I am sure Sandra means well, but a lot of the advice given to new grads must be frustrating: "Certs aren't important anymore so focus on projects, BUT everyone has these certs so if you don't have them then you'll automatically get rejected. So do projects and certs! BUT projects aren't enough take online courses that simulate real world work, BUT none of that matters unless you network! so go to conferences and cold message employees or you'll never get a job because you need a mentor who will provide you a reference to stand out, BUT when you go to conferences don't network too much because that will come across as desperate... So study for certs while doing projects while doing online simulated work while attending conferences and networking and writing custom tailored resumes to every job you apply to. Easy!"

Love hearing your perspective on this! For me, that comment was mostly for people with 4+ certs and not actually spending enough time on the technical hands-on work and projects. TY for sharing your thoughts!

These days if you want a high paying job in security you need all the componets: cloud certs, security certs, ai certs, on the job experience in the skills listed in the job description your applying too, little to no employment gap, better written and verbal communicator then the hundreds your compeating against. Once you make it past the gatekeepers and you have the position you also need to convince the manager your a future manager and not just a technician, convince the manager and senior contributors your loyal to them and wont overstep or outstage, you must be empathetic but not too empathetic, you must be able to do everyone elses job because when they get layed off you'll need to, and document absolutely everything. Tough times, but like all times they change. Its not the early 2020s anymore but everything comes down to supply and demand so keep your chin up and keep chasing your dreams. Wether your just starting or your starting again, chase. What others want from you wont necessarily get you there quicker. It can widen perspective, teach you the art of adaptation, teach you how to see the big picture. It can also degrade your passion, split your attention, and send you on a soul searching mission. With all that in mind, if your new and lucky enough to have dreams or youve been burned out by the dumpster fires and keep coming back too them because your just stubborn, dont give up chasing your dreams. Life without dreams is no life at all.

Basically, you have to do everything possible to get into the field. The competition is so much higher today than it was just 5 years ago. It's similar in a lot of fields rn. No companies are willing to train, and they're all on a tight budget. It's brutal out there. I had to work my 🍑 off just to get a low paying office job. I really didn't like the job and now I'm making a move to IT. Life is certainly a tough journey at times.

Thank you for posting this. I will be sharing this with several communities I’m involved with and I think some of these can be used for beginner IT. The free training options that provide experience from real companies was new to me. The recruiter discord and Reddit was very interesting and the scholarships for events was something I’ve never heard of.

I love the suggestions. The tricky part with this type of content is that it’s creating a new baseline for projects like you was mentioned about Comptia Security+. The community would be better served if you privately consulted. In general, I am not sold that project are the way to go, companies want real work experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this field.

Guys… you want to do certs + get experience at the same time. Don’t focus on one or the other. Its competitive out here. I have 5+ GIAC certs and still have trouble sometimes.

I want to start my job search in november, I have always had computer as a hobby, in my resume I have automation script of my malware research, I wrote EDR modules based on drivers and I have my youtube where I show my skills focused more on malware research, with an emphasis on static analysis, emulation, symbolic execution. Does the stuff I did count as experience? I don't want to work remotely so I will only look for work in my country.

So it sounds like get all the certs you can, do online "real world scenario" training, tailor make your resume, and pray you get lucky enough to meet someone who can get you a job? I was looking forward to starting to learn and move careers to something in IT but this is actually kind of discouraging. Seems you have a 50/50 shot that it will actually work out and thats a lot to bargain on for a lot of us.
@WithSandra2 ай бұрын
This 100%. For all lucrative tech jobs out there, especially in this economy, you want to go in with realistic expectations, I don't want to sit here and say that everyone will 100% get hired if they are trying to break into cybersecurity. It's going to take a lot of hard work, studying, networking, applying to a lot of jobs, and spending a lot of time prepping for interviews. But this is the case for most high paying jobs in tech. I personally think its worth it but dont go into this with unrealistic expecations because it can end up being discouraging. I say - start with free training, if you enjoy the material, keep going, if you didn't pivot into a different area or try a different niche in tech instead. Best of luck with whatever you choose!
@RustiSpoons2 ай бұрын
@@WithSandra Solid advice. If I like the material im more apt to continue and do the hard things in order to make sure it works out , at least the best that it can work out based on my effort.

Genuine question: what’s the best way to put together a cybersecurity portfolio or add projects to showcase for potential employers? Website, Github, Blog?? Need help
@WithSandra2 ай бұрын
Great question! Many people start with Github since it's free and you can easily document things there, but having your own website is great to showcase certain projects. You still want to share them in a "resume-friendly" way on your resume and you can add a link to your website or Github on your resume as well. Best of luck!

So I have a senior security analyst from the state of California that is willing to give me a paid internship ship, he used to be a mayor and has done cybersecurity for quite a couple decades, my question is I feel completely lost if I should take him up on it, I don’t feel remotely ready whatsoever I only recently got into school for cybersecurity with zero tech experience I was a medical assistant prior, I feel if I take him up on his offer I should at least know something haha at this point I barely took an intro course into cybersecurity fundamentals and a SQL course. Should I take him up on this offer and possibly make a fool of myself or wait till I have completed a few more courses to even know what others are talking about.

@WithSandra2 ай бұрын
You won't be able to upload any project to a PDF doc of a resume, but just adding it as if it were technical experience and adding 2-3 bullet points about what you worked on and how impactful it is including the technical skills, tools, coding languages, etc. that you used. You can also add your website link with your proj portfolio or your github. Best of luck!
