I'm a mechanical engineer stuck wondering why your elastic bands aren't firing as fast as you'd expect in this video and your previous, and I think the main problem is the stiffness of the materials. To get high speeds you need very high stiffness with some flexibility. A traditional ballista acheives this as wood is very stiff, but still quite flexible under bending, so you can store a lot of energy in the wood by bending it a small amount, and because of it's high stiffness it releases all of that energy quickly over a short distance. The elastic bands are much less stiff, so they have to be stretched much more to store a comparable amount of energy, and when they release it they do so over a much greater distance, and the speed they can relax limits the speed you can fire your projectile. This is useful for slingshots as you can apply a lower force over a larger distance to add lots of energy, but is more challenging to achieve at large scales as the elastic cables become quite heavy. That's why fibreglass composites are popular materials for bows, they are extremely stiff and have very high tensile strength, allowing large amounts of elastic potential to be stored and released quickly.

How they couldve improved it is by adding 2 cams for the elastics to run across, to simulate that energy storage (its also more efficient energy storage as its a pulley system) this is how all modern bows and xbows work and for very good reason, you can get the speed and power of a 300lbs war bow for like 60 lbs on a compound bow or xbow.

Now this is promising. Perhaps a few tips from some one who built stuff like this before..? For the rubber use innerhoses for car or truck tires, much more power. Cut them in 3cm stripes and have 4-6 of them. Make a v-shaped form of the plastic from kitchen cuttingboards for your arrow to travel in (polish them shiny with carwax). And lastly, melt cola cans and cast arrowheads in aluminium (special sand to make molds in are available at hardwarestores) and make the shaft in bambuu, pine or some other wood (weight of the head gets it were it needs to go, the shaft just keeps the trajectory straight) fins of paper or plastic. These improvements would give you a projectile that goes thru a housewall in 50meters. I hope this gives you a new perspective..

There's a lot of ingenuity to be found in old pre-electronic measuring techniques! For example, if you're trying to measure the speed of a projectile without a chronograph you could: 1. Create two large circles made of a penetrable material, and mount them to an axle the same way you would with any normal pair of wheels. 2. Rotate the axle at a constant speed. 3. Launch the projectile parallel to the axle so that it passes through both circles. 4. Measure the difference in the position of the holes from the first to the second circle. 5. Use that measurement, along with the distance between the circles, and the speed at which they were rotating to calculate the speed.

So, useful bit of lore about these suckers, part of the reason you were having difficulty hitting things is that the fletching keeps the projectiles on course and stabilizes them. Yeah, you lose some range/power for it, but the consistency in where the shots land and having a more nose-on approach tends to make up for it. Though you'll probably want to use something better than generic duct tape for it next time.
@goShinigami11 ай бұрын
In a very short and superficial google search I couldn't really confirm or deny that ballista bolts in general, as broad as that descreption goes, did have fletching. I'd assume that some iterations would have similar fletching to crossbow bolts, however I did see some illustrations and descriptions that would make me think that they did not always have fletching on ballista bolts.
@moreproblematic11 ай бұрын
Even with his duct tape fletching, the projectiles just don't seem to be weighted very well as they all go nose up with any time in the air, so they end up just falling at an angle and not producing great results. Hence needing to be very close just to score a penetrating hit
@BengalGecko11 ай бұрын
6:13 Okay but if you were firing the bolt at 22m/s and it weighed 2kg then it was carrying 484J of energy. The projectile of a standard .22 caliber handgun carry’s about 162J of energy. Your ballista at that point had about 3x more energy in its projectile than a .22 handgun, meaning it was 3x more powerful than your average .22

@BoarhideGaming11 ай бұрын
@@whtxdxu7331 Yeah. Rolling a head sized boulder down a hill will probably carry similar energy to a .50 BMG, but I'm pretty sure it's not going straight through an engine block. Kinectic Energy is = 1/2 m*v^2^, meaning it's proportional to the object's mass and to the square of velocity. So sure, speed is very important, but a heavy enough object won't need to be fast to annihilate stuff
@BengalGecko11 ай бұрын
@@VHSo_o The real problem is the projectile he's using sucks. It's clearly producing a lot of drag. If he improved the projectile design (to the point where it can actually maintain its orientation parallel to its trajectory) it would perform a lot better at distance than it did.

it does look like it's faster than 38 m/s and yes when the tip enters the chronograph the bolt is still accelerating. another thing to factor in is that if the chronograph determines the speed by measuring the time between the bolt going in and coming out then that's definitely a problem since the bolt is long so it takes more time to count as "coming out" than if it was short.

If you ever come back to this idea or want to redo this idea, I think you might want to try attaching the bowstring to an actual bow. You see a lot of the force from a bow actually comes from stretching the front part of the bow backwards and the wood snapping back forwards to launch the arrow. Since you attached the bowstring to the same place, the extra elasticity that the bow normally has isn’t there
@Meevious11 ай бұрын
Normally the string is inelastic, but here it's elastic, so this xbox already has the elasticity component and can increase the power by simply scaling it up - adding more rubber bands or increasing the size of the rubber bands. It actually needs to be stiffer (without being more brittle), not more elastic, because the goal is to have it return to its untensed state as quickly as possible. Making it more elastic would increase the distance that it has to travel to get to that state.

Ididathing I actually had to do in depth research into the functionality of Roman ballistas, and there's a second element that would get them up to that 90m/s muzzle velocity. You're just using the tension in the bands to accelerate the bolt, but were those bands attached to a bow like arm, and that arm then affixed to two tension springs, which is just tightly wound sinew, you would essentially double your muzzle velocity. Roman Ballistas were also twice as tall as you in some cases, so don't feel bad lol.
