The next Rolex I want is the Polar Explorer II. It is the perfect compliment to the other Rolexes in my collection. I've a vintage 1977 Submariner, a 2020 SS 36mm Blue Datejust on a Jubilee with a White Gold Fluted Bezel and a 2022 Z-Blue Milgauss. The selling points for the Polar Explorer II are dial size, date complication, GMT complication and the white dial. Oh, and it's also a work of art.
@xmuninuАй бұрын
You're so right about not chasing the hyped 'grail' models. I had lusted for the black dial Ceramic Daytona for years, and when I finally bagged one at a reasonable price I just didn't enjoy wearing it. While it has the perfect case size and sits beautifully on the wrist, I found it practically impossible to read the time in most lighting situations (and I have 20/20 vision) and, lets face it, who uses a Daytona to time things nowadays? I decided to sell it but was searching for a replacement Rolex with the same elegant, sleek case design and I ended up with a blue dial Yacht Master 40. The YM 40 in my opinion is so much better than the Daytona and seems to be overlooked for some strange reason. It's basically a Daytona case without the pushers and a much more user-friendly dial. I loved the YM 40 so much that I eventually added the older Platinum dial version as well as the newer Rhodium dial to my collection and have no regrets.

Happy to see the Air King featured :) As a recent owner, I can confirm that the waiting time has decreased significantly; where I'm from, it took a little over two weeks for the AD to call me after I've shared my interest. I am of course biased, but I don't have any issues with its 40mm size whatsoever; I think it sits perfectly on the wrist. Now, you caught my attention with the black Explorer 2... :)) Great video, as always! Cheers!

We should be going for these models, shame they all have something wrong with them. Air king is hideous, explorer ii is obese sized. For me yachtmaster bezel looks like a cheap tag heuer. I always wanted an Explorer, never an Explorer II. Then I was offered a black dial Explorer II, tried it on. That's when I became an Explorer II fan. Despite being over my maximum preferred 39mm, it looks great. It sits well, and despite being a little oversized for my wrist, it doesn't overtake it thanks to the black dial.

I would love to get an Explorer or Explorer II, but damnit, I wish they’d put the Glidelock clasp on all professional models. Why this hasn’t been done is beyond me.
@ID-GuyАй бұрын
It is frustrating... and the fact that they've largely removed the flip out "divers extension" on models like the SD43, pieces that are genuinely made to be worn over dive suits. It would be excellent if they ever committed to glidelock more fully. I could be wrong but they might've done something recently with their Oysterflex's? 🥃

@kramdog3000Ай бұрын
@@ID-Guy I do think removing the diver’s extension is dumb, but not super important to divers. I think they typically prefer a rubber strap to really cinch that puppy down. The deeper you go, the more your wrist gets smaller due to pressure. Yes, the Oysterflex bracelets are all Glidelock from what I’ve read on the Rolex website. That shows they know people want it. As a previous Explorer 1 owner, I'll say why I sold it: it's because it doesn't have any fidgetability. It's also the reason why I tried to love a white and then black Explorer 2: no fidgetability. It's hard to spend so much on a watch that you can't meaningfully play with when you need a 5m break. I own many divers, chronographs and GMT watches with rotating bezels - all of these I can fidget with during the day and it's really nice. More importantly, I can interact with the time, so the watch isn't just presenting a static view of the time, one in which I can't interact with. In case you're wondering, I've owned in the past several GMT watches that didn't have rotating bezels and I sold them but not really understanding why I couldn't gel with them. But now I know: you can't use a jumping hour hand unless you're actually travelling so there's no real interaction with the watch outside of travelling, which make them dull. The addition of a rotating bezel on the other hand instantly allows the owner to interact with time in a meaningful way, even outside of travelling.

That's Rolex marketing for you - your quote: "I think it's criminal that the 36 Explorer can be bought for less than retail on the second hand market". Personally I think the historical scarcity marketing ploy used by Rolex and ADs, plus the way Rolex ADs treated you up until now, was more noteworthy as criminal 😊. Personally I'm done with Rolex now. I own a couple of Rolexes (Datejust and Sub) but sold my GMT Master II and won't buy another (any model). Despite my obvious previous interest in the brand, the AD experience has left quite a bitter taste and is all I associate the brand with now.
@oysterman962Ай бұрын
Rolex is just a wholesale manufacturer. It has never sold a watch to the public consumer. All sales are done via third party AD. Although Rolex should take more responsibility with distribution, it's the ADs buying up all the stock and reselling the popular models through consignment at grey dealers. As an analogy, think that if Rolex was in the business of building new houses, and each house was sold through a developer or real estate agent who obviously manipulate the price for the end consumer. That's why most countries now have a cost of living crisis.
@followme823823 күн бұрын
I think all used watches should cost less than the retail price…’certified pre-owned’, ‘grey market’, whatever - it’s all used. Sure, some ultra special rare pieces should sell at a premium, but not artificially scarce watches.

And 6:46 - I do agree about the Air-King. I also bought this from the local AD window just 3 months ago. It’s my new daily due to the brushed steel and I call it my ‘London watch’ because I can wear it in London without it being recognised (thankfully I live outside of London so can wear my gold pieces in full view in my local city without any issues).

Great episode. I sold my ceramic Sub but kept my 124270 - the 36mm Explorer is an iconic Rolex tool watch that is all day comfortable and equally at home climbing a mountain or with a suit and tie. The perfect GADA watch( if one is comfortable with its size - I prefer 36mm Rolex watches). I recently tried on a steel YM at my AD and found it to be far more comfortable to wear than a ceramic Sub (and its organic case shape is much more pleasing visually). Cheers!

It's the first watch in many years that had me question why I needed some other watches in my collection. It's worn almost daily and doesn't shout luxury. I love it. I wore it to the office today an absolutely no one batted an eyelid that it was a Rolex and that is exactly the response that I wanted. It did stand out just a little as it isn't an Apple watch that so many wear these days at the office and that's totally fine. I guess maybe in the future the once bland and boring watch just might get noticed for being different to the plethora of smartwatches.

A gmt master 2 would be great, and I also am with those that want the explorer 2 back down to a 40. But with a DJ and an exp36, less is more with these two pieces.

The blue dial Yacht Master is to me definitely a grail watch.

I prefer the 2-tone vintage pieces more than the new blingy ones. Great video as always

I have initiated negotiations at the AD for a Yachtmaster 40 with a blue dial. Been looking at this one for years. I’m an existing customer. I’m happy to pay retail. My non Rolex AD has one used, but the bought it at the wrong time and is now way over retail. Even with a discount, I told them they’ll never sell it. Having just been to the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms launch event /lunch for the 42mm, I have to say that it doesn’t feel as big as my Explorer II.

I recently was offered a watch by a traveller in an Ale house in Wrexham. I was tempted but declined as it looked used.

I picked up a 116900 AK a few months before I turned 40 and kept it in the safe until that day. I know it’s an oddball, but I like it, the colors on the dial are pretty cool….and I have a pair of air max 90s that match 🤪 the hype pieces are cool, but it’s more fun to like what you like and who cares if it’s the IG cool kid!

Yep, gonna go for Explorer II & Airking from my AD down the road. Waiting for my GMT Master II first.

I have an Explorer II with the Polar Dial. Great watch. I got it from my AD. I had no history and had to wait two years, but it was worth it.

I love my Polar Explorer II as it is an awesome travel watch on a rubber B. I think its one of the most underrated model. Great video brother 👍🏽

Next to your datejust, that polar of yours is such a killer piece man... If I remember you always rock it on a strap 😉 I sincerely hope the snow isn't hitting you yet brother... the Highlands are about to take a knocking (of course I'm right on the boarder) 🥃

Hoping for a smaller Explorer II to be released in the future. Love the black dial and contrasting orange 24h hand.

I feel like I have a "budget" Rolex collection - Bluesy and Explorer 40. 😛This is a great review for the puppies in the kennel waiting for a new home. And you gave me some nice reasons to add an Explorer II - I love that it looks nothing like the Explorer 36/40, and yet it is a true hidden gem in the line up. And you describe the Air King so wonderfully well - it is that somewhat flop eared, tongue hanging out Rolex puppy, cute even though a bit, well, not so cute. 😄

I picked up a black dial Exp II earlier in the year. I was a bit on the fence, especially the black dial variant, but I'm loving it! On wrist as I write this. Its already been out travelling the world with me! The white dial is the more hype piece, but I'm actually glad I chose the black. I guess AD prices here in Canada are a bit less given that even at retail, it was not under market price. I don't think I would choose it as my one and done Rolex, but as part of a collection, outstanding.

I need YM40 on jubilee.

Personally I haven't really thought of Rolex based on the prices. I think the black dial explorer 2 would be the one for me, however, I feel I can get 2 tudor's for the price of one Rolex and be even more happy.

And that's the big one to think about. Adding a Tudor and a Zenith for example instead of one Rolex... it's not exactly a tough decision 😉🥃
@xpusostomosАй бұрын
You could get 10 Steinhardts too, and get ceramic bezels. That you would pay Tudor money for an aluminium insert in 2024 seems insane to me.

Great video as always! This is always the part of the lineup I play in. Relatively well priced and easy to get. Explorer and Explorer II are the best watches Rolex makes period. Love that you can actually get them! I own both and love them.

This is a good sign of a return toward a more normal market. Hopefully it continues as the Rolex benchmark impacts all other watches. In this list, I would go Explorer II or for the rhodium variant of the Yacht Master for sure.

Finally pulled the trigger on the grail, the 16570 Polar, after years of watching the charts. I'm as perplexed as you are about the price plummet, but I'll take it 🥃

Great video! I've been "on the list" for an Explorer II with the AD where I got my Explorer I for a while now, I guess I'll call them back and check in.
