To add to this: if you’re willing to pay a slight premium for OEM parts, audi now has a program/business called Audi Tradition, which is low-key sort of similar to Porsche Classic, just not quite as extensive. It basically makes all of the old parts for our beloved older Audi’s (10 yrs old from now) available, brand new.

Even if he had a low-mileage B7 RS4 with no issues whatsoever, his rationale still stands. If you're okay buying a car that has almost no OEM parts availability, then go ahead and enjoy the very special car that is the B7 RS4. If however you prefer to own a car that can be repaired when faults arise, rather than have the possibility it might be off the road for an indeterminate period while you search the globe for unicorn components (costing you gold, frankincense and myrrh), then choose the B5 S4 instead. Both are very special cars in their own unique ways. Both have their problems but both have passionate, cult-like followers. Also, if there's the slightest possibility you might want to tune whichever one you buy, then the B5 is definitely the one to have. The B5 S4 is capable of delivering performance that a B7 RS4 would need six figures throwing at it to match.

I've had a B7 RS4 for about 6 years now from 98k to 144k. I've had to deal with some of the typical things. Throttle body: easy DIY with the GM/Pierburg replacement instead of OEM Audi. Coil packs, tune-up. Carbon clean. Expansion tank. 2ndary oil cooler rusted couplers. My DRC just gave out so I've put the car in storage on a tender for a bit while I decide what to do and got a 957 turbo as my daily. I think the RS4 will become a summer and weekend car from here out. I haven't minded spending the money on it bc it really is special. It's a future classic in the way a B5 S4 will never measure up to. The intake and exhaust sounds can't help but make you smile. For DRC I've just discovered the Koni option from CRS in UK, and will probably go that route. Eventually there might be something that requires an engine-out. That all scares me a little bit cost-wise, but I just can't part with it. The car has aged extremely well, looks fantastic for 15 years old. The build quality inside is as good most current luxury cars on the road. There are faster cars now, but the driver experience incredible still. So why not spend some money to keep it? Ask me again when the $10k engine-out job comes along, but I think spending the $10k on a classic that ages well is the way to go. To buy something newer that is as exciting to drive and feels as "special" I'd have to spend a lot more money than that. I think you made a good point about aftermarket mods for the two models. The B5 is more mod-friendly with more options. I'm a very keep-it-stock person so that's not a concern of mine.

I agree with you on most points. My brother had a 2001.5 B5 S4 new and that thing was great. Funny how he lived in Brookline, MA (From CA) and his headlights kept getting stolen. He ended up selling it because it got annoying. It was a fun car to drive, but the gearbox was a bit rubbery. He also got a Neuspeed exhaust and chip which was fun. I owned a B7 RS4 for about 7 years. The gearbox on that was way more crisp. It was definitely a money pit: Carbon cleaning, replaced the intake manifold, had a stalling issue (because 034 Motorsports replaced my high pressure fuel sensor with a non-OEM part), replaced the high pressure fuel pumps, and the guy I sold it to had the rear main seal start to leak after he drove it home to LA. I loved that car so much though. The clutch was great and I never had any issues with it. I owned it from about 76K to 144K. I put the KWV3 set on it and a StopTech trophy BBK on it with steel braided lines and slotted rotors. I was encouraged to sell it by my friend and mechanic at Sonnen Audi. He just said eventually I’d have to do an “engine-out” service which would run $10K+. So I reluctantly sold it and have definitely missed it. I bought a new F80 M3 about 5 years ago and while it is way faster, it’s missing some of the character of the B7 RS4. Those Audi 4.2’s are great, but they’re wedged in there so it gets real expensive fast. Like you said, parts are expensive and hard to find. Not to mention the timing chain and guides could go bad too. I had that timing chain rattle on my B6 S4 which I bought brand new and sold at about 165K miles. I will say that car was trouble free in the 8 plus years I owned it! I sold it cheap, because the timing chain would rattle on cold start and I didn’t want to deal with replacing the guides. I enjoyed your videos! I still like the B5 S4 too. I miss my brother’s clean example of that.

I'm within a week away from pulling the trigger on a B7 RS4 with 77k miles on it and was feeling pretty good tbh. I looked around and did my research and aside from the suspension which seems common with most older audis (just throw on coilovers), carbon cleaning (shorter intervals but still a DI thing we're all used to), intake flaps (remove when you carbon clean), and expensive consumables like rotors and brakes and in the case of this car.... control arms lol. I thought I knew what I was getting into. It's funny how ONE video can make me seriously doubt the decision until I realized that your vehicle has 3x the miles as the one i'm looking at. Given i'll be very likely putting less than 10k miles per year on this thing... i'm hoping I don't regret it lol I've literally heard nothing but negative things with regards to reliability when it comes to the b5... unsure as to why it's suddenly preferred over arguably the best Audi sedan of all time tbh. I guess it's mostly because it's easier to fix but I think they would break much more often. Granted with 300k miles on the clock I imagine everything has been or will need to be replaced.

If you want a project car that's really rewarding, any forced induction Audi is a better option than a B7 RS4. The B7 RS4 stock has already virtually extracted most of the performance the platform/engine has to offer. If you got an RS4 with wingbacks, flat bottom wheel, and carbon ceramics... the only performance mods you have left are piggies/dps, a catback exhaust, a tune, and a set of quality coilovers. You'll get a couple of extra HPs and better handling, but that's it. Then you get to a point where you need to dump 10-15k into it if you're interested in forced induction, and once you do, that money is lost, it's no longer a collectible car. With a B5 S4 or even a B8 S4, you get a car that's much more rewarding from a tuning standpoint. You start at 250hp/333hp, and you can almost double the power without having to spend 15k on it. Also like you mentioned, S4's aren't really collectible cars so it's not like you're ruining the value of a super limited production model when you mod it -- in most cases you're actually bringing it back from the dead.

@@mileageponroadwell you needs a lil more $ to maintain 4.2 yet alone boost one... parts are Def Available... ya just cant afford the maintenence bill that's all there is to it if you have to make lifetime decisions

This is so true, my b5.5 2.8 was so good. Ended up getting a b7 2.0 6spd. Such a turd, the balance shaft problem got me

I love the B5 (RS4) but I loved my B7 RS4 Avant and love my current B8.5 RS4 Avant. Totally different to the B5 but the engine on the 7/8.5s are incredible.

Mature as in age? Lol
@mousiee72 жыл бұрын
@IgnitionTube Age and mind. The price point likely keeps it that way. Lol I like the B5 S4, but to your point, it looks just like any B5 A4. Also, the B7 was the last V8 S4/RS4.

There is no reason to even look at the RS4 given all the constraints mentioned! In addition, twin turbos are much more satisfying to drive. I have driven many RS4 s and they are under whelming !

Had a Casablanca White B5 back in 2014 and regret selling it every day since 2017. I was recently in the market again for another fun car after I made a huge profit on my B8 S4. I was looking at B5s again and almost bought one again. But all the ones near me were high mileage and high on price. Ended up with a clean, low mileage B6 A4 instead for a killer deal. But agree with you on the B5 though.

Why did you get rid of the b8?

@@klamjr the oil was really sparkly with copper bits which=no bueno lmao but I sadly lost my K04 B6 due to someone hitting it while parked and currently drive an E90 328i 6spd. It's nice and fun but, I'm an Audi boy and looking for a B9 S4

Beautiful looking car, but unreliable. Jackal sauce gives it a few ponies and flames out the back, but in no way shape or form an RS4. Not even close. Two completely different 4.2s.
