Yeah..., about 'Twitches'... I mean, the movie was okay, but after a rewatch years later, god was the writing horrendous! The only good that came out of it were The Mowry sisters and "Rush" by Aly & AJ. Basically, 'Twitches' felt like 'Sister, Sister' as a 'Charmed'-esque movie.

Yes! Everything you said @14:00. This is really a problem in YA where the only black books that get popular are the ones that center racism and the black struggle. Anything besides that, seems to get paid dust.

@@harvest44492 Briarcliff Prep is about a girl starting her freshmen year at a prestigious black boarding school. The sequel comes out in the fall. It’s your typical boarding school drama while discussing the dangers of teen dating violence. There are so many conflicts that aren’t racism; the novels I’m working on are filled with them.

@@harvest44492 I'll reverse this and offer another perspective; are there a lot of / do white stories, of which there are an innumerable amount, focus on how they colonized and ruined civilizations? Do white stories struggle to write stories where racism or their (collective/historical) impact on society are the central focus and arbiter of the story? Or is it that white stories can just exist and be their own thing without having to consider or address the implications that their ethnic perspectives create? There is no problem with utilizing realism and history to enhance a narrative, but the idea implicitly perpetuated by the disparity in reception to black pain vs black joy / content / neutrality is that that is the box black people are 'appropriate' for and that alternatives are 'illogical'.
@Renteka-Bond
@Renteka-Bond 9 ай бұрын
@@harvest44492 That isn't what I said, for one. But also, Avatar is also explicitly about a hot white dude showing up, learning and mastering the culture and then being the hero against the bad colonizers. My point was that it's odd that you can't conceive as easily a story about black / ethnic people just existing because of history but white people can just swim around in mediocrity and unbotheredness to their heart's content .

I definitely understand the feeling of not liking what's popular and wondering if you're the one who's wrong. I experience it a lot in the anime community (part of why i tend to avoid fandoms now). There's also this weird disconnect people tend to get where they think if they dislike something that is HAS to be completely utterly trash with no redeeming qualities, instead of acknowledging that something can objectively be well made but not vibe with you. It's something I have to examine myself when I criticize media I find genuinely offensive or poorly made. I try to make sure that I'm not letting my general dislike color how I'm seeing the parts that I think aren't well made. It doesn't help that really hardcore fans like to ignore valid criticism with "well you just don't like it so your opinion doesn't count". People in general need to learn to take a step back and separate enjoyment from quality.

And honestly... this is how I felt about Chainsawman. There's nothing majorly critical that I can say about the anime, it's just that while watching, I didn't personally feel invested in the story or the characters. Like, I just didn't feel an emotional connection to the anime whatsoever and I've been doubting myself about it. Seeing so many people enjoy the anime, yet I didn't that much, made me question myself. (And honestly this is usually the case) Edit: Now a story by Tatsuki Fujimoto that I'd prefer to watch as an anime and feel more invested in is definitely 'Fire Punch'

I loathed twitches because I was one of the few who read the books and the female characters were done dirty by that adaptation. They were all dumbed down. Book Alex was a character dealing with the grief of her foster mom slowly dying of cancer and the awkwardness of being a poor foster kid thrust into an upper-class neighborhood. Cam's foster mom comes to terms with Cam & Alex having different personalities. Illeana is arrogant and powerful and a freaking badass. Well, Cam is pretty much the same Cam but gets told off more for being selfish and has to come to terms with being adopted. Also she gets tempted by the dark side more then alex in later books. Thanatos mentors her at one point and encourages her worst impulses. Also, Karsh acted as a therapist for the girls dealing with their personal issues. Even Cam's popular girl possi has more depth than they're given. I'm not gonna pretend the books were perfect they jumped the sharklater on but the first three or four were pretty solid. Also, the Dcom choice to make Karsh x Illeana a thing! Iknow they changed the personalities but that was his adopted daughter in the books why???? I loved Tia and Tamora but they deserved a way better story that respected the characters more.

45:09 No literally same. Like, I get so frustrated, but for me the reason is mainly being unsettled with not understanding things. Like, it's a thing where you see a majority enjoying something and because of that you want to join in on this something, you join on it, but then end up disliking the thing that everyone was so hyped up about. You then become confused on WHY you don't fall into the majority and even feel guilty for not being part of the majority (Since we homo sapiens love collectiveness). It's the whole thing of not understanding why you don't fall into the majority opinion. "What is something they get, that I don't get." I honestly end up getting angry at myself sometimes cause it's like "Is it my fault, like am I interpreting this differently?" So I totally get the immense frustration with it to the point of even crying a little 😅

I love the Twitches movies and watch them every October as they’re very campy, fun films for me. But there’s no piece of media, however popular, that doesn’t have people that don’t see the hype or dislike it. It’s normal; never let anyone make you feel like it’s not.

I really really don't like the "black struggle" stories being put front and center when it comes to black media that gets popular. And it doesn't /have/ to be the worst thing ever; it just gets incredibly tired seeing so and so's messy life part 22 and "racism was the 'real' villain all along". There's stuff I've seen get hyped, and just...wasn't interested when I saw what it actually was. Sometimes saying "it's not bad, but I'm not a fan" is enough for some people to have a huge issue. Disliking something doesn't have to be a moral judgement or anything, you know. Some stuff is literally just whatever

There are so many things I dislike that everyone else seems to love. The biggest example I can think of is the sitcom How I met your Mother. I absolutely hate How I met your Mother. The characters are hateful, the show glorifies misogynistic attitudes, sexual impropriety, rape culture and the show is overall just so painfully unfunny. I get so many hate from HIMYM fans and I even got some death threats from them. I would rather have different opinions than be forced into doing something I don’t wanna do. It’s probably because I’m a neurodiverse Scorpio, but I’ve always been opinionated and have never given a second thought about other opinions.

I've always felt so bad and conflicted whenever I see people enjoying a very popular or favourable piece of media, but I do not. I get so frustrated whenever that happens cause it's like "what is something about this thing that people like so much that I don't enjoy so much." "Am I the A-hole?" "Am I misinterpreting something here?" "Do I need to re-watch this again to understand it better?" So many questions like this fly through my mind, but now I just realized and accepted that No.1 Not everything is for me or my taste, No.2 It's fine to just not vibe with either the concept, plot, theme, characters etc. from this piece and that being a valid reason to not favour this piece as much. For example: Personally I find it very hard to get into films/ books focusing around or with vampires. (also the reason why I didn't find a slight interest in Twilight) I don't like vampires, I don't find the concept of vampires that interesting, vampires in general just aren't that fascinating to me. I think this is partially because I grew up around an era where the concept of vampires was such a big thing, and often a cliche + oversaturated concept, that I automatically lost interest with the whole concept in itself. The thing that helps me with this issue (The issue of feeling bad/ guilty for disliking something most people like) is finding specifically WHAT is the reason for my dislike/ uninterest and also WHY. Sometimes it's not even that I dislike the piece, but that I just don't feel emotionally invested in this specific piece in any way. Like, that could just be it and I think that's also valid. Some things aren't for everyone and that could be just for the sake of... idk taste🤷‍♀
