After many hours and many hunts, it is time for our final preview of Monster Hunter Wilds ahead of its February 28 release date. Find out what we think of Capcom's highly anticipated co-op sequel so far. Previewed by Casey DeFreitas
Recordings of Monster Hunter Wilds were taken from an in-development version of the game. Contents may differ in the product version. The build used for this gameplay also does not reflect some of the adjustments that were discussed in the December Community Update video (and was played before the update was published.)
Specifically, we’d like to note that the bow’s Focus Strike targeting will work differently in the final version of Monster Hunter Wilds.

When it was announced that Casey DeFreitas was going to cover Wilds, I didn't know who she was, so I did a quick search on her. The first result was a 6 year old Reddit post complaining about how she was always talking about Monster Hunter. Then I knew she was the right one.

IGN did so good letting her do this review or video. She's a true Hunter and I think they should allow those most passionate about a series or type of game to cover that type of game! This video was amazing to watch and refreshing to hear a true MH fan talk about the game like this. She's so right about us evolving as hunters too.

When WORLD released I had just moved back to my home state across the country after a pretty rough break up where I was cheated on, I had to completely start over I lost pretty much everything. I was lucky enough to have a friend who let me stay with them til I got back on my feet, found a job a few weeks later. For 3 months straight I would hustle all day at work and go back "home" to play MH. It was my escape, my therapy, my outlet for those really rough few months. It's been seven years since then, I'm typing this now from my gaming room desk in the house I bought in 2023. Eh if Rockstar does go through with 100 dollar standard editions and it gets GOTY then we as the gaming community have no reason to pitch about the garbage games we have been getting through the AAA market because 100 dollars for any standard game is outright garbage and I won't be buying it. MHW on the other hand will i have no doubt again give me 1000's of hours of play for 70 up front and a plethora of free content plus a paid for expansion so MHW wins in my book.

Love it. Monster Hunter game design over the last 20 years has been a slow, but steady, progression of trying to make the hunter's life easier without significantly diminishing the challenge of the hunt. World was huge step up from the DS titles, and those where a step up from the PSP titles. Not to also get all "back in my day", but I used to really mess my hand up playing the PSP titles with the Monster Hunter Claw grip style. Getting to play on an ergonomically designed control was heaven compared to that.

My problem with the ancient forest was more on how the paths were hard to spot (some needed you to jump through vines or climb up trees) and the minimap was super confusing with very thin paths criss-crossing. Wilds deals with half of this problem by implementing the 3D map you can rotate; and your raptor pathfinds to the monster automatically. We'll have to wait to see though.

Two things can be true, the game has gotten easier and you have gotten better as a player. These two overlaps to make the experience unlike that of the older games, so challenge in MH is a very hard thing to dispute. At this point, if you're a veteran from the older games, you should not expect a challenge until maybe the last few TUs, in both the base game and the G-rank version.
@lilfuzzballa
@lilfuzzballa 8 күн бұрын
And considering that it's easier, how much credit to how easy it is goes to us just being better and how much credit goes to the game just being less janky and streamlined? And in terms of the jankiness of classic games, getting rid of that jankiness does indeed make the games easier to some degree, but it's a valuable tradeoff. I love the feel of current MH games compared to old ones, and if that means a slight tradeoff is making it a bit easier I'm ok with that. From there, all they need to do is make the monsters themselves harder, which we are all aware they know how to do. But it seems that Capcom doesn't really start to deliver that challenge that veterans are looking for until you reach Elder tier monsters in the end game, and of course Title Update monsters.

2:31 I agree with this so much! A lot of people say that Rise (or World to some extent) was too easy, but I started playing Monster Hunter with Rise, and I kept getting handed by early game monsters like Arzuros and Aknosom when I first played, but the more I played the game, the better I got. It's not getting easier, we're just getting better at the games

i pretty much had no issues with rise, mostly auto piloting through the monsters, played world and needed to pay attention more, there was more tension and danger. then played gu and there were lowrank monsters that were giving me trouble. there is no merit to the idea that mh is the same difficulty, it is drastically easier after each installment, and wilds will be even easier. the new moves weapons have are pretty much a win button like wirebugs were. there is no universe where you can say a game that lets you press one combo over and over and destroy the monster is the same difficulty as world and you just "are better at the game" and theres no reason to pretend otherwise, this is some weird propaganda people are pushing

We certainly become better at the game but generally speaking new gen is a way easier than old gen. Not just for quality of life but the level of the quests itself and monster stats. It’s not that difficult in new gen to topple a monster and create a long opening for you to beat them, while in the old gen monsters hardly toppled and even when they were down it was for a couple of second. In mhgu you have Shagaru Magala Advanced in low rank in the village which means you had to do it by yourself, not to mention Deviants and EX monsters. There is no such a challenge in the new gen. Sunbreak was hard enough in the endgame but on World everything was pretty much a walk in the fields. Anyway this is not just Monster Hunter but the videogame industry as a whole, going towards a simplification of the games in order to gain more accessibility, where more accessibility means more customers and money.

@@Kittysune12 The issue to me wasn't that Rise was easier (all the games are going to be easier for those with prior Monster Hunter experience), but rather WHY it was easier. I think for example that if World had allowed the player to have the pre-nerf Temporal Mantle from the getgo instead of making it an endgame reward, it would be similar to Rise's wirefall and palamute combo.

I love her remark about accepting what Monster Hunter is and that we have become better hunters; not that the games have become easier. I've been playing since Freedom and too often than not other older hunters who've played just as long use that as a bar of measure and as a means to subtlety gate keep. I understand that change can be scary but QoL only helps the experience and that's okay. Let's just all keep hunting and having fun and teaching new hunters in the ways we were once upon a time! ✨️

So you honestly think as veterans get more experienced, that doesn't have a significant impact on MH games getting easier over time? Do you suggest they take that into account and just pander specifically to veteran players by making MH harder and harder and harder with every new title? At that point you are just walling off new players as MH games end up being too difficult for them at a certain point.

5:08 I honestly don't mind doing it. I'm one of those players who just runs around for five minutes at the beginning of every hunt, casing the environment of every item I can find. To the extent that I immediately have to go back and drop my hoard off. I do think it became tedious in the early titles due to the lower number of collection points there were. I'd be going around, trying to get stuff to make potions, bombs, and traps, and it would take forever because you had to find the collection point and then suck off RNGesus to get the item you needed.

Even if we get better as players, there still needs to be some more friction and hard monsters that give you a bigger objective. I say this because Fatalis in World was the most amazing hunt ever in MH. Because it was ruthless and needed good coordination, almost like a raid in an MMO. And that is fun.
@shinycaseyd
@shinycaseyd 8 күн бұрын
Yep I agree, Monster Hunter really shines the most when there's a challenge you need to work at to overcome. I think with Wilds, the devs wanted to make sure players didn't drop off in the early game, so they made to sure to order the monsters in a way that would help new players learn the skills they need in a more streamlined way without sudden roadblocks. I think we will get difficult monsters in Wilds, just not as early as in some other Monster Hunters.
