It’s Mother’s Day week. In many churches, this is the largest Sunday of the year. So to prepare, our denominations made ads to let people know what to expect.

My family attended mostly Pres or Lutheran churches growing up, before we went to a Methodist church in middle school. Then, I got saved at a Pres church in high school, and now I’m an ordained minister at a Southern Baptist Church. God has a sense of humor

In (good) Lutheran and Anglican circles, you’d likely get 1) an announcement warmly acknowledging Mother’s Day before or after the service, 2) a collect for mothers in the prayers of the people, and 3) one paragraph in the sermon (likely hamfistedly and reluctantly) tying motherhood into the text that was being preached, but otherwise no deviation from the appointed lectionary or liturgy.

Confessional Lutheran here. Yep. Sounds about right. At first I was disappointed there was no LCMS or Catholic representation but after thinking of your comment it did make sense. No comment because there is nothing really to comment on. In our church it was in the bulletin and then in the announcements at the end of the service.

oh my you nailed that ...for 8 years , all I heard was how "you are a sinner-you need to repent-- well being 10 years old and being told how bad I am and to just put more money in the pass around offering plate,I decide enough and never went back. Best one yet! Having spent time in everyone of those styles of worship in the course of my life, you hit the nail on head. The Presbyterian pastor, after liturgy is over and before dismissal , will explains to congregation that even though the church doesn't follow the historic church ,or Hallmark, calendars, he will have an Elder come up and say a prayer for the mothers in the congregation, so the pastor won't get glares all week from his daughters, who the previous week tried to get him to explain why if they don't follow the church calendar but still have Easter and Christmas services, why not say something nice publicly about their mother? Understanding he trained his children well, he makes a compromise so lunch will be without strife.

Many years ago, a colleague who was also a Christian Methodist Episcopal minister explained that CME really stood for Christmas, Mothers Day, and Easter because those were the Sundays when you could count on a full house and might consider scheduling a second service.

I wish that were true of Presbyterians. But if you're at a PCA church in a small Southern town I guarantee that culture will Trump Bible or denomination or whatever else and there will be gifts for the mothers. I worked at one of those churches. On one issue (not a mother's day one), I asked "we do X but the Bible says do Y. Why don't we do Y?" And the complete answer I got was "that's not how we do things here."

That was funny. Does anyone else wish churches offered an alternative service on Mother's and Father's Days? We're right to honor them. But those services can be difficult for those of us whose parents are now in heaven. Ditto for those unable to become parents themselves. We can also add those with abusive parents, and those who had trouble with their own children. How would such a service go? One, acknowledge the day. Two, any mothers, or fathers, in the service will still get a nice gift. Three, the special singing and sermon will be about something else. Since this idea hasn't caught on yet, here's another suggestion. Don't make the entire service about the day. If things get too heavy, folks would have the option to leave. One part I do like is hearing the pastor's wife speak on Mother's Day. Even when I didn't attend in person, I still watched online. Who else would like to see some traditions stop? I'm talking about giving awards to the oldest, youngest, and mother with the most children in service. Those can be rather embarrassing.
