair amount of RAM and helps keep the price competitive. Like others have said this is just a special edition and valve has been quite clear that there are no other differences other than the colorway. The Steam Deck OLED release was the first upgrade we've had and there won't be another one for awhile.

Coming from someone who didn't own a prior steam deck and is finally dipping into it for the first time purely because of this white color, I would consider debuting an incremental hardware improvement in a limited edition model very anti-consumer. While it might be nice for people who intend on buying it anyway, for their existing consumer it exploits FOMO and locks this arbitrary upgrade behind a device worth $680+tax.

Valve has already said dozens of times that they are not upgrading the tech of the steam deck until technology has improved enough to justify a total hardware upgrade. They were always upfront about this whether it would be on blogs KZbin channels, or their very own website

Valve isn't a hardware company like other competitors like ASUS or boutique companies like ayaneo and their history of developing products or games just takes a long while to the detriment of the waiting consumers "cough" deckard "cough". While it would be nice to get more changes, such stability helps build consumer confidence and developers to support the device as a baseline of how games should be played for low mid spec pcs/handhelds.

It won't get dirty. None of my white controllers are dirty because I wipe them down with 70% iso wipes once or twice a month and I don't eat food while using them. Clean your hands. Don't leave it sitting in the dirt.

For me, yeah. But that's because I have other Steam Decks that are all black. If this is the only one you have, it probably won't bother you at all. The handheld still looks clean and I like the aesthetics.

@@baldlyrudy Yeah I got mine but stopped using it since i realized that in racing games the stick auto goes left for some reason. Gyro was disabled and still the same issue. Got both the ally x and the white steam deck.

Have had the money for a couple of months, was waiting to see if there was a sale on OLED. Then this LE came out and I wanted to jump at it, but... Didn't... Doesn't help that it has NOT sold out yet... Guess a lot of ppl are thinking the same. Still doubting if just to get it or get the "normal" Black OLED instead... Also doesn't help that they slashed the LCD one 25% this week, and you can pretty much get TWO 512GB LCD ones for what the OLED costs...

It seems like it does. Aside from the white keyboard and boot up animation, everything else is similar to the other Steam Deck profiles. You'll get that neon blue and pink hue around your profile border.

The more they change up the hardware specs the less support it'll get from devs. Look at how devs have been talking about the Ally for example they don't trust that it will be supported long term so why put in that extra effort where as valve has shown they are dedicated to long term support and that's why we see steam deck setting baked into some games.

@baldlyrudy my version of good quality and my standards of having fun havnt evolved really since 2014 im just looking for 1080p and small without the issue it has now with poor battery life. i want the best version or a version where i cant really see them improving on anymore or that would make me go "i want that" i dont want to buy every generation because although gaming is still improving its not peaked yet especially pertable gaming. i think consol and pc has peaked for me which is why i stuck with the ps4 and xbox s. the jump from s -x isnt big enough to justify the $400 it costs and neither is the steam deck....yet im still rocking the psvita 2000 lol

i like the steam deck but its just really underpowered. I have a steam deck, ally, ally x and legion go and I use them over my steam deck because they can just play more. My Steam deck really struggles with modern AAA. I also have a custom backplate on my Steam Deck and was able to drop my temps by alot and has improved performance but its still behind other devices

My man they roasting you in the comments. I will say the quality of this video is very good. I do agree with you a little extra spec bump like ram or ssd could have help sell this. Now I’m not up to date w valve on what they are promising it is a good product just a bit pricey for me. I did try the legion go and it did get me interested in handhelds. I use the abxy s9 with a tablet and use moonlight to stream my games. For me that works great and it’s still cheaper than buying a hand held although my pc set up was a couple thousand two years ago. Regardless I did enjoy the video

It ain’t draining my pocket book unless it gets more junk in the trunk… ei, more processing power. I’ve come to the conclusion that cloud streaming might just be the best application of a steam deck in this day & age. Yeah it can still play most games natively but other handhelds just play those same games better. Way better. But that doesn’t much matter if you cloud steam. lool. You can play the newest games on ultra settings in the cloud even if the system you are using to stream has the specs of a potato.

Yes and "people die when they are killed" 😅 It was very obvious this is nothing more then a way to get more money for Gabens retirement fund. Also i have to respect the fact that they are sticking to their word and don't upgrade it every year which is a great thing for developers and one of the reasons they like it so much compared to rest. And i cant say this: in this case you're the architect of your own disappointment, P.s. Deck looks great in any color under the condition that color is black 😂 Giveaway isn't a bad idea but you would need to be sure person who it goes to will use it and not going to sell it for much higher price
