Ibn Taymiyya was one of the most influential Muslim polymaths ever. He was known for his critical stance towards Greek philosophy and its intrusion into Islamic theology, for his call for revelation-based reform, and for refutation of some popular and misleading religious concepts that prevented many Muslims in his time from fighting against the Mongol invasion.
All of which earned him many enemies and led to his imprisonment multiple times until he died in prison 1328 CE / 728 AH.
His student Ibn al-Qayyim says about this poem:
"Towards the end of his life, he sent me a message about some fundamental rules in Tafsir (interpretation of the Quran), and on the back, he wrote to me those verses which he composed:..."
