I've always thought that this was Mean Gene's fault. Patera says "But I’m so humiliated right now I’m afraid to turn my back. I don’t want the people to see what happened to me." and then Gene makes a joke by taking him literally and looking at his back, which makes the cameraman laugh and cracks up Gene, and then Patera can't concentrate and it all goes downhill...so very, very far downhill... Patera never cut a very good promo, but Gene's antics didn't help.
