The Ranger is the Underestimated and Underappreciated class. It can do quite a lot. 1. Tank Duty - With a d10 hit dice, proficiency in Medium Armor and Shields, a Ranger with 14 Dexterity in Half-Plate has 17 AC - add on a shield for 19 AC. With a 14 Constitution, it tends to have the same hp as a fighter or paladin of the same level. It's also proficient in all weaponry. 2. Skill Monkey - Excluding Race and Feats, a Ranger can start off with 5 skills - 2 from background, 3 from the class. 3. Extra Attack - like all Martial sorts. Oh, and Hunter's Mark can amp up the damage. 4. Extra Fighter - At high enough levels, Rangers can summon additional allies to assist in combat. 5. Combat Medic - Goodberry and Cure Wounds. Overall, lots of mileage. Only issues might be Intelligence and Charisma, as they aren't needed too much (probably make Intelligence a 10 and make Charisma an 8, unless one rolled very well with stats).

@@lockwoan01 honestly Tasha's gave Ranger a more efficient Hunter's Mark. dont need to burn a spell-slot for a spell that is already essentially replaced by a class feature that could instead be a support or damage spell like say Flame Arrows, Alarm to let the party safely long rest in the field, or an extra Cure Wounds. at this stage Ranger gets more mileage by *not* taking Hunter's Mark anymore XD

@@sekira4516 Not really - Favored Foe does an extra 1d4 damage per turn (increasing to d6 at 6th level and d8 at 14). Hunter's Mark, on the other hand, does an extra 1d6 for each attack - Main, Extra, and Bonus - or an extra 3d6 for a 5th level ranger that likes to engage in 2-weapon fighting. 3d6 is better than 1d4, 1d6 or 1d8.

@@lockwoan01 Id respond saying while yes its not the greatest damage in the world, its free bonus damage that doesnt consume your spells which can be used for a variety of other beneficial support spells the ranger can utalize. Also in my personal opinion Hunter's Mark is a trap for rangers because sure an extra d6 of damage is awesome on every attack, so is being able to use Entangle to hold a group of enemies in place, Fog Cloud to stop enemy archers/spellcasters (most good cc spells require LoS so reducing that risk is amazing, even most AoE's require a visual point). Its better to view Hunters Mark as a tracking ability when facing enemies that like to go invisible... or let them 'escape' to track back to a base or something similar that also helps with dealing damage on an important enemy. At least thats my opinion on it

I am a sucker for classes that are neither too strong nor too weak, and Ranger really hits the spot sometimes. Sure, the other classes might be more powerful, but sometimes, you don't need to be powerful in order to be interesting. Ranger got a lot of hate because mechanically, there's nothing they can do that a fighter can't--outside of favored terrain and enemies, and the terrain, the biggest feature of a ranger in the first place, is unlikely to ever even come into play. That said, Tasha's added quite a bit mechanically to rangers, so the old memes about them just don't really fit anymore, imo.

The new options in Tasha's raise the stock of the ranger outside those scenarios too. Expertise in perception all the time is useful for a dungeon crawl (nevermind that other classes get that option too.)

I think the biggest thing people typically overlook is the fact that Rangers are actually full martial classes, meaning they have access to all those bread and butter weapons like Mauls and Greatswords, not just Rapiers and Longbows. From my experience, the ideal ranger is more of a switch-fighter/support, able to rotate into & out of combat roles as circumstances change. But people hear "Ranger" and think it means they're one-trick, ranged only characters, and thereby go in with a preconceived notion of the class, and build them poorly as a result, blaming the class when they realize other classes can do "their one job" better than them.

I've yet to play a ranger (but have plans to) and I honestly dont get the hate for rangers. If anything, I can understand that beast master feels a bit weak in the sense of that you have to sacrifice one of your attacks to have your beast attack instead. Why dont the pet get their own place in the turnorder and attacks? (some would say it's OP, but I dont see a problem with it.) As for the favored enemy/terrain, it's fricking amazing, especially if you work on it with your DM. "Well what if I choose to be able to have favored terrain as Tundra and there's no Tundra?" Stuff like that, sure, but talk to your DM. Either they'll add something in, or if they aint planning to use such areas, then ask if you can change to a different terrain.

Rangers can be insanely powerful. You can burn all your spellslots on goodberry before you sleep, get you spell slots back, and then basically have better and more flexible potions of healing. Fog Cloud can completely shut down ranged attackers and a lot of spells and if youre a melee attacker you can use blindsight. Or use crossbow expert and sharpshooter with the archery fighting style to completely out DPS the rest of the table. Base Ranger is powerful even without doing cheesey things.

Fizbans has a ranger subclass that gives you a pet drake. So that would be perfect if not all the dragons are bad or if maybe you wanted to do a nature vs nurture thing. Otherwise the monster slayer one would be good for targeting dragons and only dragons. Could also go gloom stalker or swarm keeper or primal beast master for a ranger thats properly optimized and not all over the place (classic rangers faulty). Ranger can be LOADS of fun. And because it's Dex&Wis based, you can MULTICLASS in like damn near EVERYTHING. At least like half the classes are Dex or Wis based so it makes multiclassing with ranger pretty easy.

In combat, being an archer, he's capable of dealing astounding damages up to a very long range. His powers are good both in offense and defense and he he has saved the day more than once with some well placed spell, premium ones being spiked growth, cure wounds and lightning arrow. @@sekira4516 I don't think that is the only problem, many Dms I've played with usually do not consider about survival factors in the wild environment. Its like no need for a pilot if all planes are auto piloted in campaigns, or making every dungeon illuminated so there is no need for dark vision or torch. Usually journeys to destinations are skipped with free teleportation from an NPC wizard, or with time skip until there is combat and etc.

You just said everything I keep trying to say in too many words about the class and what I detect in it, but I played it once, and sometimes despite being a game designer and studying it so well a little dense somehow when actually trying to play D&D. I could say I strongly get D&D except all of Class Balance and Leveling in terms of how the gameplay looks over time in actual Practice. Otherwise we get pretty much all of D&D game design...which is why it is not hard to spot the Warlock and Ranger problems, and I only hesitate about crticising them for Class Balance and play experience we do not have concerning progression...even though you can...just...read the rules for progression. In other words, lack of confidence due to lack of play experience when others stand up for classses and make arguments. But what you just said...Yep. 100%. Spotted it a long time ago, but could never describe it without that doubt over speaking out of turn or being accidentally ill informed or understanding. Eldritch Blastlock...hahaha! I made a ranger NPC for a one-shot for a campaign I’m DM’ing that was set a few years before the main story. His backstory was basically the entire world collectively giving him the worst possible time (rangers are running jokes in my group too). I introduced him as a DMPC that mostly sat back and acted as a guide and lore drop when needed, and also managed to always roll terribly for him (funny, that, but it fit the theme). Anyway one player was kind, one tried to sacrifice him, the others were neutral, but he survived the one-shot. Now this man is alive, and in the main campaign world somewhere. Their actions dictated what he would become, but he’s had years of a head start, and he is stronger than them now. They can only hope that they are prepared for the consequences of their one-shot characters decisions. Very excited for the reveal, but perhaps one kind man in a world of darkness was enough to steer him right, perhaps.

Dude, as a fellow DM/Player (I DM my own campaign on Saturdays, and play my friends campaign on Sundays) I must know what happens with this Ranger lmao. Im kind of interested in the story now. Want to know how things fare with this Ranger who survived something he wasnt supposed to survive apparently. This is the reason I love to DM. Im a storyteller and having to tell a story based around the decisions my players make is a challenge. Seeing them enjoy the story Im telling and seeing the emotions they feel when something happens whether it be good or bad is the most enjoyable thing. Seeing them be that invested in something I created for them is very rewarding. A friend once asked me why I put myself through the stress of creating a world and story just for it to probably turn out to be the complete opposite of what I intended in the first place. I told him that to me that was the fun of it. Sometimes what my players do actually makes it better than what I had created in that moment. In my opinion, its more fun to build a story, and then watch it change and grow with what my players do, than just writing a normal story by itself. I dont know, its hard to explain why I have more fun being a DM than a story writer by itself lmao.

My first character was actually a ranger, and I loved her! It just also happened that my DM (not yet boyfriend, and definitely not yet ex boyfriend) happened to NOT MENTION ON THE SESSION ZERO that our campaign was going to happen underground, in a dungeon, (my land proficiency was forests) and my character (a human) was the only one who didn't have night vision! Coupled with my shit dice making me miss every single object, it got so immensely frustrating that I nearly quit D&D altogether. It was until we came across a gelatinous cube that I was actually helpful, where everyone else's weapons were missing. I normally play paladins now, but I still miss my ranger. if you need a backstory tip, try fleshing them out with a group that your character belongs to. for example, my warlock who was tricked as a young child into making a pact with a fiend, and formed the order of the black cat, with others who were also preyed upon. their goals are to research infernal law to escape their contracts, and to search for others like themselves or my half orc noble cleric, chosen by his warband to be an ambassador for peace now that the new warchief has taken over and stopped the raiding of farms and villages. as an orcish cleric, he's more of a tribal shaman so hes in touch with his ancestor spirits, and since he has human ancestors as well aas orcish ones, he was chosen specially for the task. or my halfling wizard, apprentice to the goldtop brewery who, after his master died, inherited the business, and the dark secret. old gaffer goldtop was a master wizard, and a member of the Fine Fettle, a group of secret halfling wizards, each using magic to improve their artisan products. he must now seek out these wizards as the inheritor of the brewery, to tell them of his masters death and his promotion to the order create a group of people, and you have an instant cool backstory

@raznaak
@raznaak 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanthom8176 yeah. I ask at least for some written notable moments of backstory or if able a real story. One player I played with in a few games gives either no backstory beyond the character sheet or sometimes verbally tell something extremely vague... then as the campaign advances, she tells things like "My character should know that!" when something she thinks would be advantageous happens or "I take out of my bag [insert item]" when she clearly never bought that item and when challenged she says "Well, because of my backstory my character obviously has it"... WHICH BACKSTORY??? So when I became GM for a new game, I knew her enough by then. I asked for a real backstory, and when she tried to be vague, I made suggestions and asked for confirmation of the backstory before finalizing it. I also asked for an explicit inventory list (usually we play somewhat loosely with items as we trust each others, but with her I had to be cautious, so I asked everybody for a full inventory). There's also something like a fate point system and I often noticed as a played that she used then quite often... so I also keep track of her points... So the few times she told me "Well, my character knows this" or "I obviously have that item", I pointed to her sheets and told her no. And when she tried to use more fate points than she had, I told her no. She argued that she didn't used them all, and I showed her the paper where I kept track of them... She also complained that I didn't give her as much xp as the other players, while I explicitly told them I'd give xp based on the play they made in addition to the base game xp, and she was on her cell half of the games, without interacting except when prompted (while she was supposed to play a diplomat character with insane charisma and she always presented herself as someone with insane RP capacities...). It's sad that I had to do that, but she was basically low-key cheating. It's not fair to the other players if they have to work for their stuff and achievements, and she just gaslighted the GMs into giving her more stuff. Since I knew her habits, I knew what to look for and how to prevent it... Since then she had a fallout with another player and left the game, and everyone felt better after she left...

Back before the release of the artificer class, I was gearing up to play in a short campaign in 5e, but didnt know where to start. When I asked my buddy what base class I would be in D&D, he immediately said " Ranger, since they don't have anything resembling an Artificer class.". I asked him why and he said " Your mannerisms, mindset, knowledge and resourcefulness make you a perfect candidate for the class.". After that I took his advice, made a Ranger character and had a blast. Main morals to take away from this? Some classes just click for certain people, and those classes are what people naturally gravitate towards. That said, sometimes, even the most overlooked base classes can unexpectedly be your real jam if you just step outside your box and give 'em a try. Worked for me after all... might work for you as well.

The character I loved playing the most was a Dwarf Bard/Sorcerer (3.5 Edition) with a focus on "Sound/Vibration" spells. I figured that the Dwarven Bard would be an historian and scholar, and since the Sorcerer Class also used Charisma as a base, I could have access to all the sound/vibration based spells at all times without preparation. Sound carries differently through caves, and echoes are something Dwarves would be naturally attuned with. I loved that build.

Once, I used Hunter's Mark on an enemy and ended up tracking them all the way to their hideout, which saved us a lot of time since we didn't have to find the entrance and we went through the lesser guarded back door. As a ranger main in D&D, this makes me sad and want to hug this ranger. I play Ranger's for 4 main reasons: 1) you can start with a Longbow which has an effect Range of 150 feet, and a maximum range with disadvantage up to 600 feet. 2) At second level you start to get magic, and get access to 2 spells. The best spells of choice are Hunter's Mark, and Cure Wounds, allowing you to deal extra damage, provided you can maintain concentration on the spell, though with your Longbow's range, you're not likely to get hit in the first place, and Heal yourself and your party if needed. 3) The Ranger's level 3 primeval awareness is really useful in determining if there are any aberrations, celestials, dragons, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead within a 1 mile radius. Even though this ability doesn't reveal the location or number, its still useful to know what is out there. and 4) All of the Ranger Archetypes are good, though my personal favorite is the Gloom Stalker, because it grants Darkvision if you don't have it already, extends the range if you do have it, and also makes you invisible in darkness to any creature that relies on Darkvision to see you in darkness. Also, the other abilities of Gloom Stalker are useful too. At 5th level, Rope Trick can basically guarantee the party a safe spot to short rest in just by using a 10 foot rope. Of course, my main stat as a ranger is Dexterity, followed by Strength, Constitution, Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma.

a first time player in my game picked ranger and ended up with horizon walker, they love it. I talked to them ahead of time so they would pick favored terrain and enemies that would fit the game, they scout ahead, bring a nice skill set to the table with some variety and in combat act like a striker. Tough enough to take a hit and good at taking down the small fry which prior to them and the monk joining always gave the paladins and cleric trouble. You don't always need to "excell" to be good or be appreciated as a class. The wizard NPC who had been hanging with the party prior to the ranger showing up and giving off hints of some form of instability. The half orc dose primeval awareness and goes "oh there is a dragon within five miles of us? ok that's bad." The "Wizard" is visibly concerned and ultimately this helped culminate in the black dragon being unmasked for who they really where and their intentions.

Yeah...But people also complain about the roleplay struggle and the feat issue hitting hard as far as...I am the Forest Guy! Without a Forest... Ooh I have a pet! And they die...Can we make this better? Oh I have a Bow! And the Assassin Rogue just outbowed me, and the Fighter, and the Warlock's Eldritch blast for some reason... Listen, I am not even good enough at playing D&D to criticize something some days, and horde breaker and some other stuff is great. But even I know something doesn't sound right when, even after playing a ranger, everyone else is more damaging with their attacks, make more attacks, can also use a bow, a lot of spells still make the ranger feel like it is this weird fake druid half caster thing with a few arrows, and we added damn Drakes and Dragons to make up for the class. I played it once, and again I am not the most thoroughly trained player regarding how all of the classes function and work. But recognizing a Warlock is weaker than a Wizard is a no brainer, and matches the history of the game, sadly. Figuring out that the features are really odd and broad and vague for Ranger at times as far as scope and when they come up, is found just in the text. Getting that a low level animal just dies and that is it, and it ain't a familiar, is simple math. Recognizing Fighters with a Bow are Better, but just are not called Archers and given a subclass for the Bow, only feats...Yeah, that is a huge glaring issue. If Rangers could do Bowmanship like no other thing alive, it would be in some ways what it is supposed to be. If instead of being specific all the time to favored enemies and terrain, and could always take that tracking and other things elsewhere, it would make some sense nad be better, but we also I think have a class that some days is lacking identity in itself. That speaks of more disinterest or confusion or dislike on my part, but for real I think it is a genuine problem where what the Ranger is...Is not very clear always. Even if you get it, you don't. Warlocks are evil pact buddies, wizards are magic users and students of power, sorcerers are inborn magic conquerors pretty much, and barbarians are enraged and often stupid warriors with certain base and tribal qualities, rogues are thieves and assassins, druis protect the wilderness and nature...And that can be any kind of Nature...Clerics are Priests, Paladins are Holy Crusaders, Artificers are magic tinkerers and madmen, and Fighters...Fighters have a problem too, but at least they are basically a Fighter enough to make up for it, and can be a knight, soldier, champion, gladiator...Or an Archer... What is a Ranger? A scout? We have rogues. A Nature man? We have Druid. An Archer? We have rogues, fighters, and even Warlocks if they did not take Eldritch Blast. A Guardian and Protector of Civilization? Okay, how does that translate into the game and abilities? It does have some things that bother me in the back of the head, even if I have heard and know some things where I may not be entirely clear on all of the class, the game, and everything to know for sure if something is really fully wrong...Or it just got off on the wrong foot and is ignored over other options. Honestly though, it may be that the Ranger needs greater exagerration or aligning things beneficially to be better for what the class and its identitiy is supposed to be as unique and able. Problem with this and the Paladin was they both were Amalgamation classes at the beginning, crossed between Fighting-Man and Clerics, and Fighting Man, Paladin, and maybe a bit of Druid originally. The class is too much a hybrid between things that got better on theirr own enough to overshadow and replace Ranger, is the way it may be. I don't know. I am going to keep looking at i.t

@@mitchellslate1249 While I get that a Ranger is and can be lacking in areas where another can shine, you don't always have to pick favored terrain or favored enemy or primeval awareness, it's what Tashas was trying to rectify. Yes there are multiple other classes who can do it better but it's not always about being being better, if you want a solid ranger you can build them so that they make way more attacks than a fighter, you want them to be a better scout than a rouge go gloomstalker or horizon, you don't have to go beast master if you don't want to. A base ranger may not be the best but I feel like they have the best versatility, they can be utilized in any aspect where one class is focused only. You can out tank a paladin, you last longer than a barbarian, you can do more damage than a rouge or fighter. A Rangers spells are aimed at survival and utility not aimed at becoming all powerful like other spell casters. All in all it depends on the ranger you want, they can be amazing and absolutely outshine any other person in the party in multiple ways.

@mitchellslate1249
@mitchellslate1249 2 жыл бұрын
@@ruined_maze1370 i like the argument Ranger is survival and utility since it matches the class distinction...however, Tasha's let us face it was homebrewing the classes and races with intermix features. In orther words, Tasha was about "rectifying" d&d by making it so players could ignore certain things and just customize. I admit not knowing all of how and getting the full picture of Tasha's, but from my understanding you are talking about the proof of the problem that Ranger has to be kitted and even refitted in different ways. The generlist ranger is still standout, and making them more of one class and then another, proves it is out of place in standing on its own. Its niche class should be Range and Wilderness, but has no mechanical and systemic way of expressing this well, same as Warlock. Warlock is just lesser magic user still even eith invocations. Some days it is not even if classes are viable, but that they do not fee right because they dont fit in as a strong and decisive class independent of others by design. Ranger is a weaker generalist that can focus on an aspect to be good at if it wants to. Warlock can specialize some by invocations as well, but still is a weaker spellcaster. You can argue both can be viable and effective...but they are not meant to. Anyone can see that they are not designed to stand on their own feet, but have to be like a rogue, paladin, or barbarian, or be generally between these classes. Most druid subclasses are unique, wizard is just powerful, sorcery points is something at least, but the feats of ranger and warlock and the way they progress is weird, substandard, not unique, and just bizarely low and out of place. Because Ranger was always between classes of paladin and druid, and paladins just better fighters, and warlocks and sorcerers just weakrr wizards and magic users. That is D&D and it has not changed over time. They could not figure out how to do it in 5e, how to make Ranger unique and effectively its own class and what it is even. It is a fighter druid! That is it really. Its features were a problem and ineffective from get go. Warlock they gave a long term leveling and progress though substandard and weaker, because as some who defend warlock point out it is not designed for normal fights, but long haul spellcasting when wizards are down to cantrips with less power than a warlock. This is abnormal to a point where 5e was not just designed right, and warlock is just weaker, and dependent on eldritch blast alone. You can say effective...but a little ill as far as unique, diverse in tactics, and just stagnant in what is done, andI ahve seen powrrful warlocks, dont get me wrong. But design wise it is still weaker wizard, and this becomes where Lore for Ranger and Warlodk does not fully fit class as far as being separated from others. Barbarians rage, palafins have their faith, clerics are priest, rogues are thieves and assassins, fighters...well they are generalist, specific, perhaps basic as argued, but knights, warriors nonetheless. Wizards are wizards. Sorcerers at least superpowered wizards. Artificers are tech magicians. Druid...I played druid, but they do still have good nature options. Just a little odd as spellcasters due to how they are used in a support way...but that has been true since OD&D. That is my point. Ranger and Warlock are weak and standoffish because they are half classes and hybrids, not independent strengths on their own.

and Hunter was the base subclass and while it didnt *excel* at anything what makes it a good subclass is how versatile it is and how there isnt a situation it's at a disadvantage unlike most other classes which have a weakpoint of some kind. Hunter is good because of it's ability to fit into any party comp and work, it isnt all that specialized and it doesnt need to be. an overall solid generalist subclass that can act as the anchor to any party composition. people who still diss Ranger for being bad are also people who havent actually read the class and it's subclasses while using actual brain cells to think of how they're used. they just look at Paladin, Rogue, and Fireball and assume any damage output not equivalent isnt viable.

Rangers as of now are amazing skill monkeys Since Tashas arrival. And can expertise (canny) a skill they want at early levels, making an expert and really feel like they Excell in places (expertise stealth and pass without a trace effectively makes them the best stealth characters too, without even looking at gloomstalker or other subclasses). Now lemme show you what little stuff you are missing out on and what Rangers do better Ontop of that they got spells like swift quiver (making up to 4 attacks with ranged weaponry in a round, pairs good with a feat I'll go into kater), class abilities that make you a master in traversing and being a master hunter, start off knowing a crap ton of languages, you are a pen ultimate survivor that can be a single man band with tireless and can turn invisible whenever at lv 10, ZEPHYR STRIKE (under-rated), strange utility spells that make them amazing trackers, fighting styles, they just work better with feats like sharpshooter becuase of extra attack (so yeah no, still better ranged output than a messly druid) have climb and swimming speeds so they can do weird stuff to environments like climb a hill to be out of harms way for free with just movement alone, you automatically at early levels move faster than most, fighting styles, can use ANY martial weapon and ANY METAL medium armor (and can easily upgrade to heavy with a feat for extra protection), can cast many spells druids hardly ever pick up and are able to cast for free once a day, and at later levels just deal more damage with weapons overall and can fight even blinded or against invisible and can vanish from fights and be hard to track with just bonus actions all while remembering they can communicate with anything nature based and feel more intune with nature (more than a druid both in rp and mechanically) so.... I mean, looking past the features and cool tools and abilities they got, they also simply do more damage and out pace and are more reliable in straight up damage and survivability compared to druids. Druids aren't really even the top or even middle of the list when it comes to damage numbers for spell casters. Rangers with just extra attack and casting a spell like hunters mark already outpaced most of the damage a Druid can do from early on (and this is without looking at fighting styles like archery, and feats like crossbow expert and sharpshooter and higher levels spells like fire arrow, hail of thorns, magic weapon, and swift quiver which basically combined would outclassed druids damage potential basically through the whole game.) And again, we aren't even looking at subclasses yet, which some are monstrous damage dealers and dripping with flavor. So... yeah. There's your reason ^-^)/

My very first character I ever played in a dnd campaign was for a water deep campaign. She was a forest gnome (stealth and animal friends go brr) who lives inside an oversized wizard hat with hatches on the sides to put out gloves hands/canary/rat/food/items, strong tight like trousers sewn around the brim so the hat is completely sealed, and eye holes cut into it to help see. It stored all sorts of things and the bottom of it could be unzipped to reveal another, smaller hat underneath if she ever needed to free her arms for her bow or let out a larger animal or piece of kit or needed to wash (minor illusion spell is epic for small gnome). Her name was Catkin and she got away with so many things because of the utility hat to the point where she succeeded in charming the BBEG with her strange looks ("what is this.... odd item?") And he took her with him where the rest of the party helped in a half rescue, half stealthy assassination attempt because having a ranger on the inside was good. I have always wanted to go back and revisit her

I later multiclassed her into Druid, but picked a subclass that basically was just ‘more Ranger spells and unarmored defence’. Ever seen a Lvl 7 character with an AC of 19 and the ability to parry, riposte or use Defensive Duelist as the situation demands? Best kill she had was on a red dragon.
