#facts. I love how he said, he decided to study Russian for 1.5 years and then go to russia. I love how he did not think about what level he would have achieved by then. I personally believe that that is great cuz most of the time, we don't see progress cuz we haven't stuck onto something for long enough and if we did, we would progress. I personally always use this strategy when I am starting a new activity. I just tell myself to stick to it without evaluating myself for a particular amount of time, usually 6 months and then after that when I have developed a new habit, I start tryna improve and evaluate it.

I think I will wait to output (speaking) when I understand almost everything in japanese (listening is where I lack the most), bc when u understand the language, it will be easier to speak it, I did the same with English, I can speak a lot, sometimes I may mispronounced something but I work everyday on it, the same japanese.

Definitely. Every strategy helps. When I was learning German, Listening and writing were like 60% of my learning and reading was about 35%. Speaking was only 5% but today I give powerpoint presentations to my boss in German about mechanical engineering stuff. When learning Chinese, I speaking and reading were like 70% of my language learning from the start and today, I can also communicate very well with natives. Both techniques work

To be honest, I need to work more on my grammar in my second language. This is the most frustating part in learning a foreign language. After so much time in reading, listening, writing, this should come more naturally to me without having spending a lot of time on memorizing grammer. If I dont like grammer, then I wont waste my time on it at the moment. The #1 reason people quit learning a foreign language, is they try to learn grammer at the beginning level. I do feel like my second language is improving because some of it is coming out more naturally.

😭😭This is exaclty the video I needed, I swear. I've been going to this mild existential crisis while learning Chinese, where I just feel huge amounts of dread looking at this mount everest of stuff I still absolutely have no clue about, and feeling like someone gave me an axe and told me "yeah. Your goal is to flaten this mountain" Also there's this intense amount of guilt I feel when looking at languages other than Chinese? I really have to work on that. Ugh.

I mean reading is all fun and games, but what if you can't read?! Cuz the damn charakter don't tell you how to peonounce them? So whenever you see a new character without hearing it or you hear a new word without seeing the character... I feel like it's double the work somehow😭😭 And then I look at other languages and they can just read texts out loud without understanding the meaning behind the words because those languages have alphabets, and I get soooo jealous😭😭😭 Sorry for this rant😂😂

Hey, as a half Chinese and half French, I think you have to ( for me) the best way to improve your Chinese is to take your time. For example, before, I can just speak but I can't write... Now every day I learn almost 15 vocabularies and ask myself why this character is written like this, the pronunciation...etc. The result is I can read in my language!. Same for English, I practice a lot: reading, writing, listening, speaking. I'm confident with myself when I speak to foreigners :))

Wow, that Spanish in the beginning is really advanced! I had gotten the false impression that you had dabbled in Spanish, Lindie, but when I heard the intro I wouldn't have put it past you to do the full talk in Spanish, good work! I really like those conversational videos and I would like to thank you, Mark and Lindie, for putting such information online. Before discovering Lindie's channel I had the impression that no one feels like me about languages as my environment suggested that. I very much appreciate such cooperation in those videos when two polyglots compare notes/feelings about progress... After all, many people see the prodigy factor, but forget the feelings behind language learning. Your videos have even given me terms to talk about things I had been doing without being able to put a name on them (e.g. language stacking). A true inspiration and motivation!

I think BLACK PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCE, will be more of a challenge, to put it realistically. I have met people who ignored me or looked at me in disgust. My advice to POC(*and those this will apply to: 1.learn for the love of learning 2. Speak from the heart 3. Learn race related lingo and terms 4. Out with the bad people, in with the good 5. Meet the next person with an open mind. 6. Persevere Despite everything, I have met good people, who were very encouraging. ❤😌I still visit and always leave big tips$ at their place of business.

This is very true. When I was in South Korea, had a very interesting conversation was an 아저씨 about being Black and learning their language. His take was positive, and he was impressed with my level and accent, but it really helps to do your homework. The romantic view of the language and the culture can instead be a more mature appreciation of the culture if you realize the good with the bad.

Thanks a lot for tips in language learning. As I native speaker, I always find it very surprising when someone decides to learn Russian. I love my language, truly, but don't know why I have this feeling that Russian isn't among the most popular languages to learn. About mistakes... every one makes them. Even in a native language. That's pretty normal. Question is - if other people understand you. I am happy that my husband speaks my native language as I speak his. We do make a lot of mistakee and so what? There are no problems with understanding each other - that's the main idea. By the way, enjoyed beginning of the video in Spanish, which my target language for now. Good luck!

Maybe it's because Russia is one of the only countries where Russian is spoken... So you really have to like Russia or else you're not gonna want to study it probably. Also it's in another alphabet so it's hard. But that makes it of course not unsatisfying to study it (idk I don't study it honestly)

Tienes razón Irina, el español es mi lengua materna y aún así, cometo errores algunas veces, esto es normal, hay que estar en paz con los errores y abrazar la experiencia de fallar en nuestro aprendizaje de idiomas, yo hablo nueve idiomas aunque mi meta básica es de hablar doce. El speaking skill es como cualquier otra habilidad, así que para mi hay que empezar desde el día 1 a hablar. No importa si son palabras sueltas u oraciones cortas, lo importante es que estás practicando la pronunciación por un lado, y por otro, generando confianza al hacerlo. Esperar a hablar es como decir que voy a esperar cierto tiempo para desarrollar el listening or writing por ejemplo. Saludos Lindie!

Great conversation. I was nodding along at everything I could relate to. After finding Dreaming Spanish thanks to you Lindy, I really went down the comprehensible input rabbit hole. It makes so much sense. But on a practical level, I feel like I'm restricting myself for several hundred hours I like how speaking makes me feel but I don't want to develop bad habits such as translating (which I do a lot in French). I agree with going with what's natural up to a certain degree, but we humans are also our own worst enemies. I don't naturally gravitate to training my ears to the language. I find it a chore, yet I know from experience of not doing it early enough with French that it's KEY. How do you balance going with the flow with forcing yourself to do stuff that isn't naturally attractive?

personally, i balanced those first few months with also doing some more dopamine inducing things on the side. Listening to me was a chore because i couldn't understand, and specially so watching shows i liked, because if i liked the premise i wanted to understand it!! but i just kept up the habit of making listening a big part of my lenguage learning, and reminding myself i don't have to understand. On the side i did some pod101 lessons which helped with the dopamine, because even if i wouldn't internalize the points immediately, it felt like i did something and i could understand something. Maybe also playing a lenguage learning game (basically) app like duolingo and such would help give you a bit of a reward after the grind of listening xDD Reading helped me also, i kept it at a much lower rate to listening but reading was the only way i learnt new vocabulary and the more i did it the more i started to understand the grammar as well which felt great. After a while without noticing i could understand the bare bones of what people said when listening, and it wasn't as exhausting. It's been like 7 months now and i can understand so much more in my target lenguage when listening! is not even exhausting anymore. I spend most of my time and consume most of my content in my target lenguage, and even if i don't understand everythign it feels natural for me now. It gets easier, just gotta grind a bit at first :D so yeah tl;dr try to build the habit at first even if you dread it and do something more rewarding and comprehensible and less exhausting for your brain on the side until you can do it without getting tired xDDD is my advice. Also, i believe that if you speak or write a bit early on because is what helps give you motivation, i think you should totally do it. Ideally much much less than you would get input only, but in any case the few bad habits you might get are completely worth it if it means otherwise you drop the lenguage imo!! a not completely effective method is better than no method at all! Sorry for the wall of text :P

Learning a language is really a trial where you have to train yourself to be more mindful of your achievements and be okay with the hardships. I have so many ups and downs where sometimes I will feel great about what I've learned so far, and the very next day I will feel completely hopeless and feel like my head is a colander where I miss every piece of information (not to mention the words or grammar structures that I should have known until now and that I'm still forgeting about). I'm trying to fight this other inner self which wants me to believe that I'm a failure. Making the effort to learn something instead of just being on social medias scrolling mindlessly is already a huge thing on its own, and trying to make it through even when it feels really hard is even more respectable ! Thank you Lindie for always making such great content that helps us language learners reignite our love for it. And thank you Mark for making such important observations too ! :)

How nice that you speak Hungarian. You know, Mark's maternal great-grandparents came here from Hungary in the very early 1900s. My mother spoke Hungarian with her mother, yet we were not taught .( I am the youngest of 10 girls and one boy ) They would say....You're American. I know a few phrases. I studied Spanish and became a certified teacher. Also I have studied a little French, Italian and Poruguese. I think that Hungarian would be a nice language for my son to learn as well. Why are you studying Hungarian may I ask? I am so proud of my son. His father was a lover of foreign languages as well...xoxo. nice interview

It's so true what you said "expose yourself to the language and native speakers early on in the process" in my own experience learning English. When I first started I had just dabbled in it and did not take it seriously as I did later on. In the first month, I was already exposed to native content and it helped me a lot. My English has improved a lot in the 7 months that I've been learning it. I'd highly recommend you to try to immerse yourself as much as you can since the first beginning it'll help you to realize things much quicker and get a better understanding of how actually the language works to later on go building up your skills. Plus celebrate small wins even if you know a language poorly, it is awesome! IMHO language is the best thing worth knowing as one of my favorite quotes says "One should not aim at being possible to understand but at being impossible to misunderstand" PSD: I love your content Lindie, you are incredible
