Probably because 98-99% of these mobile "MMO" games aren't actually MMOs. The only "interaction" you have with all of the other players is via leaderboards - which are generally tied intrinsically to whatever P2W systems these games have. Hell, outside of the leaderboards and cash shop/gacha systems (which require a connection so the devs can make that sweet, sweet P2W whale cash), they pretty much don't even have any online components at all. The only aspect of an MMO that they actually have going for them is being "massive," primarily because they are free and on mobile devices.

Requiem, it is an MMO that I do love despite it being so shit lmao. During the reboot last year, I ran a community discord for the game, and it was active for a while, we had direct communication with the team over at WarpPortal and tried to do our best in order to make the game a better place for new players I gave up on the game shortly after new years 2023, because the Community Manager that was assigned to our discord just kept changing, they changed 4 times in the span of 3 or so months. They said they would improve the game, and add better balancing, remove the OP end-game stuff, fix formulas, new gameplay, new engine, all false-promises tbh. I was hoping for a better delivery, but a little over a year later, they clearly gone back to the p2w tactics and selling everything for real money. Game-breaking exploits were not fixed up until a few months after everything flooded the market, day 1 release had a massive exploit where you were able to complete one of the agent's quests an infinite amount of time, and level up to max level on day 1. As much as I love the game, I gave up on it because after trying so much to communicate with Warpportal and their crappy staff, it was apparent they didnt give two shits about the state of the game, and went from 500+ players a day, to around 30 players a day in the span of a few months. the game was more alive back in january 2022 compared to now.

The third MMO you played uses a very old, very "no longer used unless you want your game to fail" control scheme called "tank controls". They are, quite literally, how you control a military tracked vehicle ("tank"). If this is the first time you've met up with these controls, count yourself lucky. In the 90's they would positively ruin games with this control scheme.
@neoqwerty Жыл бұрын
To be fair in the 90's tank controls either happened because they were cinematographic angle games where the tank controls were better than constantly running back and forth on a screen transition, or first person games that were generally nice enough to make the enemies just as clunky and slow as you, usually with a dodge/backstep option with indecently long invulnerability frames. This looks clunky even for me, and I've played Illbleed's prequel Blue Stinger.

Honestly I would say try playing the GraalOnline family of games. They were originally a 2D online MMO similar to Zelda Link to the Past, they launched on mobile in 2008 making them much more accessible. Theres also different versions like one involving street gangsters and guns, and a futuristic server and an old west server. Its kind of a lot to take in but it makes for an interesting MMO case study

13:27 This rant probably summarizes why WoW gripped me for so many years. WASD strafing + right click mouse camera, hoo boy... that set the gold standard for MMO movement to this day. I had friends that tried to get me over to Guild Wars from WoW, and it was made much harder by GW not having the same level of control. Gameplay is king, and movement is a huge part of that. Look at the hit platformers...

I'd be interested in your opinion on IdleOn. It's a 2D MMORPG with Maplestory and Runescape influence. It is pretty fun and does some really unique things - like, you don't just have a single character, you have a whole clan of characters. Characters have skill levels a la runescape - some staples like mining and fishing but also some pretty unique ones like a weird tower-defense minigame. You get offline progress, which helps make the fact that you have multiple characters not a horrifying slog. There are a lot of interconnected systems and a lot of different ways to get buffs and upgrades. Good writing, great art, fun systems. It's not a flawless game but there's a lot to appreciate.

Honestly, your take at the end really changed my opinion of this whole video. I don't know if I will keep watching your channel tbh. Anyways, my bf and I actually played Stein World, and we did think it was charming, but it made me also unreasonably angry for reasons I couldn't place, and I could never bring myself to play it again. My bf continues to adore it however, and has mentioned a few times over the years "Hey, we should play Stein World again." And always I've just never been in the mood. The video perfectly articulates why HAHAHA! It's just, so disappointing on every front. I thought at first that I was the weird one though, because I've played BDO and something else before, and it was basically the same but with pixel dudes and of course all the problems with movement. The quest part seemed pretty accurate to the genre lol. Also, your music choices bring unbridled joy to my heart. This is my second video of yours, and you are still bringing out bangers. The Zelda music in particular is a favorite of mine, but AC and other honorable mentions make me very happy. Maybe even happy enough to forgive that weird thing you said at the end 👀
