The NHL has had some ridiculous divisional alignment in it's history. The 80-81 season is a prime example. LA was in the same division as Montreal, Hartford, Pittsburgh and Detroit. In the same year Calgary was in the same division as the Rangers, Islanders, Caps, and Flyers. And then there was the 21 team league where 16 teams made the playoffs. Not quite as bad as the QMJHL (every team makes the playoffs) but bad enough.
