If Hondas Are So Reliable Why Are All Of Mine Broken?!

Well...my 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 and my 2022 Honda Navi are both broken, just in time for riding season. One of them is an easy enough fix, but the other one...eh...I guess we'll find out.
My Hondas have always been reliable and good to me, so it sucks to see 2 of the 3 out of commission. Especially when a bike as new as the Rebel 1100 has an oil leak like that already.
Times like this show me how blessed we are to have so many "back up bikes" though! Stay tuned for updates on the diagnosis and fixes!

There seem to be lots of comments saying the same things, so I’ll address them here to make it easier for all of us- Yes, I mounted the exhaust myself. No, I didn’t use a torque wrench because the spec is 21lbs which felt easily eyeball-able. When I fix it, I’ll use a torque wrench to know if over/under tightening was the cause or not. User error definitely could’ve played a part in that, which I said in the video, however countless Navi’s have had issues at/around/involving the exhaust flange. Vance & Hines had to recall and redesign their Navi exhaust because so many broke at the flange. Whether this is a similar issue, but the Yoshi is just stronger so the stud broke instead of the flange, is yet to be determined. But obviously once I get the nuts spec’d *exactly* then we’ll know more when we see if the issue happens again. The stud is not the “reliability” I’m talking about in the title though. The reliability in question is the Rebel 1100’s leaks, which are becoming more and more common for the 2021 model year, and obviously have zero to do with user error and everything to do with the hiccups of a new model. I’m not saying that Hondas are unreliable, I’m just making a joke about the fact that Honda is one of the most reliable brands, yet two of mine are out of commission. I’m laughing through the pain, not genuinely saying something about Honda’s reliability lol I’ve owned ONLY Honda motorcycles (aside from my FZ07) and never had issues with ANY of them. Not the Grom, the other Navi, the VFR750, the VFR800, the two Rebel 300’s, or the two Rebel 500’s. This is not a question of Honda’s reliability. If I thought they were unreliable, my girlfriend and I wouldn’t collectively own 5 Honda motorcycles and 2 Honda cars. I’m simply documenting the issues that happened, like I always do on this channel. I still love the hell out of my Rebel 1100 and this doesn’t change that. I also don’t think this should deter anyone from buying one. It’s just a lesson learned for me to buy an extended warranty with any new model year bike, because there’s bound to be hiccups with a new model year ANYTHING. Hope that clarifies things.

Am I crazy to think when the exhaust was "broken" it sounded better? But that's probably because my main ride is a Fiat 500 Abarth that is designed to sound like that... Yeah, 21 ft/lb is decent to eyeball, at the same point, I've broken enough oil filter cans, a few wheel lugs, etc. in my cars that my set of torque wrenches get used all the friggin' time now. I don't think it was user error, but without using the torque wrench, I can't ever cross that off and feel better about it myself. I just wish they made torque wrenches in more sizes, cause getting them in my Fiat's tiny engine compartment is a pain. Last note: yes, first model year of any new model is known to be troublesome across any car / bike / etc. It's why I waited til 2017 to buy my Focus RS (and yet they still had the issue where they installed the head gaskets from the 2.3 mustang instead of the 2.3 RS and caused full engine rebuilds *facepalm*). The ONLY "safe" model years are literally like 4-5 years down the road, cause it means there's usually cars out there with 100-150k on the clock from that build, so even the hidden transmission and engine stuff will usually show up by then, and for Bikes it's less mileage, but around the same timeframe. It definitely isn't Honda built the stuff poorly, it's literally coincidence that multiple things happened at once, exacerbated by first model year growing pains. I had a crap-ton of issues in my Scion when I owned it (built by Toyota, even the engine had the toyota symbol instead of scion) because it was a first year model, and even the dealership mechanics said that even 1 year later, Toyota had figured all the stuff out and they hardly ever saw them come in (at the time I didn't have tools to work on it myself). /endrant

Use a torque wrench, don't pretend you can eyeball shit. It was over-torqued and it sheered off. It happens all the time in these instances.

Stop breaking your bikes bro lol (jk). I watched your install and everything was done correctly except you really should use a torque wrench. Not a knock but just advice from one guy to another. You can get away with not using one in some instances but never on smaller studs or bolts. In your defense though, I have had several people ask me about issues with certain exhaust systems on their Navis. Similar issues worth noting but not common. You can try a Hotlap pipe next. I got one of the first in U.S. and no issues yet.

i dont think It was over-torqued, i think one of the bolts was not tight enough, it started getting loose, and exchaust was just hanging on 1 bolt, those bumps you hit was to mutch for just 1 bolt, so it sheared off, as you kept going the already loose bolt continued to get looser and increasing the sound until it fell off completly

@@tomerik8785 You know it was improperly torqued. You know this because he did not use a torque wrench and could not verify it was tightened to manufacturer specifications. Literally everything else is bullshit fantasy; be it yours, mine, or whoever else wants to chime in. I’m gonna assume you mean the Navi lol but yea there’s a chance they were over torqued. In all honestly I didn’t use a torque wrench, but the spec is 21 lbs which feels eyeball-able. I’m for sure using a torque wrench for round two though so if it happens again I know that’s not the issue. Sooo many Navi’s have had cracks at/around/involving the exhaust flange at this point.

I think because the exhaust intake is positioned right under the entire bike. Lots of weight that can get knocked against those very slim and long exhaust pipes or the inlet from Yoshi isn’t machined quite right? Or the intake from Honda wasn’t machined correctly? Or the nuts were over torqued. 😂😂😢❤

When you installed that aftermarket exhaust system on the Navi did you make sure to not over-torque those bolts? I know it seems silly, but it's extremely common and very easy thing to do. So that added stress to the bolt would have weakened it, causing it to shear when you hit that bump.

Let's go right down the line here. Broken means MECHANICAL FAILURE, which means the bike(s) isn't running at all. So, the problem with the Navi isn't mechanical failure but the fact that you didn't Loctite the studs after you switched from an OEM exhaust to an aftermarket exhaust. That's called user error. That's not Honda's fault. Whenever you brake a factory torqued nut and bolt--especially from a vibrating component--if you don't Loctite that nut and bolt you're going to lose the nut. Next: You continued to ride your Navi knowing the remaining nut was loose. Continuous vibration not only caused the nut to work itself free, the combined weight of the exhaust and jarring from hitting bumps and potholes more than likely broke off the stud. Again, user error. Not Honda's fault. Oil leak. Again, not a mechanical failure but a simple leak. A simple oil leak is a nuisance not the end of the motorcycle's operation. I'll take fixing a simple leak for a couple dollars over having a blown head or a failed oil pump like a Harley, which causes a lot more internal damage. Slight weeping from a water pump in extreme cases my cause eventual water pump failure. Still a simple fix if you fix it early instead of ignoring it for hundreds or thousands of miles to the point of complete failure. Again, a tiny drop of weeping from a weep hole does not equate to having a broken bike. I've been riding Honda motorcycles from the time I bought a 1983 Nighthawk 550 to my current 2013 Shadow Phantom 750 among other bikes. I have completely neglected both bikes, wrecked them numerous times and clocked tens of thousands of cross country miles on both bikes. Neither bike so much as whimpered let alone broke or had mechanical failure. Be happy that the small problems you have with your Hondas are not only few and far between but also inexpensive and easily repairable.

It sucks to have breakdowns when the weather is starting to warm up. Hope everything goes well and don’t get too down on your bike. I have probably 50k miles on different motorcycle seats and no one makes rides as reliable as they used to. I remember when Honda was king if the air temp was 70 degrees and your carbs were clean. I hope anyone who reads this realizes that ABS is the only advancement in motorcycles that is important over the last 30 years. Don’t feel peer pressure to buy the new hot bike, just ride what you can afford and feel the wind and freedom. I bought a sportster new in 2001 and I’ve never cleaned the carb and I can go 15k miles on a set of tires. I’ve never bought a part that wasn’t routine maintenance.(knock on wood) I have a 1995 Kawi 1200 that will fly even compared to the new stuff and I will have 40 pounds of luggage on it. My point is simply that we should not reward Honda or any other company with sales if they don’t produce the quality that they used to. One day you will all realize that it was never the particular motorcycle that makes you feel so free, it’s the riding.

I've had the exhaust studs break on a Chinese motorcycle before, wouldn't expect it on a Honda. Usually caused by cheap studs being used, and the heat and vibration will cause the cheap components to come apart enough to break. Not totally uncommon on pit bikes and things like that. The 1100 though is real surprising. Especially considering that it's not really an all new engine or anything. But in my experience, motorcycles aren't held to the same quality as cars. I have a Moto Guzzi and I've had a few issues with it at only 5k miles. Pisses me off extra though, because they've basically been making the same engine for 100 years. I would be willing to bet the rebel just has a leaking seal on the water pump. Same thing happened on 2013 cbr250r's. Was bad enough many were fixed on warranty in the first year. Bad parts from a supplier I would guess.

@MrPage62

If you put an aftermarket exhaust on a bike, you can expect problems like that. Did you torque those nuts to spec? Did you use Loctite? Did you torque the flange nuts or the muffler bolts first? Did you use a torque wrench? It's also possible the Yoshimura flange is slightly misaligned. I doubt it was the bump -- it just found the issue for you. (Are you regretting that $500 exhaust purchase now?) With regards to the Rebel, I think you've got bigger problems than the water pump and side cover seal. I know it's at the dealer now, but did you pull the dipstick to check the oil condition? I hope it's under warranty...

Typically studs don't break like this (when nuts are tight). My suggestion is one nut got loose and that caused the other still tight stud to break when exhaust was hanging on just one stud. Then the other one continued to get looser and looser until you lost it.

@@LifeOfBurch was actually pretty easy, being that Im not quite a mechanic lol. Took me about 2hrs...Im hoping I can remember the names correctly...I pulled the case cover off on the side with the water pump. There are 2 seals, the oil seal and the "coolant seal". You have to replace both at the same time because they are on the same shaft. That's why sometimes it will be oil leaking and why it can just be coolant. I think your safe that they aren't mixing in the engine. I'll try to find the article that I found for my bike and send it to you on Instagram, I'm assuming it's pretty much the same thing because this was exactly my issue. I drove all last season with the small oil drip.

I wonder if your oil problem originated with running the bike at its limit or above its intended limit (if thats what you or someone did), not uncommon on some bikes when pushed. Maybe its just happenstance but you seem to have a lot of issues and Hondas for the numbers made just dont generally have them.

I hate to be "that guy", but these are the problems you start running into when modifying a vehicle. I'm not saying that we shouldn't modify our stuff, but you are literally changing how things were designed, which tends to cause problems ranging from small annoyances to functional flaws. Another factor you didn't mention with the Navi is that you also changed the rear shock out. You may have intentionally or unintentionally changed the ride height (including the angle of the brace for your exhaust) which would cause it to have more strain on the flange, resulting in the snapped bolt. It's also possible that it simply wasn't torqued properly, as others have noted. The Rebel issue sounds like a legitimate recall. It's surprising and unfortunate, but issues happen with any manufacturer, especially on new models. Neither of these issues makes me think any less of Honda, but I hope your dealer takes care of you and sorts out this issue quickly!
