. In part 2, Pro Mo stops the tee shots and hits from inside 100 yards only. P, the high handicapper will hit all the shots and Mo will come in once the ball gets inside 100 yards. They'll both finish the hole and we'll see how much difference a pro short game makes.

Not only does Pro Mo have a great long game, he is also a Baus inside 100 yards.
You'll notice that it's not merely the game inside 100 that slashes the most strokes, but also the DECISION MAKING.
There are some shots we take on that even a Tour Pro would not take on because the expected result is not favorable and the risk is too high and even if the result came out the best possible outcome, we would still be in trouble.
We need to play safe, conservative golf. There is no other way to play for amateurs. We are imperfect and have very little time to hone our skills like a pro.
best to spend it on the stuff that matters. Short game.
If you cannot get the ball airborne or off the tee, of course the short game won't mean anything to you. You need to see a coach or pro ASAP to even begin playing golf for the first time.
So please let's refrain from using this extreme example of someone who cannot hit a golf ball at all, as a way to refute the ideas of improving your short game for quick gains. Most of the audience will fall into the 80% of people who can hit the ball in the air most shots and play off a handicap between 10 and 30 and using the playa who cannot hit a golf ball, is disingenuous.
Using the example of a person who cannot hit anything more than a wedge or someone who persists in hitting the same club out of bounds on very shot or hitting duffs all the time, and then doesn't bother going for a lesson, does not refute the assertions of the world's greatest thinkers and players. They will all tell you the same thing. It's in the short game. This is where you save strokes. Gary player, Jack Nicholson, Phil Nicholson, Bob Rotella - the greatest minds.
I proved my point in this video, clearly. An 11 stroke difference over 9 holes just from inside 100 and over the full 18 holes, inside 100 yards, or inside wedge distance could save even 15 shots total!. That is including the drops from the water, penalties and doesn't even include the decision making.
Decision making, if it were better, could have slashed another 7 shots off the score easily.
These are two areas we can all be the same as a pro - decisions and short game. We can't all hit huge drives, potent irons or amazing stingers.
But we can all chip and putt like a pro if we practice and learn the fundamentals.
We can also all learn to practice better decision making by THINKING for the first time on the golf course, ever.

It is clear that the game is best tightened up 130 and in. My last two rounds (played with the same ball!) have been stellar. After making some minor changes to my swing path, I knew that any curve would be minimal and keep me on the short grass. I did what Matt has been preaching for some time now and that is to play back from the hole. I did my level best to always have a 110 yard shot to the hole. My playing partners looked at me strangely when I played less than a driver off of a short 4 par. However, the results were pars and a birdie. P's issue is course management. Hero shots are for pro's. Thanks, Matt, for the video.

good concept! but a little unfair because in one way, pro mo gets all the shots inside 100 but in the other, he only hits the tee shots. A better comparison would be all shots until 100 yards rather than just the tee ball. If you read Mark Broadie's book Every Shot Counts, they actually do this experiment and the team with the better long game actually wins quite handily. While not totally comparable, I'd highly suggest reading Every Shot Counts, great read! Thanks for all the vids and advice playa!

One of many experiments to come as I am able to get people in the same place at the same time which is the hard part. but we will keep running these experiments. I have no doubt that any scientific evidence put forth by "authorities" will be driving some profitable agenda. This channel has no interest from manufacturers because I don't push product hard. Showing people a real round is not really unfair, but just the first attempt at making an experiment which can all be fine tuned and made in different variations. Showing people the longer hitters being better off is going to be great for a driver and game improvement iron manufacturer to fund that research!

@@GolfSidekick Long drivers are better off on tour though. They would be better off in the amateur game too if the skills didn't drop off so heavily in approach play and short game. The single most important area of excellence in golf is approach play. Good short game usually saves par (great for amateurs) but good iron play sets up birdie opportunities, which is where it's at for pros.

@@GolfSidekick while I don't think Broadie is pushing anything to sell (hes a prof from columbia) I think his analysis and findings are mainly geared towards pros and therefore might skew his results because as you say, amateurs and pros are wildly different. Good advice. When I just hit enough of a tee shot to get the ball in play, and never try a shot I'm not comfortable with, I shoot in the 80's. When I 'try hard' I hit a few ego-boosting shots and have trouble breaking 100. But sometimes I still feel like going for it, and I give myself leave to do so. It's just a game.

Another excellent vlog Matt with great insights. Thanks to the guys for shooting this too. Classic stuff in there. We've all done the "I've just knobbed my drive 80 yards into the rough. I know, I'm angry and I need to 'make up' for that shot so I'll smash my 5-wood out of 3 inch deep rough. That'll work (not)." Before you know it you"ve knobbed 3 more angry shots, thinned your angry chip through the back of the green and 3-putted. One card wrecked.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
This is the thing that "stats" don't take into account. Yes, bashing it longer but deeper in the rough may be okay on tour but for the average golfer, the anger and frustration intensifies. The very notion of hitting more fairways and being in play from the tee, even with a short ball, is so revolutionary to some guys, it's like they're playing golf for the first time ever instead of aimlessly smashing balls and getting angry. This is something people overlook and until they try it, they'll never know the freedom!

Awesome video, like the others! They say, "putting is for dough!", and this extends to the short game around the green! Experience tells us that there is only so much room for improvement from tee to approach - each (amateur) player has certain distances which dictate the number of shots there. Thus the difference is in chips and putts (and decision making)! My rule of thumb is to split practice time evenly between full shots, chips+pitches and putting. Recording my rounds on my home course, I often see the difference in scores duplicated in the number of putts. That is, when I approach well or putt well, the score drops, while the FW shots stay constant! Paul, senior 14 HCP from Germany

Great video. I've witnessed all these statements I real time and it is true. The short game is the biggest difference between strong golf and inconsistent golf. The driver is a huge help if you can hit fairways and put the ball in a 2nd shot position from the rough. However a 3 wood you can hit 200 to 230 yards with accuracy will get the job done without any problem on a course under 6500 yards. That's what I've observed. Heck you can probably play slightly better then bogey golf using a 5 iron for your drives.

I agree with you about the short game, it is most important, because that is where the scoring happens...BUT... for a beginner golfer I would say to first work on your long game. Try and get it to a point where you can get the ball with 2 shots near the green consistently (1 shot par 3 and 3 shots par 5). When you get to that point, then I would say you should work on your short game as much as you can. Because if you can;t even reach the green, what's the point of having a short game? This is what I feel happened to my game. As soon as I started to reach the green consistently, my short game came into play and I could really improve my score, because I was working on my short game a lot more.

I’m starting to practice chipping with my 9 iron on uphill chips off the green side. I usually use sand wedge and try to carry it to the hole, but it’s much easier to pick a spot on the green close to me and chip with more run. I got that from you. Thanks ! The more I practice the more I learn about which color to use for each block.

Yes playa! When chipping, try use the lowest loft possible, without sacrificing your ability to be ASSERTIVE with the strike
@AdamFerrari64
@AdamFerrari64 5 жыл бұрын
I like that! I don’t worry about duffing it and not making the green, cause I know even if I Land it short of the green it still will run a bit more and I will have a putt. If I hit it too hard it won’t run too far since I have control over the speed since I’m not going as far back in my swing ! With a sand wedge I’d take a bigger backswing and I’d thin/duff more, but with lower loft I make it a simple easy backswing and watch it run to the hole. With uphill/long chips especially lower loft and commitment gets me a makeable putt 10/10!
@AdamFerrari64
@AdamFerrari64 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve also realized that the best thing to do is to leave myself in low stress areas for my chips, or else I blow up my score. For example, on a short par three I got aggressive and went long right over a big hill and I duffed 3 chips coming up the steep hill that I couldn’t get up. I realize that it’s really hard to not smack chips into the hill over and over of that steepness, so I should hit a shot I know that will keep me away from stuff like that 10-10. I’d rather take a bogey instead of put myself in a place where only pros can go up and down sometimes!

It's hard for most low and mid handicappers to remember how bad their short game used to be as their sole focus is getting better. Matt excels at demonstrating convincingly what those differences really are. I just started playing again after 15 years and a bigger focus on the short game has paid off with many mid 80's rounds with a marginal long game. To me picking up shots in the short game is "stealing", ha ha. I enjoy the long game more.

I agree with the premise that short game is a key way to gain tons of strokes for high handicappers. Not questioning that. I wonder what the right short vs. long game test is, though. The skills involved are full swing vs partial shot + putting, so maybe outside 100 vs inside 100? Why the focus on the tee ball only here? Presumably if I'm great off the tee I'm also pretty good from 150/175/200 yards in the fairway.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
There will never be a correct test but the game with a wedge in hand up to in the hole is the easiest for an amateur to get really good at in a certain period of time compared to the other part of the game in the same time. It is a very neglected part of the game. Regardless of how any experiment is set up, there will always be a different way or ‘better’ way of doing it. But in this specific one, even with waterballs and wayward shots, it came out 11 better

Interested in thoughts - I typically will give advice to buddies of mine that within 100 yards, the game really comes down to "feel". Now obviously, I know technique carries significant weight in your level of comfort within a short distance, but what does everyone else think? How do you truly get comfortable within 100 yards from the pin?
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
First go to the range or on course and find that club that works for you I mean, for me, the best way would be, hit the 58° "full" - maybe 20 shots. What's the number that comes up the most? Around 70 yards? Great use that from 70 Then hit the 54° and see how that goes. 85 yards? Great now you have 2 clubs inside 100. How about the PW? 100 yards? Great an arsenal of 3 shots. No feel, just fullish shots. Then move onto a half shot. you need to remember the feeling of this half shot and groove it in. Waht's the distance on the 58 and the 54? 58° maybe 45 yards? 54° maybe 60 yards? Now we cover 45, 60, 70, 85 and 100 yards. That's plenty arsenal and only 2 swings with 3 clubs. Full swing, half swing. Chipping and putting, that's about finding your chipping clubs and starting to hit spots on the green from around the green. Don't worry about that hole, just get the feel by practicing hitting a spot on the green. Then when you get confident, start trying to use lower and lower loft. There are two techniques in my chipping video and also my hour of power putting video. This game inside 100 doesn;t have to be a mystery. Most people just dont do it because it's the unknown. A lesson can also help!

Never seen any high handicapper chip and putt like a pro and you never will, but better course management is definitely where shots can be saved.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
The very idea that a high handicapper cant have a short game like a pro is exactly the type of opinion that is holding people back. It is the only area in the entire game literally every person can be as good as a pro. By the very nature of getting a short game like a pro, your handicap will drop thereby moving anyone from a high handicap to a low handicap.
@petermartinaitis8166
@petermartinaitis8166 5 жыл бұрын
@@GolfSidekick The reason why a high handicapper cannot have a game like a pro is because they do not possess the technique and skill a pro has. There is no doubt anyone can improve their short game but it is dependent on many things and time is one of the biggest factors. A pro spends hours every day practicing with excellent facilities. Most club golfers do not have the same amount of free time because of work and family commitments etc. It's got nothing to do with being negative it's about being realistic and to tell club golfers otherwise is misleading.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
@@petermartinaitis8166 Quickest wins come from the short game and anything inside 100 is perfectly achievable. I do not have the word REALISTIC in my vocabulary. Misleading is telling people they will never have a short game like a pro when it's in fact the ONLY area we can all be as good as pros because it does not require anything other than a tchnique and practice. no working out, millions of balls to hit closer approaches, no learning to hit a 9 degree club face. You can practice the short game anywhere even indoors. To be 'realistic' is basically to deny the possibility of most things - whereas I see the potential to do otherwise.

Everything inside 100 yards is too much. At that distance you are including recovery shots, full wedges, half wedges, bunker, chips, and putts. That's just not a good comparison as you are including essentially every aspect of the game besides driving. If the question is driving or everything else, then obviously everything else will win. If the question is driving or any other single aspect, driving wins every time. The statistics are extremely clear on this.
@GolfSidekick

Where are the stats? Show me the extremely clear stats. Because I only ever get assertions from people who claim stats are clear in a very religious zealot way. So I have a lot of critiques of this experiment and thusly the conclusions you're getting from it, BUT, P is the textbook example of somebody who would benefit from WOTP. He hits the ball very well, much better than me (and I'm an 11), but he putts like garbage and is an awful decision maker. CLEARLY somebody in the need of the WOTP. THat doesn't mean all this is universal though, I'm the opposite (My long irons are reliable much less often than my driver, but I can't square the driver up enough to compete with any pro in distance, and it's very obvious to the eye or with my stat tracking systems that the full swing is where my next steps in improvement can come from). Of course, I'm the opposite because I've worked hard on putting and chipping over the last two years, spending about as much time on that as on full swing, so I've improved quickly there. But there's diminishing returns.
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 5 жыл бұрын
There was no agenda with this experiment and expected the longer tee shots to help more than the putting and chipping. But it will take a lot of them to make any conclusions, with many levels of playas and tweaking some variables like maybe Mo needs to hit the shots from 150-100 yards only. Maybe Mo could play all shots except short game. Many ways to go about it and we will need many more amateurs to help out My main point is to shave strokes QUICK and start having fun again, short game is the key. Yes, then you need to put in the grind of trying to get better on the longer game which takes months and years. I say focus the energy on the quick wins first so that you can enjoy golf and stay the course instead of giving up by wasting time trying to hit it close like a pro. The #1 in proximity to the hole on the PGA Tour is something like 30 feet to the hole. That's hitting balls every day all day.
@adamseidel9780
@adamseidel9780 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m definitely not accusing you of an agenda, just the experiment design being a bit off (you mentioned how I’d improve it, basically you have a larger portion of the game for one nine than the other, and the results are also heavily dependent on the handicap golfer you pair Mo with. If you did this same thing with me vs my bud who is my same handicap, you’d get totally opposite results).
