There's a mix of both the Wilder and Depp version within Chalamet's performance for Wonka and he balances it really well. I was surprised by how much I liked it, and even more pleasantly surprised that it was a musical! I think characters like Mrs. Scrubbit and Bleacher, and Prodnose from the Chocolate Cartel felt like they could've existed in Roald Dahl's writings. Very great reaction as always!

Yes, Timothée Chalamet was the perfect choice for this role since he does have a expressive face that demonstrates his optimism and wonder that he adds to the world. Plus, his whole attire as Willy Wonka captures that perfectly since he looks great while doing it.

Mrs. Scrubbit is actually based on a short story of Roald Dahl’s; “The Landlady”, and I personally head canon her and Mr. bleacher’s designs are based off The Twits The Chocolate Cartel is not just inspired by the names of the characters, Slugworth, Fickleguber and Prodnose, from the books and the movies, but their inspiration and personalities also were taken from Farmers Boggus, Bunce and Bean from Fantastic Mr. Fox. Abigail the Giraffe may be an inspiration to the Giraffe from the Dahl book; The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.

My main positive with this movie is that it brought back that child-like feeling that Hollywood is heavily lacking today. It's also pretty dark for a kids movie as the story of Wonka usually is. The implied murders and money laundering, the cartel having actually killed prior competition, and then the end of the cartel more than likely dying at the end. I also get the sense that while Wonka is very naive and joyful in this movie, the world he lives in will slowly turn him into the man Gene and Johnny's Wonka showed until Charlie comes. Great movie, absolutely loved it.

As a 50 something who was a blond haired boy who shared a name with a certain character and felt a bit of an outcast growing up, the original Gene Wilder movie was something I conected with. I went into this skeptical but hopeful. Came out with such a smile. It captured a lot of the magic the Johnny Depp version lost sight of. Even being a new fan fiction type story, it had the feel of a Roald Dahl inspired adaption. It did it's job as feel good movie.

Timothée has a TON of amazing film work, you should watch Beautiful Boy, The King, Bones and All, Little Women, The French Dispatch, Don’t Look Up, he also is in Lady Bird and Interstellar. Obviously, Call Me by Your Name is an amazing film and shot him into the limelight, a suggestion when watching that TISSUES. Anyways, hope you are well :)

Nice reaction, Natalie. What I love about this movie is that throughout the film, even in his darkest hour, Wonka had never given up the dream that he had ever since he tasted his mother’s chocolate. Like her, he wanted to share this gift to the world and he did just that by giving the people a preview of his products and in time, it grew into the factory that we know and love. He made his chocolate special by adding some twists and turns by also using ingredients that he acquired throughout his travels. In the end, he has become a true philanthropist that even Slugworth and his partners in crime couldn’t tolerate the fact the he was selling his product in a very reasonable price since in the real world, items that are made with high-quality materials are sold expensively. For those who have a sweet tooth, I don’t blame them because anything laced with sugar is very hard to overcome, which is why we must watch ourselves, from time to time. 😉

Chalamet is in The King, and I think you will find some interesting elements in it. And of course in the modern Little Women, and it’s definitely worth a watch, it does a very very clever change that is a meta commentary on the publishing of the original book and author’s experience with the publisher.

When I saw the name Timotheé Chalamet (yes, he's that good, imo), I knew I had to watch it, and was very pleased to watch something that was classical yet newer. I love the magical, dreamy, quirky and somewhat illogical vibe of the film. It's totally a movie for dreamers which the movie makers didn't have to try to forcefully make feel it that way. And the music is as fun and whimsical as any musicals can be. The entire cast did an absolutely excellent job, it's like Timothee was working WITH them and not them working FOR him. The balance was balancing. So glad that you finally watched it (and loved it) too. This is one of the few movies that I truly enjoyed watching from last year.

For some reason, Hollywood really wants to make musicals without advertising the films as musicals and this is one of those films. I saw it in theaters with my mother, uncle, aunt, and cousin and had a good time. People had concerns about whether Timothee Chalamet would be more like Gene Wilder or more like Johnny Depp, but he really was his own Wonka.

I saw this in theaters with my niece and was pleasantly surprised, as the trailers had me thinking I would hate it, for reasons I can no longer recall. (I think my initial thought was the movie was WAY more twee than Roald Dahl ever was.) And, to be fair, there were probably moments here and there that Dahl would have perhaps hated, and I was mildly (but only mildly) annoyed that it's implied that all his mannerisms and eccentricities were already fully baked in to him at this young age rather than a cumulative result of being an older cynical Wonka who's looking to retire and pass along his empire after years of being a recluse. Also, he was WAY more magical at this stage than he was in his later years for whatever reason. But eventually I told the analytical side of my brain to shut up and just enjoyed the whimsy and wonder.

I thought there were some good homages to Denny DeVito and his tribute and interpretation of the Roald Dahl classic Matilda. For example the angle with which they shot/portrayed the antagonist inn keepers is very similar to how the Trunchbull is portrayed. Also the little dungeon is like the chokey. Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if that was intentional and or a tribute to how perfectly DeVito captured the essence of Roald Dahl pitting children against rotten adults.

So here goes an awsome detail. When willy is charged for daydreaming he had 6 coins, he doesn't know how to read so he gave 4 to the officer instead of 3 like the sign indicated. You know this because he gave one to the lady with a baby and lost his ramaining one, if he had given 3 to the officer he would have had 1 extra silver coin after he lost one to the drain. And there's a small pay off for this, when his money is confiscated in his first public act he says to the officer if he could have at least one to pay for his room, this officer is the same that charged him for daydreaming, so when he gives this coin to wonka he is not giving him any of the money he earned selling chocolate he is giving him back the one extra silver coin wonka gave him. This show this one cop is not a crook or corrupt, he follows orders to a tea and is honest, he just gave wonka the one coin that was legally his.

I saw it in the theaters on opening weekend. I had no expectations about the film and hadn't seen anything that Chalamet had done prior to this. I grew up with the Wilder film also. This film did not disappoint and I enjoyed watching your review! You got emotional at the same parts I did. I will definitely rewatch this film. Now I need to see more Paul King films. I hope the rumors of a sequel are true if it can be this good.

While I love the movie, and especially love the homages to the original film, they broke away from the original story by bringing in the Oompa Loompa, although that could be explained away, Wonka did not find the Oompa Loompas until his factory was already up and running, then Slugworth sent spies into his factory to "steal his candy-making secrets", threw everyone out, yelled, "I shall be ruined" and shut the doors. Then, one day, the factory started running again, turning out more candy than ever before. That was when he found the Oompa Loompas and they created the "fantasy world" inside the factory.
