AN EXPLANATION OF THE ORNAMENTS AND CEREMONIES THAT ARE USED IN THE HOLY SACRIFICE OF THE MASS. All the ceremonies employed in and about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass tend to instruction, and to the commemoration of the death and Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ in compliance with His own command," Do this for a commemoration of Me" [Luke xxii. 19] ; that is, Do this in memory of My Passion. This is plainly to be observed in the Altar and it's ornaments as likewise in the garments in which the Priest is vested. The Altar reminds us of Mount Calvary, whereon Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, and the Second Person of the most Blessed Trinity, Our Redeemer,was crucified upon a reproachful Cross; which very Word "Altar" has relation to sacrifice, which must necessarily be offered to God in that Church where His true faith is professed; and therefore this name of Altar is mentioned by St Paul, Heb. xiii. 10 : " We have an Altar whereof they have no right to eat who serve the tabernacle;"and 1 Cor. xi. 23, as it is likewise in St Matthew v. 24. All of which is sufficient warrant for us to use the name of Altar ; which is also represents the table whereon Our Saviour celebrated His Last Supper with His Apostles the night before he suffered. The CORPORAL AND LINEN CLOTHS that cover the Altar typify the linen cloth that wrapped the sacred Body of Christ when He was laid in the sepulchre. The CANDLES lighted on the Altar typify the light of faith revealed to the Jews and Gentiles ; and they remind us of the great splendor, both of faith and of good life and works required in the celebration of so high and dread a mystery. The CRUCIFIX betokens our our blessed Redeemers victory over death, and is placed in the midst of the Altar to represent to our mind the death and Passion of Jesus Christ, which is there chiefly to be considered and piously meditated on in that holy sacrifice. The CHALICE betokens the holy sepulchre of Our Lord. The PATEN typifies the stone which was rolled against the door of the same sepulchre.

OF THE GARMENTS WHEREWITH THE PRIEST IS VESTED DURING THE TIME OF MASS. The AMICE is a white linen veil which the Priest first rests on his head and then fastens round his shoulders. It typifies the veil with which the Jews covered the face of Christ when they buffeted Him in the house of Caiphas and bade Him prophesy who it was that struck Him. [Matthew xxvi. 68.] The ALB is a white linen garment. It typifies the white garment which Herod put on Christ after he had despised and mocked Him. [Luke xxiii. 11.] The MANIPLE that the Priest wears on his left arm, the STOLE that hangs about his neck, and the CINCTURE with which he girds himself typify the cords and fetters with which the officers of the Jews bound Christ, and led Him from one place to another. [John CVIII. 28.] the CHASUBLE, or upper vestment, typifies the purple garment with which Jesus was clothed in derision as a mock king in the house of Pilate. [John xix. 27.] upon this garment is a large Cross, to remind us of that which Christ bore to Calvary.
