The only way I can see flip phone internal screens becoming more durable to scratches (to an extent) would be if they can create some sort of hybrid screen. They could have glass on the top and bottom (or left and right) and somehow integrate the plastic part into the glass but only where the fold is.

That's what I've been saying for a while, but the durability of the middle plastic section and also the feeling must be spot on, I don't think there's a seamless way to do that rn
@pietro937
@pietro937 Жыл бұрын
Actually the screen is indeed a hybrid made of glas and plastic. Right now it is not possible to bend glas this shape and size (that has something to do with the size of the cross section). A good example is glas fiber. Toughness of glass but nearly flexible as rubber. All of that thanks to the small cross section. So it is understandable that foldable sceeens have plastic but add a bit of glass to enhance their toughness.

Gotta say, the 5 looks really frickin pretty, it truly is a gorgeous and useful piece of kit by now. I've used lots of foldables by now with no issue so I know the worries are far over-hyped (at least with Samsung in particular) and tbh if there's a green Flip 6 I'll probably turn in my Flip 3 for that. Usually very hard on my phone (and can't really escape it at work). Otterbox and a glass screen protector have saved it so many times from some rather ugly falls, bumps, and scratches. Not the most aesthetic case but it hasn't let me down protection-wise.
@deathghost65
@deathghost65 Жыл бұрын
Dbrand has nice bulky protective cases like Otterbox but they sell high quality stickers that attach to the case to give it a new look. The stickers feel smooth and not glossy. So if you wanna change the look again just change the sticker (about $25 for the sticker). The case itself has a very grippy rubber that feels kinda like smooth stone (about $50 for the case and sticker together). But the Dbrand case doesn’t block ports (or at least the cases I got didn’t) and isn’t as water proof as the Otterbox though.

i would not remove the plastic screen protector, my fold 3s screen protectors started bubbling on its own 6 months into its life, i ignored it and didnt get it re-applied, eventually 3 months later the inner screen turned black in the center, and stopped working. I personally believe the screen protector is a key component of the screen, without it your phone will be a ticking time bomb, in terms of your screens longetivity. The screen protector on my fold 4 has stayed on with no signs of bubbling at all, and seems to have been applied with more strength. i have not had any issues with it, I bought the fold 5, and i imagine i wont have any issues with that either.

The relative quality of smartphone cameras is all the same, especially when you start comparing it to dedicated cameras which capture many times more information. Phones are just for point and shoot, and any phone nowadays can capture nice photos. Anyway, folding and flipping phones have gotten a lot better wehn it comes to durability, Moto and Oppo don't even suffer from cracking the folding screen, since they now utilize the "U" shape when folded, there's dust and water resistance now, sure it's not IP68 but 90% of people never fully utilize IP68 even if they have it, it's overkill for an average joe. Hey Zack, i wouldn't recommend the flip for your hands. As you mentioned before, you have workers hands and i can verify that the rough skin on a thumb, is enough to scratch that plastic screen. Already after about a week of use, you can clearly see small scratches on it. after a few months, the bottom screen will start to look like frosted glass. I dont understand why they dont just use 2 screens, theyve already mastered seamless panels.

I wonder why the flip / fold gets so much hate. I started to use the fold 3. And going to swap to the fold 5 today. Im more than just pleased with it. Yes it does have its trough backs but considering its an actual foldable phone + tablet in some way its a clean 10/10 for me. Over the next few years refinement will happen. I just hope for the inner screen to last longer. More battery capacity and maybe somewhat of a usual ratio. But other then that. I wont change back to a note and surely not to an iphone.

So, I think the curve in the glass breaking when dropped can be a good thing actually. If it was a flat screen, it would still break but then the shattering would be all over the screen, whereas with the curve, most of the breaking is kept in the curve. Although, that said, having the curve gives less area for contact with the ground when dropped, meaning more pressure on a smaller area, so the phone is more at risk of becoming unusable (I would know, I lost an S22 Ultra to an unlucky asphalt drop)

It's my first foldable, upgrading from my 4 years old galaxy s10. It was honestly still a very serviceable phone, which is why I picked another samsung device, but it's age is just starting to show by giving me lags and it's horrendously slow storage making me wait half a minute to load old pictures. I love the cover screen and I'm using it a lot, my brother in law uses an older flip and he pretty much always have it unfolded unless if it's going to his pocket. The Flip 5 however give you a reason to keep it folded, it's less of a gimmick now and more of a convenience thing. I have a small hand and the cover is AMAZING for one handed use, small things that I usually would do 2 handed can be done in the cover screen. Replying to messages, music, navigation, selecting routines for my smart devices, watching youtube, and even play games! For the inner screen, I really overestimated on bad the crease would feel and looks. It's thought it would be more of a gouge, but it's less distracting and the slope even feel nice to fidget with. Also, I don't know how they did it, it feels like glass, and it's way tougher than you would think. You REALLY have to intentionally try to scratch it with your fingernails for it to leave a mark. Can't think of a downside, all I have to compare it to is my old S10 so everything's an upgrade.

I upgraded from the S20+ which I had for 3 years. This is also my first foldable. Pretty much agree with what you said - also to add the performance is rapid and the battery life is better than I was expecting. I easy get through a day using the camera a lot etc. The only things I don't like are the screen does feel (and look in the sun) like plastic to me. Also if you wear polarized sunglasses you can really see its not the same as a normal smartphone screen. But they are far from deal breakers. The Cover Screen is game changing - completely changes how I use my phone, and now I can use it all one handed which is a lot more convenient than you think it would be!

How do you cope with the visible crease at the fold of the phone? I feel like that would bother me while watching KZbin, or Amazon Prime, or any sort of videos. That crease in the inner foldable screen would irritate the hell out of me. $1000 for a phone and the screen is permanently marred.

This seems like a really strange choice if your criteria is toughness and longevity, but good luck. The Fairphone 5 is expected to launch in a few days time, I too keep my phones for quite a long time so personally I'll be getting one of those. Micro SD, replaceable battery, all good things for longevity plus I won't have to be concerned about damaging my screen with just a fingernail.

Well those phones are as tough as other phones. Just see for yourself, some Rog phones that I thought were really strong and bulky, just snapped in half, while a foldable is not, so it does really makes you think. I have a Fold 3 and this thing has absolutely no damage at all in the inside, and when it does, I just replace the screen protector with another one, easy as that.

As a Samsung technician with an affinity for foldables, it will *not* last 4 years. Fold 3 main screens are starting to fail at quite an alarming rate as they cross the 2 year mark. I know some folks still have Fold 2s out in the wild tho so they can last many years but seem unlikely based on the numbers in my repair store

I've been using my z fold 4 for almost 8 months, I bought it second hand and at the beginning I was babysitting it a lot but eventually I lost my fear and started to use it just like any other phone, I even stopped using a case since it makes it bulkier, anyways 3 months ago my biggest fear came to reality, the inner screen protector started to peel and sadly there's no samsung store in my country that can replace them, I thought about getting one on amazon but eventually I said, fuck it and I have been using it without that protector for almost 4 months, and it has lasted wonderfully, the screen doesn't feel as plasticky as it used to and I would say it also looks clearer and brighter, and even better, no scratches thus far. I've definitely lost all the fear I had before getting a folding phone, and whatever my next phone is, it will definitely be another folding phone. There's no turn back after having experienced this.

I think we’ll see a glass - plastic - glass sandwich real soon. Such that most of the screen scratches at a level 7 with deeper groves at level 8, except the part where it folds. It’s hard to do as the glass to plastic transition can’t be chopped. But I think we will have a gradient grass in the future. Be hopeful folks!

I don't really think the large-screen getting scratched is that much of an issue with a flip. considering the phone is folded in your pocket. That's really the best protection you can have. People talking about a hybrid large screen made out of glass? Why? If you don't need it and just adds more weight.
