Hey Jack. I've replaced many 'grain-o-wheat' bulbs with LED's in the past. As you said, LED's do not have the same luminance characteristics as a light bulb so they don't always work as well as they should. I'm not sure if the clear super bright LED's would work any better in this case, but they might. Will be interesting to see well the new bulbs work out. :)

Just a quick tip... to get led's to shine sideways you file the top down or if you are careful, snip the top with side cutters.

Really? I've heard of sanding for diffusion, OK, Ill experiment next radio I need to do this too...I have several more that needs lights replaced. Thank you for the tips, I appreciate it! ~Jack, VEG

@@VintageElectronicsGeek No problem Jack, its just a little thing that I picked up a few years back. I know you can get side firing led's but they cost more and are usually only in white. Just get one against a bit of paper and see if the effect is what you need. Happy New Year and all the best.

Good video. I think the original bulb looked orange-ish because it was under-volted to make it last longer. Most LCDs with incandescent backlight kind of look like that.

@@VintageElectronicsGeek Yes Jack, happy new year by the way also have you considered sanding down the led slightly to make it opaque so the light gets scattered a little?

howz about 6 connected in a series loop. or howz about using fiber optic lines to the holes from a central LED?

Howdy Dennis, long time! Never got into trains....I remember when I was a little boy, one year my dad bought me a train set....needless to say...dad played with it first and for a long time that day....he was having fun...and that's all that matters! :) Thanks for the 411 on the bulb. ~Jack, VEG
