For several reasons, I actually think this is the superior version: - More book accurate - Better ending - More interesting characterisation (the original characters were really basic and flat) - Mr Bucket exists - Better grandparents - Superb sets - Varied and catchy music - Wonka’s backstory - Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too saccharine)

Prefer the OG movie. More realistic, actual sets, not just 1 oompa loompa, had better choreo and more memorable songs. People had different personalities instead of just being a character over the top archetype. Wonka was an eccentric instead of the 2000's trope of making everyone a trauma victim.
@harwickbranch Жыл бұрын
I prefer almost everything about this one except Wonka himself. Depp’s portrayal is great but Wilder is just on another level
@ashhabimran239 Жыл бұрын
@@xejelah It’s meant to be whimsical, not realistic (realism is overrated, realistic doesn’t always mean better) Actual sets? The 2005 movie also has actual sets (which are more impressive than the original). One Oompa Loompa is a feat more than anything. Saying the original had better choreography is just false. Memorable doesn’t mean better. The newer songs feel like they had so much more care and detail put into them than just being the same copy/paste template. Even the genres of the newer songs reflect the kid they're singing about. And what you said about the characters makes no sense and is genuinely wrong. The original characters were the basic, boring and trope-y ones. It’s a good decision to dial up the nastiness of the other 4 kids, makes you feel less bad for them. It really feels like people only like the original because it's the oRiGInAl and the stupid mindset that the original is always the best. They think the original movie is the source material when the source material is the book (which the 2005 movie does more justice to)

Burton was completely against using CGI if he could help it, and this is another example. All the squirrels you see? They're real. In fact, they're rescue squirrels that Burton specifically hired someone to train them to do all these scenes. He even named them. If you really want specifics, the real ones are whenever you get a close up of one, when they first attack Veruca's stunt double, and when that one squirrel pushes the dad in after her. Also, apparently this is supposed to be ironic. She exploited nut workers to get what she wanted in the beginning, tried to do the same thing here, and it backfired.

I know a lot of people are somewhat mixed on this version following the book, over the less accurate, more cheery nature of the original 70's version, but for me, that's what makes this version better, in it's core Ronald Dahl's books always had some form of dark undertone in most of his works (however you may feel personally about the man in question or his works) so it does fit with the original theme of it
@elizabethfeuerbach5006 Жыл бұрын
Actually, Roald Dahl hated the 70s version. Even though he wrote the script, so many changes were made that Dahl didn't approve. Some were even made without him knowing. The bucket house is actually the reason the movie got the green light from Roald Dahl's widow. Why? It's based off of Dahl's famous writing shed. It's common knowledge that Dahl hated the original, so naturally she was protective of any future adaptations. But when she saw the house, and found out they'd designed the Bucket house like that on purpose? That sold the deal for her.

Say what you want about them playing the dementia trope for laughs, but according to people with family members who have dementia, they all learned to treasure every moment of clarity like it's the last one. Like Charlie's doing here.
@Br0nto5aurus Жыл бұрын
As I understand it, one possible symptom of dementia is childishness, which can be a joy to be around for their family, and have plenty of laughs. I distinctly remember a man posting about a check given to him by his grandmother with dementia, and the memo read "for candy and bubblegum". It was hilarious and adorable. I don't see anything wrong with that, especially when it seems to be a fairly accurate depiction. Another possible symptom of dementia is violent outbursts. I'd have more of a problem with media primarily depicting dementia violently, even if it's accurate, because it might cause viewers to think all people with dementia are violent, always dangerous, and to be feared.

It's hard when the original movie was so beloved. But also, I think most people's exposure to the story was the original movie and not the book? It seems a lot of people didn't even know there _was_ a book, let alone that it was the original story, so they automatically assumed it was a remake rather than a retelling. The only issue I have with this version is the CGI. It tells a much better story than the original (makes sense since it's closer to the source material), the acting is perfect and all the music is fantastic. It's just the SnapChat filter on everyone, duplicating one actor for all the oompa-loompas and some of the other effects keep jarring me out of it. It's like it was 18 years too early for all the spectacle they wanted to show.

Naturally some things had to be updated to be relevant, and making Mike Teevee a genius because of technology was a brilliant way to do it. Also establishes he just did it because he could. You can see he got no real enjoyment out of it.

Just seeing this now, but I’ll definitely watch when the live’s over❤️ I know lots of people prefer the original with Gene Wilder, but I love both equally. When it comes to this one, the songs are complete BOPS like you said. Also Johnny Depp’s comedic timing is just top notch!!👌🏽 so many laughs from him. He was a great Willy Wonka!

The Oompa Loompas are played by the same guy (Deep Roy) and he had to repeat the dance scenes over and over. Deep Roy was also in The Grinch where he was a post office worker.

It’s often been a misconception that Johnny Depp’s Wonka was modeled after Michael Jackson. Depp admitted his approach to the role was the mix of a children’s show host with the voice as if George W. Bush was stoned out of his mind.

This wasn’t a Christmas movie, it came out in summer. I remember because I saw it on my birthday and then one more time lol. The movie with Gene Wilder was not as loyal to the book as this one. The book itself is called CHARLIE and the Chocolate Factory. The sequel is called Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. They take the elevator into space. So yeah, the movie is supposed to be surreal and yeah, Wonka is supposed to be a weirdo! Roald Dahl did not shy away from the supernatural and otherworldly. He also wrote Matilda, the BFG and James & the Giant Peach. I loved his books as a child.

***I mentioned the sequel because they literally have space adventures & it shows that the story is set in a universe where there are aliens 😂 so like it’s supposed to be a crazy ass story.

17:12 those dolls reminds me of chucky so hard. Hope I get to see you watch Chucky soon! Child's play triology, Bride of Chucky (my absolute favorite), Seed of Chucky and more I just watched Wonka today too and both that movie and this one are so very different. It almost seems like Wonka's a different universe. But tbh i think Wonka makes a nice winter holiday movie

When I was a kid, I found myself relating to the bad kids in this movie 🤦🏾♀️. I was an only child/Dad’s little princess 👑 like Veruca. I did Karate & had a gum addiction like Violet (still do…can’t go a day w/o it 😩). My family is half German & I was a chubby chocoholic 🍫 like Augustus. And I was a gamer like Mike (if playing my game boy/ninetendo ds non-stop counts). Yikes 😳. LOL! But I’d like to think I was & still am kind hearted 💗 like Charlie!

There's a lot of great elements of this film that really captured some of the magic of the original book. I particularly like how they set it in an environment that could be in the UK or US, since the book was set in either as there were slight publication changes like the currency Charlie finds. That's why there's so many American and English accents mixed up, like Willy Wonka is American but his father Wilbur is English. Also Danny Elfman's soundtrack. While I love Pure Imagination in the OG film, I love how Elfman took the Oompa Loompa poems/chants from the book and made them into such unique songs. I even like the backstory given to Wonka, I love the moment how his father says 'I won't be here when you get back' and in child Wonka's mind the house has now gone. But when he goes back as an adult his father is the only one there. I think the only major downside is Depp's Wonka. I get they were inspired by Michael Jackson as this man who never grew up, but it just comes across as a bit too creepy, especially if you believe certain things about Jackson. I think somewhere between the two films there is a perfect iteration. I'm interested to see how Wonka turns out. It feels a pretty unnecessary film, and it looks like it'll be a bit sickly sweet for a Dahl inspired story, but Chalamet as Wonka seems promising, and I like how they're using characters like Slugworth, Fickelgruber and Prodnose as the antagonists. Also since Fickelgruber is played by Mathew Baynton and one of the screenwriters is Simon Farnaby (both excellent writers/actors on Horrible Histories and Ghosts) it ups my excitement quite a bit.

Tim Burton had nothing to do with the first one, which was made in the 70's, not the 90's. The actor who played the original Wonka was Gene Wilder.

Got to give it up for who ever was in charge of casting. It's like this Augustus leaped right off the pages of the book. Some fun facts about the guy that played him: he's actually wearing a fat suit, actually does speak German, and didn't speak a word of English when he was cast. Also, come on. You mean to tell me biting the ticket hasn't happened more than once? The fact that it's Augustus it happened to just adds to the character.
