Ian Hislop is that rare being. intelligent, sharp, funny with a strong sense of right and wrong and the skill to express in ways that doesn't patronise his audience or insult intelligence. We need more like him.

I spent thirty years in public service. I always treated public money as if it were my own. I successfully managed numerous large public construction projects, 95% of which came in on time and budget. My reward? Suspension and then quietly retired for refusing to fudge the numbers. Politicians and senior public servants are now so morally bankrupt that their leadership constitutes a real danger to civil society. They deserve nothing but contempt.

This is the first I Am Incorrigible video I've watched. After seeing Ian Hislop's testimony, I understand his frequent jokes during Have I Got News For You Appearances about the numerous libel suits he has faced. Not that there was anything particularly offensive about anything he said. Just that those in power tend to object to people telling the truth about them when that truth is even the least bit inconvenient for the public appearance of the rich and powerful. We have a few journalists in the USA who treat their work similar to Mr. Hislop and Mr. Brooks. Sadly, not nearly enough of them considering the level of public-private corruption that has become viewed as commonplace, acceptable political behavior.

Once it has been shown that Government officials do not have a Moral Compass Than very strict rules must be forced on them including prison time when they fail to meet those rules. This should be applied to both UK and USA Government officials. Each Country needs these kinds of rules.

The levels of corruption in this country is such a tragic joke. Most notably politicians and those in public service who are expected to be doing their best for the public. All these individuals are doing is showing how exceptionally weak of character they are.
@Technicallyimright3 жыл бұрын
I think it needs to be repeated over and over and over again that these MP’s are public servants and are given power by us, the public. At the first glance them taking the piss (and after a thorough investigation) they must be cast out of public service, lose their pensions and all benefits. They simply must be held to account if not a higher account as they are spending tax payers money.

This video sums up the problem, instead of scrutinising disgraceful behaviour by individuals, the committee is demanding those giving evidence censor their evidence and deliver it behind closed doors. Hardly surprising because MPs are part of the same club. They simply can't be trusted to hold the government and its officials to account. It needs to be done by a truly independent body.
@philipcarthy29773 жыл бұрын
Every country needs journalists like hislop, their views and commentaries are so badly needed, the corruption that occurs is heinous, all these people involved or concerned with abusing their positions need to be outed,the click which is most power establishments ie governments large corporations etc should be shamed in the public, especially government who are accountable to the voter who put them there ,there in power to serve the public and should be liable to any fraud, corruption etc.

The bit about Murdoch & Gove only really comes as a footnote at the end (could that be followed up later?). But as an insight into how our political system works - or rather, doesn't - I found it fascinating!
@dissol2 жыл бұрын
Sadly that Gove / Murdoch relationship has never ever been properly investigated. There are many, many rumours, one would have thought that if there is no truth to them, then the government would want to be able to show that. The fact that no investigation has taken place…speaks volumes. Hislop’ s shock at Gove being approved by the committee was enlightening.

A good example of the revovling door scenario is the highly technical expertise of experts in the Formula 1 motor racing area. When engineers move from one company to another in F1 they are required to take a year of what is called Gardening Leave so that the knowledge they posses has become obsolete when they join their new appointment. The reality is that they advise behind the scenes for a similiar renumeration paid to a blind trust in the Cayman Islands.

All that is needed is a law which sets a limit of, say 5 years, within which a person is not allowed to take up a job with any organisation with which they have worked closely or a direct competitor. They have this in France.
@cpn90723 жыл бұрын
I think 5 years is too long. 3 years perhaps more realistic for moves that are Public to Private, and I certainly cannot support private to private moves within competing companies. That should be managed more effectively through specific Employment contractual terms and should demur form a legislative approach.

The amount of times they were attempting to tell him to only make certain comments in private. So trying to hide behind closed doors as always. They got very defensive when he mentioned the PM. 49:11 stop outsourcing your IT to Crapita then. That would be a start. But oh no, you constantly allow people in charge to outsource. You'll always get a better service and more cost effective service keeping IT in house. It's a false saving outsourcing. And that is the issue. You'll get someone in power, who, to make a name for themselves, outsources the IT contract so they can state "I saved the company/government this much this year" then quickly leaves for a new role. Before it's discovered that in the long run, it will cost a massive amount more than running in house.

Top civil service chaps all went to Oxford or Cambridge. In spite of the senior staff being quite well paid, they feel peer pressure from their college chums who earned squillions in the private sector. Worse, their nagging wives will pile on further pressure. So of course we'll look the other way and let them take so called career breaks to work in banks and make proper money. And let them take highly paid consultancy or non exec jobs after retirement. Solution: pay the civil service similar salaries to the private sector and enforce strict rules against lobbying and what the Japanese call 'amakudare' (ascent to heaven) jobs at the end of your civil service career
