Hello IB English guys! If I wanted to practice a speech analysis for my paper 1 coming up in May, can I choose Tryst with Destiny by Jawaharlal Nehru? he gave it right after India became an independent country and its use of diction is one thing I noticed about it. I wanted to ask if that would be a good idea? you know, from a literary perspective? wanted to ask an English teacher's opinion.

Hi. We feature talks of Bill Gates to satisfy the BOW requirements. However, the main purpose of the unit is to develop public speaking skills. The unit culminates in each student writing and delivering a TED Talk to the class. Each class selects a winner, and then we have a Ted Talk community event with the winning speakers. It’s pretty great!

Hi guys!! I’m moving to Lang and Lit and am still trying to understand. Are speeches non-literary? If a student did Douglass and the soeeches of, say, Obama, would this be a literary and non literary pair?

This is tricky. Speeches are NON-Literary UNLESS the speaker is listed on the PRL (Martin Luther King Jr. for example). Talk directly to your teacher regarding this. I would not recommend two speeches for your IO. That is not the aim. Find different text types that show the GI. Again, clarify with your teacher before you proceed and good luck!

What if I’m the teacher? LOL! I have done some digging and understand that those in the grey area can be non literary if the author isn’t on the PRL. I’m good now. Thank you!
