After three hours of nerding out over an excel sheet, I put together the costs of taking a travel nurse contract in Alaska with a family of 5. While we didn't quite break even, this was the trip of a lifetime and we have zero regrets. We'll break down what we spent over 16 weeks for food, fuel, lodging, repairs and excursions starting from the moment we crossed the Canadian Border to when we made the return back to the lower 48.

We are glad you came for the experience. Living in Alaska isn't cheap. We don't do much traveling because of the price of fuel. But we often make the 400 mile round trip to Anchorage to shop at Costco and stock up. During the winter we are at home a lot. We combine our hunting with our recreation most of the time. We live rurally so getting away from the crowd isn't a problem. Moose, snow shoe hare, owls, caribou, fox, lynx and all our beautiful bird friends are our neighbors.

Wow, in 1999 my wife and I pulled our 24' travel trailer from VT up to Quebec and picked up the trans Canada across to the Alaskan Hwy, spent a month touring Alaska, back down Cassiar to Vancouver, down into Washington and Oregon, and then back across northern tier states. Total 2 1/2 months and 14,000 miles. Our total expenses for the 2 of us were $2,900!

I’m a nurse in Alaska. I offered free housing to adults who had a job in exchange for house cleaning once a week and letting my dogs in and out when I wasn’t home. My ad said something like save money blah blah.. Not a single travel nurse responded to my ad. In fact, the only responses I got were from people who didn’t have transportation and/or a job. Of course, I was most definitely not offering to host a family.

Well documented. The numbers are a surprise for sure. I live in Edmonton and will watch for you guys coming down through. Hope you go from Grande Prairie south to Grande Cache south to Hinton which puts you really close to Jasper, AB which I really, really hop you go to. You won’t want to mis Jasper I guarantee it unless your in a time crunch. Safe travels you guys. PLUS ! if John’s next contract is back in Arizona for the winter, you should take hwy 93/95 south from Jasper to Lake Louise and Banff. This route is a MUST DO if you’re going to cross into Montana again. You’ll kick yourself if you don’t. It’s a more magnificent view of the fantastic Canadian Rocky Mountains - more spectacular than the Alaskan mountains and the Colorado Rockies. You won’t want to miss it.

Hi there! I just found your channel today because I am trying to prepare myself for an assignment I just got in Anchorage, AK starting in August! I am super excited to get up there (From South Carolina (dreading the cost)) and this was very informative. I am a single traveler, but I am going to have several visitors during my assignment haha, so it's nice to have all the numbers. And I absolutely agree with you as far as pay goes; they went down on their rates, but I said, it's now or never because my license finally came through, and I wasn't about to let all this opportunity pass! How amazing that you were able to make such great memories with your family! Thank you for this video! It's still useful even a year later!

Don't let this scare you into not going, particularly if you are going on vacation and have flexibility. Boondocking and state and Federal campgrounds save a lot, cook your own meals, only bring one vehicle which is your tow vehicle. We drove up from NH a few years ago with a F150 pulling a small travel trailer spent about a month and a half travelling around and made a side trip to Utah and Washington the way back and used about 1300 gallons of gasoline.

Well, I am from CT and I still live in CT, went I took my first job in Alaska, I am a professional pilot. I was told to be prepared for the price shock. I was not. I thought all and all things are pretty reasonable. You go off the road system and then things start to go up. I don't drink or like to party, so it was pretty easy for me to Fly for the season, drive back to CT, do a bit of fishing on the way home and have plenty of money in my checkbook. Only once did I take a job that I barely broke even on. It was a back year for the contract helicopter jobs. It seems to me that you spend way too much money on going out to eat, I know the feeling, I had a major sushi addiction on one of the contracts I was on, I got turned on to that and well I still to this day spend more than I should on the fish!

Well a lot of Americans don’t realize the two mOst expensive states is Alaska and Hawaii. Everything is shipped by boat or plane from the main land. I can’t see any shipping trucks going through Canada and dealing with the boarders twice, to much hassle from both countries and the cost and time of idling. You won’t get your products on time.Northern Canada is the same way ,even it’s in the same province. The price is determined by shipping and geographical, and heavy dense populations. Nice breakdown on the cost of living in that state, hope everything works out in the end. And maybe some Americans will understand what us Canadians go through on a yearly basis, on what it cost us to live in this country 🇨🇦
@NoOrdinaryPath
@NoOrdinaryPath 3 жыл бұрын
We realized it and expected it. Just like we expect Hawaii to be pricey when we make that contract happen sometime in the future (fingers crossed). I'm really not complaining about the cost so much as just amazed at how it really does add up over time. I'm sorry your prices in Canada are so high - that must be so frustrating.
@erniearruda8861
@erniearruda8861 3 жыл бұрын
@@NoOrdinaryPath that’s funny now you sound like a Canadian saying sorry for our prices(lol🤣) It is what it is . I live in southern Ontario Canada so prices are competitive and at reasonable price. But the real Northern town and remote communities have it hard on prices.Also to note in through your travels to Canada and it depends on each province tax is between 5 to 13% on top of what you buy. It’s not included on the price tag. Except for some food groceries, like raw meats,fruit,and processed frozen boxed meals etc.. But you do pay tax on top of the price if a store clerk makes fresh packaged salad kits, sandwiches, stews and soups to go.That would be GST ( good and service tax)5% federal tax that’s across the board. Then you may have provincial or territory tax Ontario it’s 7 percent but most of everything is combined to one tax called HST ( harmonized sevice tax) so it’s 13 percent. As you went through Canada to go through Alaska you probably had a wide opening on the price of fuel. Yes some provinces and cities will have different fuel prices and about 50 percent that included in the price of fuel is TAX. So for your Jeep in the states that would cost you around 45 to 50 dollars US and same Jeep here in Canada in Southern Ontario will cost to fill up around $85 Canadian.A lot has to do with our dollars between the USA. It just sucks seeing your prices being reasonable on stuff and then doing the conversion it puts a downer on us.

A driving trip to Alaska is not for poor. When I went in 1994 the truck ate a whole lot better than I did. 😳 I went through a lot of money when I went and did trips and tours I probably wouldn’t have done otherwise but my rationale was when would I have the chance to do it again. I did go back for two weeks twenty years later, fly and rent an SUV.

But I bet you have some pretty fond memories. :) That's funny that your truck ate better than you. Today we made a big deal out of a large pot of ramen noodles. We are enjoying Canada now. :) We have plans to see family in a week so we didn't get to spend as much time as we had hoped in Canada but we hope to be back and really spend some time here. As for regular costs per week - that is a great question! I have never broken a contract down in this specific way before so I'm not positive but I did do a pretty detailed budget video a little while back and came to a monthly total of about $3800. We used to say we needed $1000 per week to be comfortable but could make it work on less than that if needed.

I want to do this trip in 2022 or 23. My nieces live in Talkeetna so I'm not worried so much for park cost. I'll moochdock. I looked up the cost of the Alaskan ferries and yes it's super expensive however, for some reason the ferry there is double the price of the return. I thought it would have been equal. Something I was thinking about a couple of months ago is I wonder if there are ferry companies that are not as highly advertised as the two big ones and maybe if you go to Bellingham, WA and book local you might find a cheaper rate. I am single so for me I can take the delayed risks that you might not be able to do with a family of five. The worst part of the ferry is your dog must stay with your RV in the car level and they only allow you to visit your dog twice per day for potty breaks. The dogs are not allowed in passenger areas unless they are Certified Service Animals. The other bad thing is the ferries charge you for the length of all your vehicles combined. Your truck is what 17 feet? Jeep 15 feet and your trailer and tongue. They measure from bumper to any rear accessory or tire mount. As far as food expenses, I would definitely pre-plan and fill the back of the truck and Jeep with as much pre-packaged foods as possible that won't spoil. Tuna, soups, noodle packets, canned goods etc. Maintenance and repairs is a hit or miss. It might be good to give your entire set up a good inspection before the journey and get repairs done before going. I am so glad your family got to experience this. You can't put a price on the experience. You definitely came out ahead.
@NoOrdinaryPath
@NoOrdinaryPath 3 жыл бұрын
All excellent points. The dogs on the ferries must be so scared - I know Cinder would be. She would deal with it but it would make her so nervous. Food was up and down for us. Some weeks I would do better at planning and cooking at home and others were so busy I didn't want to think about cooking. haha. We did a lot of prep for our trip including almost an entire new underbelly for the RV. New axels, new upgraded suspension, beefy leaf springs, cross supports, brakes, and tires. We ended up needing two new tires in Alaska, had a couple of broken slide cables and oil change, fuel filter change to the vehicles. We just put a lot of wear on them so I'm not that surprised. Anyway, in the end it was pricey but so worth it. :)

How do your expenses compare in the lower 48 and in Alaska? I have lived in Alaska for almost 50 years and now travel in the southwest during the winter (stayed here this winter due to Covid in Arizona and Calif). Groceries are cheaper, but other expenses are not that much cheaper.

I’m planning to get a generator. I’m thinking about getting a duel powered unit. Do you think it is more expensive to run it on gas or propane? I like the idea of using propane better than gas. Your thoughts please. Thanks.

Honestly it depends on the area as far as prices go. Averaged out we don't see much difference. in cost but we now use pretty much just propane because it runs quieter and cleaner. Using gasoline gunks it up over time.

DAMN, WAGES HAD BETTER MAKE THE COMMITMENT WORTH IT. I WOULDN'T REGRET THE EXPERIENCE EITHER. BUT I FOR DAMN SURE WOULD KNOW BETTER NEXT TIME. OUCH

We knew up front it would be pricey and we would likely dip into savings a little. Although John's wages did not cover the cost, we had other income and some savings that made up the difference. We have zero regrets. :) The bummer is they raised the pay for incoming travel nurses the last month he was there to a crisis rate. He was unable to get bumped to the higher amount because of his start date. It was super frustrating but we made it work.

But, did you go to Moose’s Tooth Pizza? Yes, Alaska is expensive. We lived there 3 years. Like you said, no regrets.

Haha! Well John had some at work one time but we never did go there. I had heard about it but honestly forgot. One time we considered it for dinner but the wait was so long - probably a good sign though. I guess we'll have to go back. haha

When you think you can finally visit Alaska and you hear the price involved. Alaska is like your only trip for the year. Unless you get a temporary job up there. 😅 🤔

I think it can be done cheaper - we were there for 4 months. BUT having a job kept us afloat and enabled us to adventure.

We left Alaska from Eagle after to weeks of Boondocking . it was snowing in the elevations . Got snowed in Canada over nite with 8" of snow highway was clear by 2 the next day an drive 30 miles into 80 degree weather. 3 months in alaska was awesome. We are hopefully going back to Alaska in 2022. We want to spend the whole year. My wife will probably fly back around the holidays I'm staying. I love Alaska it's in my blood

If its not too personal, what insurance do you an John use as a travel family. You mentioned health share. Is that the Christian based sharing program? If so how well does it work for you and how widely accepted has it been through different travel companies and different states? Do you have could contact info for the company? Thanks and safe travels!

We use Christian Health Share for health insurance (it works different from insurance though) and then we have dental and vision through Atlas Medstaff - John's travel nurse agency. Here's more info on it. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpaqg52NhryFrNU

Why would anyone want to go to Alaska with a family as a travel nurse? Everything has to be shipped up there so it's super expensive and desolate. Kind of dangerous actually to even be driving around some areas, if you have vehicle problems could end up freezing to death.

We didn't ship anything there Willie. "Why would a family want to go to AK?" 🤣 Are you serious? Desolate?! Bwahaha!! Have you SEEN any of our footage? Thanks for watching tho, hopefully you'll see and focus on how happy we were.

Not as much as going and blowing it completely to come home to a mountain of debt you shouldn't have. Kinda takes away from the magic. Also, this wasn't a vacation for us.
