Having kids out of FEAR is the worst reason to have them. If you have fear of being alone in your older years, just know that having kids doesn't guarrantee you won't be alone and even dying alone. Have kids out of an abundance of love, not fear.

If you gonna have kids, you better have them sooner. There's no joy in having sleepless nights in your 40s chasing neonates. Remember, in your 40s, you will ba at the climax of your career and won't be able to afford time to juggling a kid and a job.

@@Lyuba999 LOL, kids or no kids, money or no money , growing old sucks . You have to cope with your deteriorating body and mind. Having money does help though. Having really good kids would help but that is rare these days. Being wealthy and having great kids to manage your wealth would be best of all , but few of us can attain that.

Fascinating discussion. I love kids but have never felt a strong pull to have my own. To my mind, it's not something to go into half-heartedly as it's too important a decision. Having now seen how much turmoil the world is currently in, I'm feeling quite grateful that I never went down the path of parenthood as I tend to be an obsessive worrier even at the best of times. Thank you for shining a light on an important topic such as this.

That's sad. Hope you find a better world. Our world has been chaotic since the beginning of time. In my early twenties, I was worried about having children for the same reasons. Once I hurt Heaven and Hell exists when you're old. Then I asked myself,,,,, in my last 10 or 20 years of my life when I'm old. When every friends and family members around me are dead, I'm the only one left on a bed. Will I be in hell? Or seeing a part of my little life in a young body, smiling, crying and laughing,,,,, is heaven? After having two kids. I live a better, more chaotic, colorful and happier world now. Yes, it's sad because your comment reminds me of my cold and dark days. So I understand.

Great to see such an important topic being discussed. I know of some people who weren't particularly interested in having kids but panic breed as they approach the end of their thirties and as they reach their forties. Citing reasons of FOMO or having someone to look after them in their old age. These have never struck me as the right reasons for having children.

Then to have kids and find out they were missing out on stress and sleep deprivation, just as they are reaching middle age when the body is telling you to slow down and get proper rest. It's too late at that point, and they realize this is their new lot in life until they are nearly 60 years old.

I am never in a relationship, let alone in a marriage. I would have had kids, but I never met a man who wanted me. I'd prefer to have no kids that a kid with a man who half wanted me, because my future would have been: divorce/separation, custody stress, single motherhood, poverty and a child without a mum and dad working together as a team. So, what I see is:- people having kids for themselves and others without thinking about the child itself.
@TL-ch1xd
@TL-ch1xd 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, and looking at the divorce statistics and the reality of parenthood (which is much like managing logistics and a corporation - and for most a constant time and money struggle) is that it’s more common than uncommon for children to grow up without parents who display healthy and mature love between themselves. Many grow up with single parents, in stepfamilies or with parents in a loveless/unhappy marriage. How are the young ones going to grow up and build themselves something more healthy and happy if that is the way shown to them as how to live? We have so many children on this planet already, that I believe it is quite selfish to reproduce, to be honest. If one wants a family with children to raise so badly, society and those people should focus more on the children who already are here and in need of care.

Hmm what I would add is that thinking about the child is loving the child, in practice, not in hypotheticals. Because love is good. So what I will say for myself is that I don't know if I will have children, but, if I do, I will do my best to love them with all my heart. Not because I want them to take care of me when I'm old, no nothing like that. It's because I want to be the best I can be, and to do good to teach the kids how to do good, so that at least they have the seeds to do good and be good and to love when I'm gone. That's sufficient. That's my take anyway.

It's a gamble either way. You don't know truly how you're going to feel about being a parent until you are one. If you choose not to have kids, once you hit a certain age (at least for women), biology takes the choice off the table to have bio kids and that can feel a little odd and doubt inducing. Even if you otherwise really appreciate your life, there will be moments when you wonder what life on the path not taken would have been like and that's okay. All we can do is try to make the wisest choices for ourselves, and accept that choosing one path sometimes closes off others.

It's no one else's business for you to have kids. If I had it to do again, I would stay child-free. Not only did I almost die from pre-eclampsia (women still die from childbirth), there is no way I would bring an innocent life in this world to suffer and die; it's immoral. Of course I was taught the opposite via religion back in the 70's, though there is no way I would do it, today. I had one son and no other children, and it ruined my life. It was no fault of his own of course, though it was horrific for him also; his dad whom I had to leave twice and finally divorce, tried to destroy us both. This world is too cruel. I am 64.

I think this idea of having children being only about fulfillment in a general sense is wrong. Many different things fulfill me in different ways. So while I love my job and I love ministry and I love the children I do have I also want to be married. These things are mutually exclusive and while the rest of those things may be going great, i would still desire that. All of those are interchangeable and there is also more that i find fulfilling. Also, I feel as though while it was not the end all be all, that Lisa wants at least one kid for that experience and also as another page of her relationship with Tom that she wants to venture into, amongst potential other things. If you want kids and you plan to be and stay healthy, I would still say do it sooner if your life permits. People think being young and living free of children is going to let them have more fun. I'm 27 and I have heard that a ton(more or less) but unless your are very financially successful now, all you are setting yourself up for is having children in school/college while you are in the sweet spot of having the most money(given that your career has over time brought you more money) and still being very able bodied. have kids at 20 and they graduate high school when you are 38(this is just an example) you have plenty of money and now you can take real vacations. You aren't saving for a college fund or a home and your career has reached it's peak(or close to it unless you run your own business and aren't capped somewhere) and if you are healthy(which they said they feel better and stronger than ever or something like that) then you are gonna ball out. Or travel and stuff until you are 35. Then have a kid and they graduate high school when you are 53 and while you are making plenty of money you are almost a senior citizen at the point that the kids aren't necessarily the primary concern. Now assuming both people live to be 100 and that you will still be able to vacation and do fun things while you have children while you are young, starting earlier makes more sense to me, once again assuming that life permits( financially, biologically, and relationally) This is just my perspective

Wow that’s exactly my thoughts that if smth happens I would not want kids instead of my husband because this is never a replacement but no one understands me and accepts my decision. I am 33 and happily married. But my husband sometimes speaks about kids and I can’t figure out if it is his natural desire or desire of his mother translated to him in that way, or a social contract. As for me, I am so scared to loose myself in this battle and to not be able to recognise one day my own thoughts about this topic and the thoughts of relatives and society. It is such a pressure to live like that. Moreover i don’t even have a good explanation and reason that my relatives could accept as an argument for not having that desire to have kids as I don’t have a successful job or career. But I am very much introverted person, I would say a bit egoistical, and I love self development through my hobbies, travel reading, and I want to explore all these exceptionally with myself or my husband. I don’t want other people in the house even if they are nice kids growing into adults one day which scares me to death. Maybe I have a kind of childhood trauma, I don’t know why I am like that. Any advice or help is much appreciated

I love you guys both, I've seen all impact theory episodes and I've seen all you relationship theories. As somebody from the outside watching, it looks like Lisa wants kids and Tom is using an arsenal of speaking techniques to talk her out of it. Now, like I said, I'm an outsider looking in and my impression might be all BS. But after watching this couple for such a long time and seeing their interactions on camera, it somewhat feels like she still hasn't given up on that dream to become a mother. However, he seems adamant and remains unimpressed. And, on top, I get the feeling that he's deep down very upset about this topic as he appears to be working extra hard to push all kinds of opinions on Lisa. Like a salesman or maybe more like a robot, repeating the same phrases over and over again.... Anyway, might all be BS as we are the audience and don't know what is really happening behind closed doors. I wish them well and hope they have it all figured out!

My wife wanted to have kids but I don't. So, I just gave it to her. I made her two kids. She is the happiest mother and wife. So, if you don't want now, it doesn't mean that it won't be changed. Now you don't want, but tomorrow you want. Nothing lasts forever Having kids is better in any logical sense, I want to smoke a cigar with my son and drink wine with my daughter. Difference between 25 years old parents and 35 years old parents. At 25, you can sacrifice sleep, still work hard and still be active with family. Well in 35, everything else is maybe harder but I have seen people in their late 30s Being Fit and raising family while running their business. But it's rare. Come to think of it, most of the Rich and successful people I know has children. What is life without giving a life?

@@bling0rb007 No difference. We'll both be dead. I won't care about the fifth generation after me one bit. And I doubt that generation will care much about me past possibly knowing my name. Genetically they will only have about 6.25% of my genes and I'll be one of thirty ancestors that they'll have at that point. It's my opinion and it could be crap, but having kids just so in a hundred or so years there's a smidgen of your genetics and someone might know your name is a pretty bad reason for having kids.

Majority of Woman naturally want to be mothers, even if it’s for fulfillment or just plain ol’ biology, woman were created to procreate, and it’s obvious that Lisa would love to have her husbands children but what puzzles me is him trying to talk her out of something that she would possibly want one day. Sucks. But Maybe he’ll come around and think about his wife & how leaving a piece of himself to still be here on this earth with his wife & family would look, If he was to actually pass away first.

@@chantalreneehayles7976 outside of fatality (which is extremely uncommon today), I have yet to meet a mother who regrets the decision to give birth. Few things in life (maybe nothing) will give you the joy and fulfillment that a son or daughter can provide. Watching them grow and flourish gives life purpose and meaning. Plus it’s so much fun! The only true downside to kids is that they are incredibly expensive. Like way expensive. I could have bought a Ferrari by now. Lol.

Nicool333 it’s not just the giving birth or raising the kids after. It’s the being pregnant/post parfum part as well, which lasts for way longer than nine months total. Not everyone wants to go through with that process. As you quite literally don’t know how your body is going to handle it. Even from pregnancy to pregnancy for a single individual can vary. Some women have conditions during pregnancy that makes them feel itchy literally everyday for month, which can be very painful and lead to infection. Or find it impossible to keep food down and throw up everyday multiple times a day, leading to hospitalization. Not everyone wants to take those risks of that happening to them.
