Both are plausible translations of the text, but it's unclear which is true and which is false, so then it comes down to beliefs. We call them homonyms in English, like "lie" means both go into a horizontal position and tell a falsehood. So for if you were to take the quote "man shall not lie with man as he does with woman" purely out of context, you could interpret it as either "bros before hoes" (men should not lie to each other even if they lie to women) or "no gay sex" (men should not lie next to in bed, implying having sex with, each other) ; I'm not saying that's what an English speaker would do, but if they were to translate to another language, and they didnt have someone telling them which interpretation is correct, they would have to make a choice between which they were going with. In this context, the ones who say what the right one is are also biased because well, they want it to be one way or the other (for both groups, as you said, activists and the church), so an independent translator would have to make the choice between the word (say it's "bondio" I just made that up idk if it means something) meaning man or boy

It's unidentified, not mistranslated. It uses an almost hapax legomenon for the word male (the passage is directed at men), but the only other connotation for that word would be it's other usage in relation to incest; and considering 18:22 succeeds after instructions specifically about incest, we can assume this did not have the connotation and indeed is just referring to men. So no, it still does mandate death for homosexual sex.
