Filling Holes 101. What spackle or filler should you use?

With so many options of filler to fill holes in walls and nail holes, what is the best filler out there. The 3 options I use to fill so I get professional results with little work. Tips from The Idaho Painter. Crawfords spackle, Bondo Glazing putty, and wood epoxy are three fillers you should use. Tips from the Pro's. I'm a new subscriber... I'm in the process of starting my own interior painting business... I absolutely love your channel. I commend you on the scripture posted in the background. I worked for years in a high-end cabinet shop, on the side, for friends of the family in the finishing department since i was 18yrs old. I have done drywall and paint for years, through remodeling, and homeowners insurance jobs, mold remediation etc. I have years of experience working with customers inside their homes. Im 47yrs old and live in a small town in Northeastern Kentucky, that doesn't have the economic growth of surrounding cities such as Lexington, or Louisville. The gap for disposable income is very polar. Im branding my business and marketing towards interior only, refinishing and repairing walls, ceilings. trim etc. Skimming out, feathering and paint. I'm limited to startup capital, but know some good local contractors, and their going to throw me a fee jobs they don't have time for. I'll be able to do some before and after pics. For the website. I'm working in logo, web page, and advertisement, while pursuing license, and insurance over the next 2 weeks....your videos and information are greatly appreciated!!

Even with the patch and prime I’ve found you still need two layers over it, especially with an enamel based paint. I use lightweight Red Devil patch and prime and will spot prime it anyway if I only have one topcoat to go over it. Thanks for the advice about the glazing putty, I have had some issues with heavy weight spackling on pre primed materials in that you can see the edge of the holes that are being filled. Hoping this will help to fully eliminate that :)

Crawfords Spackling Paste is what all the journeymen I work under use.

Add a little water to the patch and paint, mix it up. And it should work, and go back to it's creamy form.

Hi, I've been a fan ever since I watched your video 'How to Stain a Deck.' I have a question regarding metal bullnose corners from the 90's. Over the years the outer corners have been chipped, scraped and dented from furniture being moved, kids hoverboards/ skate boards, bikes and trikes exposing metal. Before I paint I need to smooth patch these out to be flush with the layer of paint I'm laying down.. Which product would you recommend that bonds to metal? Thank you. so much.

Hey there, professional painter here. I would recommend you spray some bonding primer on the metal, then go over it with any lightweight spackling if the areas are small and some joint compound if the areas are large. Maybe 2-3 coats wherever needed.

I also would recommend priming the metal first with a bonding primer, and using that glazing putty or bondo for the repairs. There's a reason they use it on automotive repairs, it will be a rock hard, rock solid patch. It's not too bad to work with either, just try to pull it nice and tight.

I’m redoing all of the trim in my house. I’m using pre primed finger jointed wood. I’m looking for something that I don’t have to prime. I have a million nail holes. Would I have to prime Elmers white wood filler if I’m painting all the trim white? Ty

@@chriscreiger2290 Ty. I was thinking of using Dyna Patch Pro because I’ve read a lot of great reviews on it. I wasn’t sure if I would need to prime that being it’s white and I’m using white paint. It’s not easy to find in USA because it’s a Canadian product, but I found a place. My next choice if I couldn’t find it or if I had to prime it was to use Elmers white wood filler. What do you think?

Any tips on fixing a reoccurring hairline crack in a plasterboard ceiling?

Cut a huge groove out along the crack. Make sure the ceiling is secured and add reinforcing screws around the affected area to snug it all up nice and tight. Prefil the groove with durabond if you feel comfortable working with it(it'll dry as hard as concrete, so do NOT leave anything thinking it can be sanded away, pull it as tight as possible, if anything leave small voids instead of lumps) then put mesh tape over it and use 45min or 20min easysand hotmud to float out the repair, completely embedding the mesh tape of course. This is gonna be your best 'patch'. Other options are to put drywall right over the ceiling, or obviously rip it all off and then put up fresh drywall. If it's completely messed up this would be the proper fix.
