For the past couple years, the Greater Idaho Movement has gained a lot of momentum. Its goal is to convince both the Oregon and Idaho state legislatures, and then the United States Congress, to redraw the boundary between Oregon and Idaho. The goal is to take at least 15 mostly rural, conservative-leaning counties in Eastern Oregon and have them become part of Idaho.

@mikeymikey4186 probably not by much, because the majority of the population centers in Oregon are in the cities in the west. While yes, Idaho would get bigger, have more people and gain more influence, most of that is still empty land This isn't necessarily an endorsement of the policy, because I think they're wrong for why they want to join Idaho, for the same reason why I don't think upstate New York should separate from NYC, or why NoCal shouldn't separate from the rest of California. I love the thought of someone thinking their political beliefs are enough of a reason to re-draw their state borders. It’s like we live in the 30’s again.
@bilson7523
@bilson7523 Күн бұрын
The problem is the democratic cities hold a super majority, so it's not that this is just a political difference, it's a representation issue. There are like 400k people on that side of the state, and they don't get any real traction within the state government. We're talking they've gone years (plural) without being able to get legislation through, meaning those delegates are beholden to the west side of the state, but the opposite isn't true, and this has been an issue since the early-90s. And that's a core piece of the issue, in any form of representative governance, it's reasonable to expect your representatives to have some agency to push through your issues, but because there is both a political, geographic, and population disconnect, the east side of Oregon effectively doesn't have a voice. Washington, California, and Virginia are going through similar issues.
@booooocaj
@booooocaj 21 сағат бұрын
@@bilson7523 yeah read up more about the issue, in this context it makes a bit more sense. I still think overall it’s not the best idea to have state borders redrawn over political representation but what else can you do if no one represents you in your state?

You CLEARY haven't read much about the history of this country then. West Virginia was literally a state that drew its lines from Virginia because they didn't want slavery. Many boundaries are redrawn due to politics.

@@booooocaj I'm not defending this idea perse. I'm saying just this is a natural consequence of the situation. Kinda like a hand on a hot stove, I don't want it to hurt, but it's going to. As I mentioned in another thread, this likely will be DOA because of the native reservations. That's a hefty tax debt that needs to move states, and Oregon would lose those kick-backs from the feds. Some people will claim the electoral votes will be the blocker, but I honestly don't think that's gonna move the needle. We're talking one vote, maybe. Those federal tax programs for the reservations though? That's 🤑.

It would also open up the possibility for people to just move across the state line and then vote away chunks of that state over to their home state. @@RainedOnParadeChild sacrifice took place in Carthage a message was delivered to Nineveh and the totality of a 2024 eclipse passed through towns named Nineveh and a town named Rapture. In 2017 it was towns named Salem. Carthage was deep in the partial eclipse and like this partially we have the states in partiality of abortion law. States view weeks as a way to determine life and its right to life. They view two bodies as one and take the mothers will over the fetus. We have technology now for fetus to be grown in synthesized womb. Signs in the sky.. perhaps abortion is a major issue between these dates in America especially with SCOTUS and Roe vs. Wade. I live in one of the towns where this “Greater Idaho Movement” is being talked about. I will repeat what my friend who works for our city told me: It’s never going to happen, these counties are not bringing in industry, and the cost would be too expensive for Idaho to pay. Most of these older folks are upset during election season, their voice is not being heard/ignored. Which is totally understandable, but I am sure that a good majority is on some level of Oregon assistance program for either insurance or maybe food. I don’t know Idaho’s assistance program, but it probably is not like Oregon’s.

The problem with this is that Oregon literally gains nothing out of this except lost tax revenue and lost Congressional seats. There’s no way the Oregon state legislature would agree to this. @@jakecarpenter397 It’s not simply a matter of self-interest that is the concern here. Over half the state leaving would inevitably harm Oregon residents. It’s also wrong to set a precedence of state borders being drawn based on political leaning. I understand Oregon conservatives feel they aren’t being represented. However, you could also say the same of predominantly liberal cities in conservative states. Take Texas for example, you think it’d make sense for Austin, Houston, and Dallas to become their own independent city-states simply because those cities lean left while the rest of the state leans right? Democracy doesn’t mean we can get whatever we want if we have enough votes. Boundaries have to be set in order to maintain a functional, safe, and prosperous nation.
@jakecarpenter397
@jakecarpenter397 Жыл бұрын
@Justin B That's... precisely the definition of democracy. In its simplest meaning, enough votes lead to whatever outcome you want. It's why the founders avoided implementing democracy in its pure form. Anyway, it is entirely self-interest on the part of the Oregon government. They've demonstrated a consistent willingness to damage their constituents as long as it means they keep getting kickbacks and maintain their power. Also, of course, the western half would be against it. Their food is going to get more expensive, but why should that be the problem of the disenfranchised? If we can change nothing else about our system, then by all means, let's at least maintain the consent of the governed. It's the most important thing, and if that means Huston and Austin are city states, then sure, why not? It's a hell of a lot better than telling folks who feel powerless to just deal with it.

Gerrymandering is when you take like 3 possible offices and instead of letting the districts for those 3 offices be random or geographic you draw them in funny shapes so you guarantee 2 of the 3 offices get filled by your party. (despite maybe only 51% of voters being in your party) So you get 66% of the power with only 51% of the vote. This is really the opposite. This is taking a deep red state and adding some red from a deep blue state. This is anti gerrymandering. This is making a deep red state redder and a deep blue state bluer.

No. The citizens of the state, not the government of the state, are making a decision to secede from the dysfunctional state in which they now reside. Highly unlikely to happen as things currently stand: -Proportional Representation means that the Oregon state legislature will continue to be controlled by the coastal counties and their inland satellite counties, who'll be damned if they're going to allow any of their increasing share of proportionally guaranteed electoral votes to be flipped toward a solidly rural state. -Even if this somehow got through both state legislatures, it would then come down to who controls Congress when the bill arrives. The only way I could see that measure passing is if a Conservative Populist coalition enjoys a cozy majority in both houses in addition to having to actually agree on the issue itself. Not very likely for a slew of reasons.

That's hard to say. Does Boise provide enough to cover the cost of these rural areas, who could never dream of being self-reliant in terms of economic need? HIGHLY doubtful.

Intolerable political differences between people residing in different large geographic areas isn't a good enough reason to look at redrawing borders? Then what the heck is a good reason?
@MattMcConaha
@MattMcConaha Жыл бұрын
@@Arbidarb there aren't any good reasons I can think of. I mean, wars and stuff can cause it, but those aren't "good reasons" as much as they are "strong reasons." If you want to rearrange borders for any reason, it's a pretty big deal. If you want to rearrange the borders of a US state by THAT MUCH, it is a giant deal. A monumental deal. A monumental deal which ultimately doesn't even fix the fact that there will continue to be a political divide between the urban and rural parts of both Idaho and Oregon. And every other state. So what exactly is it solving? This is just how democracy works, no matter how small you make a population, or where you move the borders to, there will always be people who have political disagreements. The point of a democracy is to have people vote to decide which things happen based on majority consensus, not total consensus. The country has its own consensus in one direction. Each state has its own consensus in another direction. Each county has its own consensus in another direction. Each town has its own consensus in another direction. And on each level the people get to vote and make decisions which are relevant on that level. It's not necessarily an ideal system, it doesn't work out perfectly for everyone, but it's the system this country is built on. I think it's reasonable to say that the system is bad and that it shouldn't be used, but I think the idea of wanting to move borders around in in attempt for one side to get their way is just antithetical to the whole system.
@Arbidarb
@Arbidarb Жыл бұрын
@Matt McConaha I'm not saying it isn't significant (historically speaking), but it isn't monumental in any other way than it is rare. Usually you see revolutions or secessions in situations like this. Instead we're looking at a change that wouldn't fundamentally change the country, with an effect on Oregon would be minimal. And we aren't talking about an urban versus rural split. We are taking about an East versus West split. Western Oregon is by no means urban, and yet they still align with the "urban" political sentiment. Given the increasing political tension these days, it seems more prudent to change borders in order to allow people to govern themselves than to dismiss those people's problems because they're a minority. Tyranny of the majority is a real thing, and it can cause some significant harm. Borders don't stay static forever anyways.

It is increasingly a very apt comparison because the amount of SA inflicted on everyone is significantly higher than any form of homicide and yet we're not allowed to talk about this proliferation. In either case, I'm talking about that too, because his point boils down to " _You_ aren't going to hurt people but other people _might_ so I'm going to punish you for it." Gerrymandering is when those few inhabitants of easten Oregon get heightened representation and have a greater impact on the overall votes within the state. @Prey R have you actually read that report, or are you just repeating talking points from the media you follow? If you dig into that report, there are a ton of contradictory assumptions made. The report simultaneously predicts that the GDP of the areas adopted would grow by about 2% because we would be getting rid of a ton of taxes, but then in that same report, they argue that these areas wouldn't be a net tax burden on the state (only) if we were to adopt many of the same taxes as Oregon and apply them to the adopted counties. Even this report published by the Claremont Institute that YOU brought up says that these counties are basically subsidized to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year by western Oregon, and the only way for them to make the accounting work to make these adopted counties not have to be subsidized by the rest of Idaho would be to impose the same kinds of taxes that these counties are trying to escape.
@parkerfitzen3609
@parkerfitzen3609 Жыл бұрын
@Prey R yes... Did you read my comment? Because I explicitly said that we had different taxes and that the report acknowledged that we'd have to implement some of those Oregon taxes that we don't have for those counties (like a weight-mile tax for commercial vehicles over 26,0000 lbs) to prevent those counties from becoming a net tax liability for the state.
