I've decided I'm gonna try and go for scratch-level golf. Currently, I've played 5 rounds of 18 and I'm roughly a ~38-40 hcp. I was playing No Driver, a TM Sim2 Ti 3w, MacGregor Oversize Battlesticks (3-P blades), a 56* ping wedge, and a Goated Golf putter. Now that my season is over, I've updated my whole bag 😅. I've got an AI smoke TD Max driver, the same 3W, a full set (3-LW, cavity back) Avoda Origin Same Length iron, and a void armlock putter (Going between Goated and Void). What is the advice youd give to someone like me? My short game is solid but i haven't been able to test out my driver yet to see what I can do with it yet.

I have 2 main purposess when I go to the range. One is to work on my fundamentals . I work on grip, stance, alignment, club gapping, shot shaping. The other is to have fun! I find it to be very cathartic. I usually hit more balls than necessary just because Im enjoying myself.

Cheers Sam. I got really into golfing KZbin about 3 years ago. I was in the doldrums with chipping/pitching yips (5 handicap) and I went back to basics (lifting the heel etc) to at least find a shot and take it from there. A couple of channels really helped but then I found I was bombarded with channels and I subscribed to every single one! It's far too much. I tried to thin it out by only following those who put new content up at least in the previous month, but even then it's overwhelming. Over the next few weeks the axe will be wielded. Your channel is safe as I really enjoy it 😂 I already keep a leger of rounds with a few points on it to learn from and I think thats really helped but I'll add your tips. Hopefully get to 3 next year!!

In the off season because of weather, I set up an alignment station and work on my full swing and wedge swing mechanics( grip, shoulder plane, foot spacing, ball position) I also got foam balls that I hit into the living room curtain practicing different backswing lengths and I also bought a putting mat that I put down on the kitchen floor and practice 3,6 & 9’ putts.

Thank you Sam. First time I have met you but have subscribed immediately. You make my top 3. Why? There are two ways to learn anything in life or golf(same thing) - 1. Make all the mistakes and learn from them (this takes a lot of time) 2. Take advice from someone who has already done everything you want to achieve and implement what they teach you. In most things in life there are 20% of things that make 80% of the difference. So it is in golf. Thank you for an excellent video Sam that clearly distills the 20%. I couldn’t tell you accurately my pre-shot routine in detail right now, but that will change within a week!

Stay with it brogey. I went from a 20 to a 13 in one season. My buddies couldnt believe it. My lowest last season was an 81 and i had 2 7s 😡😡😡. Shouldve broke 80 that day. All i really worked on was routine, putting and a consistant swing. Also i only followed tom saguto golf. Never hit the ball so straight. Still working on my driver and distance control.

Great video!! 🎉 Get lessons (especially on course lessons)and get fitted for clubs that suit your swing speed, learn how to use your driver to get rid of the dreaded slice or hook that’s costing you an extra shot or two every hole almost, practice chipping from 10 yards all the way back to 150 yards, learn how to putt and learn how to read greens ( practice your distance control and speed ) and the most important Course management. As a high handicapper you are going to have more bad shots than good shots so the objective is to avoid putting yourself in really bad positions if you know you can make the green but you always slice it or hook it then maybe laying up is a better option or if you can’t use your driver then take a 6 or 7 iron on a par 4 because most par 4s are around 320-420 yards so two or 3 mid irons will get you on the green. Now the sad truth to all this is practicing only at the range especially if its mats only will really slow down your progress. I don’t promote this but sneak onto a course as much as you can especially during sunset in the summer time where the golf clubs close around 5/6pm but the sun doesn’t go down till half 7/8pm because it’s those times where you can practice loads of shots around the greens from all distances, you can learn how to read different greens, you can practice out of a proper fairway bunker and green side bunkers, learn how to play on an upslope and down slope.

Refreshingly different vid Sam! Solid tips for the long run. I have been guilty of following too many utube golfers, but that's life working in Norway over winter!! No golf, few ranges so utube it is!! I follow Steve Johnston, The Art of Simple Golf, Average Golfer and now maybe you! I've been a bogey+ golfer since West Cornwall GC 20 years ago! However I have had to contract globally on ships, oil rigs, Saudi, Libya, Alaska and Norway.... so get to play about 4-5 games a year, so obviously drills are important to me to tick over. Massive weakness is the yips around the green...I have sleepless nights over a ball sitting down 3m off the green on a rain soaked fairway!! Just a simple go to set up and action ! I retire next year so time to get that handicap down to early teens at least!!!! Keep up the good work, and keep it straight forward and simple for us simpletons!! Cheers Si

Great content Sam. I’m trying to get to scratch by the time I’m 50 (currently 48 and off 3.6) after having a 15 year break from golf due to job/kids/life 😊. Any tips for how dial in from 70-100 yards as this costing me strokes every round? I’m also going to try dial-in that straight putt as I don’t hole enough at the moment.

I too am returning (after 20 years), what really worked for me was the Dave Pelz approach. Really recommend his book “Short Game Bible”. Part of it is giving you 3 swings that you can dial in with each of your wedges. A 9 o clock (shaft parallel), 10.30 & 1200. This then automatically gives you 9-12 distances depending on how many wedges you carry.

This wisdom from experience is an approach that is practical, applicable at all levels of play and measurable with data in a given timeframe. It keeps you accountable in a proactive and positive self managed way, then becomes a catalyst or stepping stone to be altered and applied for the next level of attainment. Brilliant. Thank You.👍

IMO: 1. Putting (stroke, know speed, read greens), 2. Chip/Pitch (3, 5, 10, 20, 30 yards), 3. learn a punch shots to understand footwork (pivot) and control ball flight, 4. learn & control one shape shot (fade or draw), 5. follow (1) social media golf instructor.

Great advice! Just to add on to tip #1, when I take a lesson from my instructor, I write down what we worked on and take it to the range that week. Then when applying tip #1, I know what I’m to focus on. Otherwise, I’m just wastefully pounding range balls. My instructor also sends me videos of my swing with comments which is very helpful. Now I have to work on the other 4 tips…

Nice vid and very relevant for me. Been playing golf for only around 4 months pretty consistently, shooting high 80s but i know i can do better. Focusing now on short game, going in the evenings a couple of times a week and practising lots of short game. Chips, putts and 50 yards and in for a couple hours and then hitting low irons at the range for 50 balls. Improving fairly rapidly. Initial goal was scratch in 1 year, currently about an 18. Lofty goal but who knows could be possible.

Short game and putting is great. But getting up and down for a double or triple bogie doesn’t matter. The two hardest things to do are keep it in play off the tee and hot greens in reg. Tee shots and ballstriking are number 1. They are your ceiling in this game. They’re also the hardest and slowest to really dial in. So work on your swing as a priority if being scratch is your goal. Then as that comes together shift some time towards short game and putting and you’ll see your scores change dramatically. Ballstriking is king.
@WoodyWoahzayАй бұрын
This! Also, understanding it's much more important to be able to hit the same number with your club rather than trying to hit your club as far as you can. This changed how I thought about the swing and helped with improving my ball striking.

How do I stop hitting really bad shots where I top or shank it and the ball only goes about 3 feet. I think thats where I loose most of my shots.
@cscoetzeeАй бұрын
This approach seems to be working for me, and I wish I realized this years ago: - It doesn't matter how great/fast/beautiful your swing is if you cannot consistently strike the ball in the center of the club. - If you cannot hit the center consistently when you are swinging slowly, how can you hope to do it at full speed? - If you cannot hit the center consistently when you have a quarter/half/three-quarter swing, how can you hope to do it with a full swing? So, using small, slow swings, find a speed and length of backswing where you can hit the center of the clubface EVERY TIME with EVERY CLUB, without duffing, thinning, shanking or toeing. And - very important! - regrip and re-setup after each shot, without losing this quality of strike. Then, slowly ramp up the speed and/or length until you can achieve a similar quality of strike EVERY TIME.
@TristanMcGrath77Ай бұрын
@ thanks i will try this. I usally try to swing hard because i dont hit my clubs very hard because im younger so i will try it slow it down.
@cscoetzeeАй бұрын
@@TristanMcGrath77 Good luck. It is certainly helping me become more confident and consistent. One thing that surprised me is how far I am able to hit the ball even when I make the swing much slower, as long as I strike it in the center of the clubface.

An excellent video. One observation about tip #5 -- I don't think a KZbin coach can reliably help with your swing since they cannot see what you are doing. They can certainly help with course management, but other than very basic advice on swing technique, I"m not sure KZbin is the way to go. I think getting an in-person lesson from a pro would be the better way to go.
@FeelGoodGolfАй бұрын
Hey Jim, I think a combination can be quite powerful - especially if their teachings/tips are similar, I find that some coaches just have different 'styles' of explaining things which can sometimes land better. Glad you enjoyed the video! Sam
