While I like singing hymns better than (most) modern worship songs, we should be careful not to essentially tell Christians today, “All the worship music we need has already been written, so we don’t need your songs.” Sure, there should be lofty language in some worship music, but there should also be simple, accessible language in others. After all, singing lofty language only honors God as far as the singer understands it. Let every Christian worship God from the heart when they sing, whatever they sing--new or old, lofty or simple.

I would argue that a small child singing "Jesus Loves Me" is just as beautiful to God as a full-on orchestra and choir singing a lofty hymn. No matter how simple or elaborate, worship should come from the heart, in spirit and in truth. Worship is about pleasing God, not the masses.

@@kristieswift4102 Interesting question. Do you now, why the Salvation Army never used pipe organ (the self playing street organ doesn't count)? Because they didn't say "the problem are today's people". The book Exodus shows us, that the people got fresh Mannah everyday. A church shouldn't be a museum. But this doesn't mean, everything new is good and everything old is outdated. Well I play some hymns, that's no question, but as with other songs, I carefully check, is it helpful, does it help the congregation to come into God's presence, is the style helpful. In contemporary worship music, there are also songs, that are like hyms and under the old songs are also ones, you could easily see as (possibly bad) example for today's songs. And not to forget, there also were hymns with a wrong message or with a view of God, that isn't really covered by the Bible.

Years ago, Christian neighbors had a gathering and we were invited though we left when the so-called Christian rock music started. An unsaved neighbor who didn’t enjoy the loud, raucous music that no neighbor could not tell was Christian came and asked me if I was there during the music and I replied no I left when the so-called music began. He was happy to hear this and I was thankful I was able to maintain my Christian testimony. This all reminds me of a dear lady I knew for many years. She had served diligently in a Baptist church in Boise, being faithful for a decade or more. She decided to work in the teen department. When she walked in, the room was blackened and a rock band was playing, and the atmosphere was like you had just stepped into a bar. When she complained, they told her, "Well, if you do not like bars, you will not like working here." She immediately left this Baptist church. The only instruments we see in heaven are harps accompanying worship song. "Rev. 5:7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, reach holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,“Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them ya kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” Though other instruments were used to worship in Israel, including the pipe, though never drums. When Christ rules the world from Jerusalem, horses will ring out as they move in worship for God with bells attached to them. Zechariah 14:20-"In that day 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' shall be engraved on the bells of the horses." We know the music of heaven will be perfect holiness, purity, and innocence as these are some of Christ’s attributes. It will be far more undefiled and innocent than we can imagine! No worldly/secular/trendy music or beat, and immodest dress. The traditions/culture/society, ways of men, are not of Christ-Colossians 2:8, Matthew 15:9, etc. It is all wanting to be rocking and rolling with satan’s sensual ways. If rock music was not satan’s forte, it would not be in our so-called churches. David played lovely melody on a harp that caused a demon to leave Saul. (1 Samuel 16) Saul would rather be plagued by a demon than repent of his sins. We know sexy, rock music with its exposing attire is all-pleasing to satan and the demons. The Grammy awards ceremony worshipped satan with it. We know the demons did not flee. Various rock groups worship satan in song. Ancient harps and harp artwork have been located in Israel and other locals by archeologists, dating back to BC, and they appear to be the same as the harps we see and hear today though with only 10 to 22 strings. Today’s harps own 20 to 40 strings. A Jewish woman of Israel who is an expert in ancient harps, stated that those who hate the Jews hate harps. Perhaps stated from her personal experiences of being an Israelite. Women in churches adore sexy rock drummers and guitarists. Everyone knows the truth! There was a time when choirs were placed in the back of many churches, in the back loft-no show-off talent displayed. We are to dwell on those things lovely and pure. Rock music does not have a lovely melody of purity and innocence. There is a video of the naked cowboy in a church where supposedly the Gospel is preached and the women are going crazy wanting him. This is not of Almighty Holy God and the true Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ of the Bible is all innocence, purity, being undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens; Hebrews 7:26. Ephesians 4 says music is to be melodious, where God’s true children sing and make melody in hearts to the LORD. A sexy-driven beat is blasphemous to what is exampled. We are to be imitators of Christ and His example is harp music with Biblical lyrics as the Song of Moses will be sung in heaven. Archeologists have located ancients harps in Israel that resemble today’s harps, though only holding 22 strings. We must ask ourselves do the instruments allowed in churches represent a chaste, innocent, undefiled, holy melody that represents all of Christ’s undefiled attributes? Do you not find it interesting that satan was worshipped at the Grammy Awards? Did any rock and rolling church of the sexy beat expose and condemn this? I will add, placing drums behind plexiglass drum shields do not transpose the driven beat into a holy melody.

Those songs are considered 'old-fashioned' & 'lofty' - few churches sing them anymore. Todd was demonstrating that the holy reverence of worship music from its inception has all but disappeared. There's something so beautiful about hearing the voices of those in the congregation lifted together in praise to our mighty and wonderful God. As a guitar and bass player in our church, I'm someone who enjoys both full orchestra and modern music, older hymns with just a piano and current worship with a good beat and heavy guitars. The truth is rarely only one or the other is right or wrong. The older hymns are great for doctrine, but (in general) don't move our emotions as part of worship. More of a head vs. heart thing. At the same time, modern worship can over-emphasize the emotional aspects of worship and have less doctrinal focus. More heart over head. But both are important. Truth and emotion are both important parts of worship. It's rare to find a song that does both, but they are out there. I encourage people to rely on the Holy Spirit and their God-given preferences when deciding which songs they personally use to worship. Some people worship best with traditional hymns. Some worship with modern songs and styles. We are both worshipping our great God. In this we can all be united.

I left the Mormon church for many reasons, one of them being the church finds the cross repulsive. I now attend a small church, about 40 members. We sing the old timeless hymns every Sunday using only a piano for an instrument and we have the Sacrament every Sunday

I heartily agree! As a pastor I sometimes include a song or hymn appropriate to my sermon and try to include its ‘human’ story. My hope is that my congregation will see the rich traditions and experience that have served to set our faith and worship in the bedrock of Christ. In a world seeking rootedness we ought to search into Christianity’s witness and experiences of pass generations. In our roots we can find hope for the future. Blessings.

I think the more important question we should be asking ourselves about modern worship music is how much of it preaches Jesus Christ. Just like Sir Isaac Watts' music preaches the glory of Jesus and His Reign, we must treat the lyrical content of our music with as much respect and reverence as we would a Pastor's preaching. On one end of that spectrum, you have Elevation's (yes, I know) O Come to Altar that preaches beautifully of Jesus' mercy and forgiveness, and on the other end you have Hillsong Young and Free that make no more than contemporary pop music save for a few mentions of Jesus or God here and there. This is so important because whereas a preaching may pass through the head and then to the heart, music preaches the truth of Jesus to the heart directly. I don't think instrumentation matters as much as Todd makes it out to be here in the video. Yes, it does matter, but really the whole congregation could be singing acapella, and it would sound no less beautiful than the organ. Heck, the Psalms tell us to sing and shout our praises to the Lord. So, whether you sing hymns, acapella, or modern praise and worship music with heavily produced instrumentation, if it preaches the truth of Jesus Christ and God's word, then our hearts are preached to with the true gospel and Jesus is glorified no less.

When I became a believer the church we went to was going through a transition: should we be more contemporary or traditional? After five or six years they opted for two distinct services, one of each. My wife and I were very neutral and didn't get the controversy, we liked both even though I was a musician that played "contemporary" music outside of church. We thought that the whole subject was given too much emphasis. Not unimportant, but not worthy of major division. I love your channel, but I think yourself and a good number of the people commenting sound more like critics than worshipers. Worship in spirit and truth, make a joyful noise, and ask God what he thinks of YOUR worship not the ones trying to help. PS: organ? Where is that in the psalms? 🤣🤣 just kidding. Blessings to all! 🙏

I suspect that too much of contemporary Christian music lyrics are about personal perceptions inspired more by experience rather than scripture. I think today's worship music is putting the emotional cart before the horse of reason and scripture. People should "get in the mood," not because of the music but because of the message contained in the lyrics.

The Christian Church has sung these great hymns for 500 years, indeed some that we sing actually go back to the early centuries of the faith, and we have had no problem singing them through all the changes and styles of language that have taken place during that time. But it must be added that there are some great modern hymns too and we can sing them along with the older. The secret is discernment and a truly biblically aware leadership to decide which hymns should be sung in a particular church. The problem we have though is that in many churches the leadership is often ignorant of true biblical theology, and the of the benefits of understanding church history. They are more concerned to fill seats and church coffers and make people feel good about themselves than be honouring to God and create reverent services.

Isaac Watts is believed by many to have been a Unitarian. It is Isaac Watts who is largely responsible for the Protestant church jettisoning exclusive Psalm singing in worship. An perfect example of "will worship" (Colossians 2:23).

At the first church I attended after got saved, they only sang hymns. They believed that one should be careful about music with a strong beat and vain repetition. At the church I attended now, the pastor and the music minister agree that modern church songs are needed to bring younger people to Jesus. I disagree, but I'm not in charge. The Word of God is what should bring younger people to Jesus. Hymns don't need to change. It bugs me when we sing what I think is a familiar hymn, but somebody will add verses or choruses to it, but I'm not going to change churches over it. We recently sang a song that repeats eight times in the tag, "Who we talking about? That's my King." If someone comes to (or leaves) a church because of the music, they're misguided. That's based on how it makes a person feel instead of focusing on worshiping God. A proper church should present the Gospel, then give Biblical references on how to know Jesus through sermons and music. They're not supposed to be entertainment centers.

The sad part, the body of CHRIST as a church [es] have forgotten the true essence of worship. Yes, indeed, it's beautiful to hear those sounds of instruments and voices in one accord. But the Book of Revelation speak about and warning the churches, the LORD have somewhat against us churches, because we left our first love. Isaac Watts was concerned about souls, and many are still the same, I've been watching many of those preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of GOD on the street. They too say the same, concern for the souls. But we are only saved when we believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST and do His commandments. We're so focused on music and faith but these are counted nothing if there is no LOVE. Let us all come in one accord, having the Holy Spirit of GOD in us. Let us love one another. Not with empty words but indeed.

I fall under the make joyful noise category, nuance is lost under sola vox. While on paper it works in practice i feel it doesn't. I think christian music sucks but its not about what i think of it, its bout singing Gods praises. Lyrically, what we see over time is the degradation of articulation. Read anything written over 100 years ago and its richer than anything now, books and music secular and spiritual. Like look at the song yankee doodle. A childrens song, it had a story line and some subliminal messaging that was degrogatory but in a way that shaped how people saw each other. Now we have baby shark.... doo doo doo. I feel churches should be more careful as to what they allow to be sung for corporate worship truly examining the lyrics and assiring they are gospel saturated, Christ honnoring God exalting and Holy spirit lead. Sadly music is driven largely by money now so slap a christian label on something sub par and its suddenly a hit is what were left with. Hymns are beautiful id love to see their revival. Why not encourage the excellence in music for God's glory? Lyrically and instrumentally.

I really like hymns, but I also like praise songs from the '80s, '90s and early to mid 2000s. Ever since 2006, I struggled with following the lyrics and melody of contemporary songs. I've also noticed how you can't tell Christian movies from clean-ish secular movies. It would be nice to see a decent Christian movie that isn't compromising.

How about the unaccompanied singing of the Biblical Psalms in worship? For the most part, the early church (until the 12th Century) regarded musical accompaniment as the unauthorized introduction of Levitical temple service into the Christian church. They sang a cappella (from the chapel, eg, the way we sing in church). In his commentary on Psalm 92:3, John Calvin wrote that the use of musical instruments was wholly an Old Testament thing. It would, he argued, ‘bury the light of the Gospel, should we introduce [and take a ‘silly delight’ in] the shadows of a departed dispensation.

As both a minister of the gospel and a musician, I do 100% agree that most modern “worship songs” are simply bad. Not because they’re modern but because a lot of them are riddled with doctrinal issues and are written by second rate musicians. With that said though, not all modern songs are bad. In fact, some of the better ones out there don’t even come from the big-five (hillsong, bethel, elevation, maverick city, gateway). Although I do agree that a lot of hymns are superior to most modern worship songs in terms of the composition, where I do draw the line is elevating tradition and treating it as sacred. Several years ago, I was a member of a church that clung to a particular hymnal because the founder of the church composed it. The older folks simply refused to sing out of any other hymnal and rejected anything new. When the church started to grow, we voted on having projectors installed so people on the live stream could sing along with us on their mobile devices. It made the older church members mad to the point that they started to stir up division within the church. This happened for several months until it reached a breaking point and the church split. Christians squabbling over technology and hymnals. Imagine that! All that to say this, it’s ok to have your preferences but never elevate preferences if they don’t align with the word of God. God cares more about seeking and saving that which is lost than the church striving to be trendy or fighting to preserve tradition.

There is a big difference in noise and music. When I shop the racket coming through the speakers sounds a lot like modern churches. Jesus called the place of worship a house of prayer, without reverence it's just a gathering place for goats to feed on whatever their flesh wants.

Modern "praise and worship" music makes me want to gag. I only go to small churches where there is congregational singing of the old hymns such as in Heavenly Highways or Great Hymns of the faith. The old hymns are more powerful, emphasize the blood of Christ and what He did for us, instead of what we do for Him. Plus there is something lifting and bonding about singing yourself in a group as opposed to listening to someone else sing. Singing makes you feel better (i.e. joyful). If I walk into a church house and there is a drum set on the stage for the band and a light show, then I know I'm in the wrong place.

I am so thankful I finally found a church that understands the point being made here. My church has limited instrumentation (a keyboard or guitar, that's it) and we all sing out of actual printed hymnals! No projection. No rock band. No Hillsong/Bethel/Elevation crap. Just tried and true hymns that have been thoroughly tested for their doctrinal strength. It's like a breath of fresh air compared to the overly emotional, charismatic mush-brain music played at most churches today.

Whatever instrument is used, it should be the best that instrumentalist has to offer. Preferences are a thing, but, when a congregation is meeting to worship together, there are some things that work better than others. I could easily compose an organ accompaniment that would sound beautiful, but no one could sing with it. An orchestral arrangement with unique chord structures can be very distracting. A well arranged song with drums, guitar, and bass can be used quite effectively to worship our God. Our best for congregational singing is not the same as singing a solo, or singing totally alone in your home.

If I don't understand the Old English language, I ask someone or look it up. In the hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," I didn't know what a fetter was. ("Let thy goodness like a fetter bind my wandering heart to Thee.") A fetter is chain that binds a person's ankles so they can't run away.

Worship was never orginals hymns it was in latin and in was georgaian chant and the argument against having hymns in the people's language it that it not lofty enough. 500 years later we're making the same argument about in favour of hymns as cathoic were about bannign hymns

I like Hymns however I don’t think we should only sing hymns there are different types of music that glorifies God hymns are only one type. Ephesians 5:19 says “ speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” We should sing a combination of types of songs to the Lord what matters most is not the technical skill of the musician or the poetic skill of the writer but the heart of the person singing the song.

Today’s contemporary worship music is atrocious. The lyrics are haphazardly thrown together without thought and the melodies are lifeless beyond memory. It all sounds the same and most of it is man centered. Actually I can only think of one contemporary song that doesn’t fall into that category and that’s “In Christ Alone” by the Gettys. And if there’s one thing I can guarantee you it’s that none of these songs will be remembered or sung 100 years from now but the tried and true songs of great writers like Issac Watts and Charles Wesley will be sung until the end of this world.

New Covenant Whole Gospel: How many modern Christians cannot honestly answer the questions below? Who is the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Who is the “son” that is the “heir” to the land in Matthew 21:37-43? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary? What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. God is not now a “racist”. He has extended His love to all races of people through the New Covenant fulfilled by His Son’s blood at Calvary. The Apostle Paul warned against using “genealogies” in our faith in 1 Tim. 1:4, and Titus 3:9. If the New Covenant is "everlasting" in Hebrews 13:20 and the Old Covenant is "obsolete" in Hebrews 8:13, why would any Christian believe God is going back to the Old Covenant system during a future time period. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. Despite "Christianity" perverting the term to preach lawless gospels about its fake Christ, it does NOT give ppl a license to disregard the Law. looking at how young Pastor Todd was, and the Film Quality, I would say Early to mid 1990's, also, Todd was in England in that old Footage, that Church he was in was the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Spurgeon's Church! so, if he had been in England a While before filming, he may have picked up the Accent at bit!

If we want to worship with good music, our family would need to travel an hour to church rather than worshipping with local believers. We've done that in the past, but end up having little to no fellowship with those we worship with. There are some local churches that have more traditional and lofty music, but then we forced to disagree on fundamentals with them. Either they are legalistic, or they have a very big misunderstanding of how one is saved and what baptism is supposed to do. I have led music in the past in some churches, and have tried to help as a member of a praise band in others. It is nearly impossible, without going to the nearest metropolis, to find a church that participates in hymns without having to sacrifice something more fundamental. So we go where The Word is preached faithfully without adding to it, and deal with the unfortunate emptiness of most Contemporary Christian Music nearly all of the time.

Sola Vox. Zwingli, Bullinger, Calvin and Spurgeon agreed instruments had no place in the worship assembly. As did both John and Charles Wesley (the hymn writer). In Isaac Watts time, instruments and music used in worship were controversial; Watts was a hymn writer but did not write music.
