Putting drives me bananas. I'm an 11 handicap and I don't recognise the stats presented here for my game. I three-putt a lot. Recently I shot 88 with 8 three-putts, 40 putts total. I regularly three-putt 4,5,6 times per round. Tee to green I'm very solid, probably about 5 handicap. If i'm on the practice green I can putt just fine after 5 minutes. I've had lessons and the instructor said he really liked my stroke. It's really the ultimate game within a game. Having said all that, last time out I shot 76 with no three-putts, 29 putts total. Maybe I've turned a corner. 😆

Similar story here. I'm a 15 hcp, and thanks to Shotscope I do know that I win 2.5 strokes in my short game, and then give that advantage away in putting where I'm minus 2.5. LOL. Used to be minus 4. Having said that, I think it's important to understand from which length you struggle most for putt #2. For me it's around 5 feet, which I for me had a lot to do with tension. Anything shorter I am relaxed, Anything longer I have no expectations of holing it (so: also relaxed). Funny enough golf technique didn't solve that, but a breathing trick and speeding up the time between setup and stroke (to stop me from overthinking and cramping up). Made my 4-7 feet make% go up from a measly 35% to 54%. Still I also make too many 3 putts which this new drill will definitely help me improve. Tried it twice now on two different practice greens and it's a keeper!

Great video Coach. I worked this out at the beginning of this season and my putting and scores have got so much better. I watch a lot of golf videos and never really saw (or took in) this method. It only clicked after watching several videos and then actually getting on the practice green. Can't stress enough the importance of practice.

Thanks Coach. Although I think distance plays a role in this as well. i.e. I agree that within 30 ft they should be avoided, but if I'm putting from 60 ft with a couple of undulations (which I had twice recently on a course with a couple of gigantic greens) I am still pretty happy if I get it within 7 of the hole.

Having made that comment from the couch, after giving it a try yesterday, it turns out to be a miracle system! I think it helps that my LAB putter only requires gravity in the downswing. Never got my 30 ft putts so close and so consistent… The 10 footers even started dropping one after the other. Last putting lesson I had made me focus on either intuition or downswing length. This method should be a teaching standard, love it Matt!

I have problems with short putts, especially the dreaded 3-footer when it's not on a flat surface. Any suggestions?

The biggest change to my putting is reducing the length of backswing - massive difference

I am a pretty decent putter. My biggest problem with putting is putting to a steep up slope flag. Think of a multi tier green and putting up to the next tier. Any practice advise for that situation?

Actually I do. I putt better than a pro according to Shot Scopes strokes gained putting numbers in both of the last 2 years. In 2023 I gained .28 against a pro and this year it was .69. Over the last 5 rounds I gained 1.73. That's while not counting rounds played on my home course. I don't record them at all anymore. It throws off the numbers because I know the course too well after playing it over 1200 times in just over 4 years. And most of those rounds are played in skins games where we don't always finish up so recording those rounds just throws everything off. But it's those skins games that made me a better putter. I learned that it's better to not worry about missing and sending it 6-8 feet past the hole. Better to try a ram it into the hole than die it in. You make more when you hit with more speed and take out some of the slopes or grains influence.

Thought I'd add that my putts per green in reg is 1.7 over the past 5 rounds and 1.8 for the year. Again, that only includes games played away. Different course most every week. Only 1 round instead of 4 like a pro would in competition.

It's allmost impossible to find good advice on putting. The ratio between "swing" tips and putting lessons must be 100:1 ig not higher. So thank you for giving us some good putting input. Pun intended
