+HerbieCN Tom Hardy is at the perfect stage in his career for it and would really fit. I think people are building the Idris thing up too much and turning the thing into some kind of James Bond race war which is ridiculous. If Idris plays it at this point then theres going to be a far bigger deal made of it than of his acting ability which would be a shame. However I think Tom Hardy is a much stronger actor and could bring some really different flavour to the role while they also go with whart seems a bit of a little sub plot of Craig's where Bond is an adopted name and him beginning to age. I'm not sure Idris will play Bond for many films.

I'd be up for Hardy too but I think it would be good for varieties sake to cast Elba, we need to kick past race and encourage diversity in casting. Of course consider whether the actors(tress) are right for the part, but also put aside race/skin colour.

HerbieCN Yeh I do agree somewhat with the argument of putting race and things aside and encouraging more diversity in casting. Theres the whole argument of having a black spiderman which Im kind of siding with Stan Lee on in that the character was created in a certain way and it would be better to just write more top quality stories where the protagonists are more culturally diverse rather than completely changing the background and timeline of a story already told. So in a way its down to the writers and studios to start doing that more than it is down to casting differently for the sake of making a statement about cultural diversity. With that said, for James Bond's story, changing casting could fit in the story in a way because of the idea that it is a name given to the person along with the code 007. I just worry that too much has been made of it and some people arent really wanting Elba in on the merit of acting alone and are overlooking that Tom Hardy is kind perfect for the role like he looks, sounds and acts like he was born to do it. What I do hope happens with this though, even if Elba doesnt become Bond is that the studios listen and start taking a bit more of a risk with their stories because Hollywood is just producing a lot of paint by numbers stories right now which have clearly been washed out by focus groups and polls and execs taking control out of the writers and directors hands. They insist on giving the audiences what they think we want because it sold before rather than realising people often want to be immersed in varied and meaningful stories that take you through different experiences. Thats alot of the real purpose in storytelling and film making and at this point there isnt enough of that. So I'm all for more diversity in bigger roles but they have to be careful that it is more for the sake of the story and quality of acting than just making a statement about colour.

Honestly, I love Idris but I'd rather see him as another MI6, 00 agent that rivals James Bond. Call him 009 or whatever but I'd like to have a black agent that is Bond's equal in every way who also fights for Queen and Country. Give him his own unique style and flair. Create a new and original character that fits in the Bond universe. Idris could also have a reoccurring role in future Bond films.

Ever considered that Idris Elba is actually a good actor? They're most probably looking at his acting skills than the colour of his skin. I've only seen him in a few things, but from what I've seen he coukd easily play the suave, well dressed and professional agent that Bond is supposed to be. Felix Read Believe it or not, it can and it should. Things like race, gender, height, weight, age, hair style, etc. are all things that make us unique and different from each other. A character will have a variation of those descriptors which make the character unique and who they are. To make Shaft white, would strip that character of the influence from the black cultural era of the 60's and 70's which he's representing. Similarly, making a ethnically-British character black, is severe misappropriation.
