Am I the only one who thought the addition of places that were anti-pony was a nice touch to the lore? It made the world feel bigger and more realistic. It's not just all pony variations, it's not even all safe for pony variations. Some of it is opposing kingdoms. Which would probably be why the princesses guard their kingdom so closely and never leave.

I think the reason there are so little ponies where they go in the G4 movie so because they aren’t in equestria anymore, so ponies don’t live there. It also means it wouldn’t really make sense for Capper to be a pony because he’s supposed to be the one potential friend in a new world that wants to endanger them.

I LOVED and still love Princess Promenade. It kinda hurt to hear her talk crap about it. It had a great message that she completely missed. When wisteria reveals that she doesn't want to be a Princess anymore she says. "I just wanna be me again." She decided she wanted to be herself. And then she went on to say that everyone can be a princess if they want to. As long as they stay true to who they are. AND SHE TOTALLY GLOSSED OVER IT! IT HAD MEANING THAT EVEN 5 YEAR OLD ME UNDERSTOOD!!! And another thing... A movie does NOT have to have a villain in order to be good.

i grew up with the G1 movies and it hurt when all she did was point out all the negative things about them, acting like they were crap. but these weren't movies made with the thought that an adult or even a teenager would watch them, they're movies made for little kids and they have little kid plots. they are meant to be simple to understand. who cares how firefly got to megan, its a kids movie, she can just do that. and yes movies or any story does not need a villain to be good, it just needs conflict, and conflict can be being nervous about your first day of school. no need for some bad guy.

@@abiean222 Exactly. Little kids (3-6) don't need complex stories, they're gonna forget most of the plot anyways. Like MLP was never written for adults. It was written with small children's brains in mind. They aren't meant to have complex stories or characters. Like how Pinkie Pies entire personality before Gen4 was, "My favourite colour is PINK!" she wasn't complex in the slightest, but that's what made her a good children's character.

Very sads G1 and G3 movies got dunked on. I actually like these films a lot and not because of beautician as watched them later in life. I like the colors, chaotic dark energy of G1, the diverse species (G1) and the lore of G3’s Ponville’s past. I also like watching the old films to see how they influence MLP G4 and 5. ( I still see why the old films are weird and have horrible music though) Also a lot of the seemingly unexplained things to me are good as it gets you thinking on what could possibly fill those holes.

Always did love the G1 cartoon. Megan does live in the world we do, but the Rainbow is what parts our worlds. Kinda of like pre Rainbow Brite. The ponies that can fly would often travel over the rainbow to fetch Megan if they needed her help.

As one who was the target demographic when the very 1st MLP movie dropped it was fantastic from a child’s perspective. Yeah it’s cringey watching it today, but for children it was magical. The flippant negativity to each movie makes me sad and takes the fun out of it.

Yeah, I can see why that makes the video disappointing to watch for you, since as you say this was fairly standard kids’ media at the time. Though to be fair, though, there video also contains ‘flippant negativity’ toward the 2017 FIM (G4) movie too. (Negativity that I personally think is unfounded, since a. it felt like an average FIM two-parter in terms of quality to me and b. I REALLY love that they touched on themes like manipulation, PTSD, and disability with the character of Tempest Shadow. Though, obviously, people are free to disagree with me!) So I think, to an extent, that’s just the style of humor of this video haha?

I honestly think G4 movie is the best, bad main villain, and a lot short to explore all the art and worldbuilding of Equestria, but MLP The Movie and G1 80s are my favorites. G5 movie is a mediocre slice of life, and the only good is the animation.

Agreed, everything good about the G5 movie is surface-level. I think it only gets a free pass because it's the most current film. I would definitely rank the G4 movie at the top...well, excluding EQG films such as Rainbow Rocks, but I digress. When it comes to films from other generations, Rescue at Midnight Castle has stakes. I'm not sure about Escape from Caterina, but the feature-length G1 film also has more plot than ANG.

I definitely think the G5 movie is the best followed by the G4 film. I enjoyed the G3 special much more than Make Your Mark though- I think G3 just gives such 2000s nostalgic vibes I love it lol. G1 isn’t my cup of tea, but I had no idea how wacky it could get! I did enjoy Escape from Catrina for how crazy it was but I think overall G1 Pony Tales TV show is a much more enjoyable watch! Great video as always!

I trully feel bad hearing this video, the old movies of MLP are, within context, a very innocent and child-like approach to the franchise, maybe they are not as good in quality but they surely don't deserve such a rational and harsh commentary on them They were made for kids to enjoy something sweet when life is not very enjoyable overall, like a spa treatment to the mind, and while i'll agree maybe it had plot holes or/and very weak story telling, i like them precisely because of that. Their simple nature is so cute and conforting when you are stressed out by something, like a hug from a very close friend of yours when you had none afection throughtout the whole week/month. It is a confort zone on itself in his simple "nothing happens and everything is okay" plot structure and not many adults can understand that sort of appeal.

To be honest I really loved the g4 movie :) It felt refreshing to have the world expanded upon because I probably would have dropped the series if they kept going with the ponies. Not to mention that all these places are outside Equestria so it's natural that ponies aren't the only ones there, it was implied during the series I'm pretty sure. The only reasoning I could have for the Storm King just suddenly turning up is because he was probably waiting for four princesses, and when he found out there were four he decided to make a move and power the staff that he's probably had for a while and didn't have enough magic to use it. Alicorn magic is very powerful, so the idea that it all of it combined can regrow a horn isn't far fetched. In terms of Tempest, my theory is that she was outside of Equestria (probably Klugetown) after she ran away and the Storm King invaded. There is a chance that he manipulated her into doing the things she did because all that mattered to her was getting her horn back, so she would do anything it took to get it (not to mention that she was probably very vulnerable and felt powerless at the time, so working for the Storm King probably gave her a sense of control over her life). Also Celestia probably only mentioned the hippogriffs at that point because she most likely knew that they had been invaded, so I guess Celestia sending Twilight there was what she thought was a last desperate attempt to cling onto hope if the queen was still alive (also she probably didn't mention her at all because of lack of contact, being extremely busy or she forgot because it would have a long time since they last talked and then the sight of the Storm King reminded her about Novo.) Sorry for this being a long read but I really wanted to provide insight onto how I see the whole situation with the mlp g4 movie

I owned SO MANY mlp movies as a kid (I mean, I’m still kinda a kid, I’m nearly 17, but yknow). I still own the 80’s MLP movie, but I used to have a bunch of the G1 episodes on DVD. Then actually movie wise, I had Twinkle Wish Adventure (G3.5??), Princess Promenade, Dancing in the Clouds, The Runaway Rainbow, A Very Pony Place, A Very Minty Christmas.. I even the Worlds Biggest Tea Party musical!! I guess I’m lucky to have sort of grown up with all the generations.. sorta wish I still had all my DVDs so I could watch them again.

This made me realize how many of the MLP Movies (and specials) are centered around having a party (though the Christmas ones are totally justified in this, lol). My top three favorites are the G5 Movie, the G4 Movie, and the G1 Movie (with the G3 Special Runaway Rainbow as a runner up because I found it to be a fun and silly romp). It's hard to pick an overall favorite because while they all have their faults, they all provide great stories! My three favorite specials are Rescue at Midnight Castle, Rainbow Roadtrip, and Forgotten Friendship. Oh, and I used to also be upset that Twilight tried to steal the Sea Pony/Hippogryph Pearl, but came to realize that she was stressed the entire journey trying to make things right in any way she can. She wanted to rescue everyone and did this in a fit of desperation, knowing she was the final piece to Storm King's staff and running away had her at her limit.

I wish they made a movie in 2010 at the beginning of my little pony g4 because the first two episodes were rushed the beginning of the 6 mane was rush and nightmare moon didn’t have a lot of screen time and evil plans, having a movie instead would give the origin of the 6 mane more meaning and would give nightmare moon more screen time and make her more evil, I think that would have been much better than what we got in 2017

I know I have nostalgia glasses on, but Midnight Castle was my first experience with MLP as a young kid. And yeah, as you pointed out, 80s cartoons didn't pay too much attention to characterization or the why's and how's of things, but the show is a heckin' good romp with plenty to expand on, doesn't pull punches with the scary bad guys, and actually has good female leads that take action, all whilst not giving two grapes about how their hair or makeup look (which is nice considering the very materialistic and whingy turn MLP took later on before MLP:FiM). It wasn't pushing political or social agendas, either; just a group of ponies plus a human going on a magical adventure and saving the world. I really don't think it needed any more than that. And also Tirek's design here is way better than his future iteration~

I’m surprised you didn’t include Runaway Rainbow and A Very Minty Christmas as well as the Equestria Girls movies, then again, EQG is a whole other story in regards to pony movies haha. I can definitely agree that G4 and G5 have the best movies due to the higher quality of storyline, characters and animation. Rescue at Midnight Castle I also love due to how it was the production that started it all and I love the Renaissance of Disney feel it has to it with the animation style and its use of themes (and violence!) and its Earthy colouring! I’m glad someone else agrees that the surplus of non pony characters is what brought it down slightly! The other G1 movies are definitely not as great as Rescue but the original smooze (schmooze?) is definitely a fantastic concept. Princess Promenade is definitely the least impactful of the G3 movies but Runaway Rainbow was always my favourite (because Cheerilee is best pony, the original purple unicorn Cheerilee *not* Core 7 pink Earth Pony Cheerilee). All of the G3 songs will always have a special place in my heart

Also surprised none of the Butterfly Island movies were mentioned, I still have Friends are never Far Away on disc in fact! There's even 9 movies from G3 total and I think Minty Christmas was the only Christmas movie from G3. I wish some of the other movies from G3 were given love, I loved Runaway Rainbow, FNFA, Minty Christmas and Princess Promenade as a kid, those films had been my introduction to MLP and they definitely deserve the attention... idk with the knowledge of how many films were missed from G3, it leaves a poor taste in my mouth with the title being "all mlp movies"

MLP G1 is literally an Isekai. I only watched Rescue at Midnight Castle. It made me feel like I was missing a ton of context even though it was the first MLP animated thing ever made. I think I like the G4 movie more than the G5 movie. It has a more legit villain (two of them, actually) and it has a protagonist who buckles under the pressure and screws up in a believable way, but still does the right thing in the end. And it makes an effort to welcome new people to this 7-season-long story by being very didactic about how the world works and the characters' group dynamic (which is what makes them seem slightly flanderized), and by spending most of its runtime in places that had never been shown before anyway. Too bad that effort wasn't appreciated by people who weren't already in the fandom. I did get my dad to watch it in the theater, but he only said that the songs were nice. My main gripe with the movie is how the ponies were completely unaware of the atrocities going on right outside their kingdom. That could be seen as a setup for the last 2 season of the show though. Maybe that's when Celestia decided it was time for her to retire. The G5 movie is the prettiest of them all by far, no doubt about that, and for the first half it has a decent plot, but from the moment they find out about the crystals at the balloon station, it falls apart. There are good individual scenes in the second half, like the campfire scene and the Fit Right In song, but the overall plot just doesn't make that much sense anymore, and creates tons of continuity problems that the directors never thought of solutions for, as they admitted. Also Sunny's character arc is actually a full circle, which isn't very compelling. But by the way, they do explain how Queen Haven found Zipp and Pipp. She followed Cloudpuff who was tracking down Hitch by scent. Anyway, my favorite MLP movie is Friendship Games. Yeah I went there.

I really like the 2017 movie, but also HELL YEAH FRIENDSHIP GAMES. :D For me I think my favorite MLP movie is a toss-up between the two (perhaps not coincifentally, two of my favorite MLP characters are Sunset Shimmer and Tempest Shadow LOL)

One thing I disagree about the G4 movie, is that changing Capper to a pony wold make the story the same. It wouldn't, while this movie has lots of flaws, one of the good things about it was exploring the world way more than ever, showing different species in the society (not only dragons and gryphons and a few others), but also expanding the possibility of having way more species around. And it does seem like them not knowing about other kingdom is a bit odd, we have to remember that Queen Chrysalis' nest was also somewhere in the world and they didn't find it...

I kind like the orginals cause of how kind they are to their friends - like the other versions and for being unsuspected/unpredictable it's ment for kids and to be fun - and it was a start point for the later remakes/generations and allowed opptuntity for improvement with some of the same characters for the later versions

The Smooze was nightmare fuel when I was 4. I loved watching MLP because my mom had videotaped all the movies and shows when my older siblings were little and I grew up rewatching them. And I loved the My Little Pony movie, but I had recurring nightmares of being chased by smooze 😅

You forgot one. The Runaway Rainbow. Idk if it's exactly a film but it is g3. It's a bit better than the one you talk about here. Rarity is very different from the g4 version in Runaway Rainbow..then again Rainbow Dash is too so.

I never saw the G1 and G3 movies, but I have seen the G4 and G5 movies. Let me start off with G4 When I first watched the 2017 My Little Pony movie, I thought it was good, but I think the movie could be a little better because some of the ponies in the mane 6 just stand in the background. I will say I like Rainbow Road Trip and it is better than the movie. The reason I like Rainbow Road trip is because every pony in the mane 6 gets to shine in this story. Now let's get into G5 The New Generation Movie is really good and I think you can tell this is a continuation from Friendship is Magic and there are references from Friendship is Magic and Equrestria Girls I spotted in the movie. I will say the animation is really good in this movie and after the movie was over, I was wondering where they might be going from there. I will say the Make your Mark special is the weakest special and I think it could have been better and the animation is so bad in this special, but I can't wait for the TV series to come out. I do have a question would you do the same for the Equrestria Girls movies and specials?

None of them were taking the situation seriously especially because Pinkie Pie almost died by falling down that rope, Rainbow Dash performed a sonic rainboom, and Rarity helped a cat who Twilight specifically said she did not trust, and she ended up being right about everything. Her friends clearly didn’t understand the stakes of the situation, and I find that so ignorant on their part. The Storm King and Tempest literally wanted to turn Twi to stone!

All the other foals ostracized her for her instability and scars. Also "neither was Twilight", when Twilight always got 10 times more attention from others than she ever wanted, even after she climbed down from her ivory tower. There's also some subtext in that Fizzlepop apparently only had unicorn friends in her village. Maybe if she knew some earth ponies or pegasi, she wouldn't have felt so isolated because of her disability, just like Scootaloo. And maybe that is why Twilight was organizing the festival in the first place. To get ponies from all over Equestria to meet and learn about each other's different cultures and ways of life, so no one felt like they didn't belong (this is even spelled out in the original opening scene that got cut). So the one who ruined the party was the one who could have benefitted from it if it had happened a few years earlier. Also, I hadn't even noticed that Ponyville got destroyed in the background, but presumably it was magically rebuilt at the end like Canterlot. No point in going too crazy with the tv show's status quo during the movie, it would just confuse people.

​@@yondaime500 It was the shot where Tempest's ship was bringing the captured Twilight back to Canterlot. The wide shot shows smoke rising from Ponyville and no structure left standing. You only know it's Ponyville because it's the only town close to Canterlot. Also, the kingdom fell in seconds because Royal Guards and Wonderbolts just ceased to be a thing. Tempest's friends were afraid of her magic bursts she couldn't control. I HIGHLY doubt an Earth Pony or Pegasus foal would be any more receptive to such power sporadically sparking at them. Tempest had good reason to despise her own kind and it's no wonder she had no problem invading and enslaving them all. She says it was just to get her horn back but I'm guessing she got quite a bit of satisfaction brining all of Equestria to it's knees.

Maybe if she could hang out with folks who didn't use magic in the first place, she wouldn't have had that problem. I don't know, it seems to fit the movie's theme. Now I am sad that they didn't include a scene with Scootaloo to draw that parallel. Anyway, the Royal Guard and the Wonderbolts have always been kind of a meme when it comes to defending Equestria. Even when they are on high alert and expecting an attack (A Canterlot Wedding, Twilight's Kingdom, The Ending of the End), they still can't do anything. It's more surprising that Starlight Glimmer gets defeated offscreen, and Discord doesn't even bother to show up. But that was probably to keep the movie simple for new viewers and not spend too much time on endless fight scenes with side characters.

So I'm just going off of what I see on the screen. My point is that if Scootaloo lived in Cloudsdale where there are only pegasi, she would have been much more isolated due to her disability, regardless of whether the other pegasi would bully her for it (and they would, as we saw with Fluttershy's and Gilda's flashbacks). She was much better off in a place like Ponyville, and maybe Fizzlepop would have been as well. Or maybe there were other pony kinds in her village and they hated her too, who knows. The movie doesn't show it, so I think either interpretation is valid.
