I think it's easy to end up obsessing just about 'the looks' from models on the covers of magazines, social media and on IG. While they might 'look healthy' they are in fact, not. This was a turning point for me. But you need to deal with your health now, while you can. Rather than saving it for later, when it will turn your life into hardmode.

I think it depends Josh, i do a lot of sports and i look pretty similar to a lot of IG peeps, but i don't diet or anything i just eat whatever i need to eat. A few addendums from my 8 years of struggling with body shape and weight: -Salt won't make you retain water unless you increase it a lot. In fact, if you suddenly reduce or stop salt intake you will bloat like heck, because you're body will panic and try to hold onto it. Salt is super healthy, both for weight loss and not feeling terrible(both physically and mentally). The problem with salt is, most comercially available salt is pretty bad. When you intake salt, you should try to balance it with Potassium. You want to have at least a 1:1 Sodium to Potassium ratio. More Potassium is better. Either get a salt replacement that has both sodium and potassium or get potassium from leafy greens, although it's gonna be difficult, you need about 4.700 mg of Potassium per day. Also you can't supplement it with pills. Wheat grass juice might help. -Abs are mostly a body fat thing. No matter how hard you train, abs are about dropping body weight. Intermitent fasting + prolonged fasts every now and again + refeeding with HEALTHY SMALL CONTROLLED meals will get you there and make you feel great. Starvation works too for a short amount of time but wrecks your body in the long term, just learn how to fast. Diet pills are meh and stop working after a few runs, if you want a good diet pill, just do coffee, tea or caffeine extract. If going for very prolonged fasts 72+ hrs or doing starvation, take 3 g HMB per day to preserve muscles(not to look good, but so you don't atrophy and feel terrible or worse, weaken your heart). -Spot reduction is doable, but very difficult. Upper body HIIT + working out in a fasted state + rolling your muscles to free up lymphatic tissue + ultraviolet radiation therapy + cold therapy(working out in the cold with exposed skin and swimming in cold water over a few weeks will show results in targeted area, EVEN the lower abs, BUT it's so incredibly difficult, and you're just fighting your body's natural fat distribution(duh, it's trying to protect your core organs). Just reduce your over-all body fat and you'll be a much happier camper. Good luck to all of you!
@Veo873 жыл бұрын
Getting the abs is the hardest part for me because I don't want to feel miserably hungry. Restriction is going to be required, of course, but I'm wondering if it's possible to do without being so restrictive that I'm distractingly uncomfortable most of the day.

Your focus in the gym should be anything BESIDES looks. Looks are subjective. Looks depend on lighting, time of day, and so many other things. You can never judge your own looks accurately. Your cholesterol levels are objective. Your 10k time is objective. Your max deadlift is objective. Chase tangible achievements; there is nothing more satisfying than achieving a fitness goal that 2 years ago you thought would be a dream. The looks will follow.

The looks do not follow, that is naive to say. People face different obstacles, some have to force feed and some have to closely monitor their diet to achieve their desired look. Unless you are lucky, be prepared to count calories for the rest of your life. Edit: By lucky I am referring to people who have an appetite that gives them exactly their ideal body.
@Rumil_5 жыл бұрын
Pretty bold statement, I agree to a degree. The number on a scale is also objective, but i dont think people should be chasing only that. Progress photos are helpful (although subjective to a point) especially for situations where weight is staying the same, but you're body is recomping and you're actually looking and feeling better despite the numbers. Theres ton of objectivity that I do think should be followed within fitness, but without some subjectivity you might as well be a robot.

We're about the same height (6'4"), and I've had similar experience with my weight. I graduated HS at about 165lbs (I was a twig), went through basic training, came out at 180lbs, then over the years ballooned up to 240. Looked at myself in the mirror when I was about 25 and realized how big I'd gotten, so I went through the old P90x videos a few times (this was in the mid 2000s) and dropped back down to 180. Then I got married and went back up to 230-40, then jumped back on the fitness train again when I was about 30 and maintained a weight of 200lbs for a couple years. I'm currently in another "heavy" phase and trying to get my bf% back down. It's hard. Sorry for the life story but I guess I just wanted to show you how you're not alone in having gone back and forth with it.

I hear you man. The first time I lost a ton of weight I became obsessive about the number and weight on the scale, calorie counting etc. I gained some of it back during the pandemic and just trying to work on building healthier habits for myself without becoming obsessive like I did before. Part of that is trying to cook more consistently and change up recipes, exercising consistently (even if I don't get to the gym making sure I do something at home), and reducing food intake. I did a lot of overeating and dining out, especially on sweets and that's the habit I'm trying to break now. It definitely became a coping mechanism for a while but trying to adapt healthier coping mechanisms and let go of the unhealthy ones. It's a process. I think patience is always key and remember that you're building habits for a healthier life. And life is ongoing. It doesn't start or stop when you are at a certain weight.

I will always follow these videos with interest & cheer you on, but I also get inspired by some of the stories (I related a lot with your LDR initiated marriage for instance). In my case, your mix of your personal life stories with the other content of your channel IS the definitive factor that contributed to me subscribing & keeping an eye on the material you're posting almost daily & I'm sure I'm not the only one. In regards to this video, my family was ALSO not big on health & fitness. They're still not & will probably never be - on top of that I have flashbacks of them mocking me when I was doing push-ups in the living room, because my room was too small... They have cared a lot about what they eat though, which helped become more fond of home-cooking & sort of normalizing it inside my head. I also have always completely related to your excess gaming periods in childhood - and then regretting these time-wasters in later adulthood... You could even make a video all about this & elaborate it more, I would totally watch that, together with a recommendation & shout-out to kids of why they should stop ASAP. I respect & admire your determination & ambition to be fit right after your divorce. Many men that I've known across my life have just gotten matters worse & ruined their health even worse. Respect. You've gotten very far since these bad moments in your life & I look forward to see how the rest of your life unfolds & how you progress and help others progress.

I used to believe the same. But once you start doing it, it's about being able to commit, and reaching your goals, and pushing yourself, and seeing your body grow and change. Lifting weights seems boring, but you get such a dopamine rush it becomes wonderful. You just have to try it.
@Sn1per9CZE4 жыл бұрын
@@mrknarf4438 I do not get a dopamine rush from weight lifting or running, or the sports people usually do. I get somewhat of a minuscule dopamine rush when I finally climb a hard boulder, but that's about it. Some people just do not get the dopamine rush that much, so the simpler activities (weight lifting, running, ...) get really boring.

I started lifting a year ago. Tried to do fitness four times and I quit after a month. This time, I'm actually enjoying the struggle. Might be because I'm 35 now and I can appreciate long-term gains more than before. There's nothing wrong by wanting to be admired by women, it's a legitimate desire. The best part is that if you made something of yourself by the time you're 30, they will start coming to you. To every 28-year-old out there: once you hit 30, it's not the end of your life. It's barely begun.

Not as accurate with women lol. Men age like fine wine... Women not so much. Becuz womens beauty is heavily based on youth, winkles usually aint sexy (unless u got a kink for old women lol). After 35 the wrinkles get way more obvious. I am nottt lookin forward to it but i guess im gonna have to embrace the future me when time comes.
@danke11504 жыл бұрын
@@VioletIsBulletproof Men age like wine and women age like milk. This is why it's been standard that young women would marry older guys, because they are both in their smv prime. Chances are if a woman isn't married by the time she's 30, she won't be getting married, and her chances of conceiving a child are way down. This isn't the case for men, thankfully.
@VioletIsBulletproof4 жыл бұрын
@@danke1150 what isnt the case? There is already scientific studies that show men shooting more blanks/have less sperm and r therefore less likely to get a woman pregnant after 35. Nature doesnt just work against one gender lmaoo. But honestly ive seen plenty unattractive guys at 33...and it only goes downhill from there. But not sure if its genetics or they got worse with age. Ive def gotten more attractive between 24-27 ..before that i only got less attractive lmao. Its weird. Maybe its the fashion sense and hairstyles. Shrug. But yeah not lookin forward to when i hit 30s.
@danke11504 жыл бұрын
@@VioletIsBulletproof Male attractiveness isn't purely aesthetic, Women are attracted to wealth, someone capable of providing. You may think you're more attractive now, but we know for a fact that men prefer younger women, women are not more attractive at 30 than they were at 25, and they are not more attractive at 25 than they were at 18. A Womans fertility is already in decline by the age of 25 and it's a miracle if she's able to conceive by the time she's 40, a man on the other hand is still able to impregnate a woman at 80. We know once women hit the wall, if they have not had a child, their desire for one spikes, and because of they're age, they will find it difficult to grab a males attention, and even if they could, they're unlikely to be able to conceive. A womans ability to attract a man, get married, and have a child are practically none by the time she's 40. This isn't a case for men, men gain more social status as they age, which women find attractive.
