Excellent review! I still prefer the Gustard a26 as it's very airy and detailed, yet not cold or analytical. According to your comments on this Topping a decent tube preamp would be needed to add body and fullness and remove hard edges common to all highend analytical dacs. Thank you for your excellent work that benefits our community.

Mr. Worth It, Excellent review! Thank you! I would like to mention to you my recent Topping experience. I own the D90III Sabre. This, as you know, is a very revealing, very detailed, very black-background DAC. I recently purchased the Topping U90 USB Bridge, mainly out of curiosity. I was completely happy and satisfied with the performance of the D90III, but wanted to see if I could push the performance of the DAC a little bit further. Well...... Wow! Once connected through IIS, the detail level went from very, very good to incredible. And, SUBSTANTIALLY more impressive, the blackness of the background became even more black. When I say black, I mean BLACK. Eerily black. I have always heard the expression "the sound comes from nothing" when referring to background blackness, and I thought I knew what that meant. I was wrong. Since you have the D90III Sabre and Discrete models at your dispossal, I would HIGHLY encourage you to try them with the U90 interface using IIS connection. Love your channel and your unbiased review style. Keep up the good work! And, again, thanks!

@@harryfattbak8740 I like to use a DDC too! I use a tiny (8cm x 6cm x 1.3cm), cheap ($50) SMSL PO100PRO with an Xmos xu316 chip. It’s powered by its usbc input and it outputs to optical, coax and I2s. Its supports I2S: PCM up to 32bit 768kHz, Native DSD up to DSD512. As well as Optical / Coaxial: PCM up to 24bit 192kHz, DSD DoP up to DSD64. It has its own internal clock. Jitter: 75ps. I use it to convert usbc to optical, in order to completely isolate any electronics noise from the phone/laptop etc when connecting to my mojo2. It sounds so much better, with lower noise floor and darker background than just plugging the phone straight into the usb c port. All the best!

I'm always here for your reviews. You don't sugar coat things so therefore your opinion comes across as genuine. If you get the opportunity, please review the Aiyima A70 Mono. I like how you talk about tone and timbre along with pacing/timing. These are important (vital) aspects to music playback. Some machines do it better than others and not all things that measure well sound good. Keep up the great work that you do! I appreciate it a lot! Also, I just bought the Fiio FT1 headphones which I bought at an extremely low price (I think they made a mistake when they posted the price as I haven't seen it for that price since). They're a great all-round headphone with reasonable passive noise isolation. They might be worth a review from you!

Whenever I hear the words, "Topping" and "Discrete" used in the same sentence, I get excited, VERY excited. As a long term user of 4 LA90 Discrete amps (all run in mono), Pre-90 preamp and D90SE Dac, all as part of an active setup using Lii Audio F18 and F6 drivers in an open baffle set up, I can say that everything that has been said in terms of detail retrieval, resolution and overall musicality is correct. You are in the concert hall, you are in the recording studio. Having said all that, if the discrete version of D90 does everything as well as has been described, I may well have the need to go on bended knee to the Lady of the House seeking to have the purse strings opened again!
@windv
@windv Күн бұрын
Hey Stephan. I am also building an open baffle setup and still in the process of figuring it out. The road with passive crossover didn't work well with the woofers I got and I am looking at DSPs now. How do you filter your creations? :)
@StephanSycz
@StephanSycz 16 сағат бұрын
@@windv Hello. In my case the Lii Audio drivers are all full range, so filtering does not present a major problem. My system consists of 4 F18's (two per channel, wired in parallel) operating from approx. 240hz down to Fs, and a further 2 F18's and 2 F6-s's (one each per channel, wired in parallel) operating from 240hz up. My active crossover is a simple Citronic cx34, hardly so-called audiophile stuff, but works splendidly and adds little or nothing sonically. From the outset, I decided to keep the signal path in the analogue domain, as to me it makes no sense to buy the likes of the Topping DAC, only to then have the results subsequently diminished by lesser quality DSP conversion/filtering. To maximise the results, good room treatment is essential, as well as careful attention being paid to reducing mains hash. I find that using something called a "digital noise suppressor", basically a ferrite ring that can be placed over either end of both power and signal cables, works extremely well. Most electrical parts stores should stock them. I hope all of the above "guff" helps you out. Good luck with your project. Regards, Stephan.
@windv
@windv 8 сағат бұрын
@@StephanSycz thanks for the detailed reply. It's great for you that you could get the big speakers from lii and could also keep you signal path analog. I also had this wish, but it turns the speakers I used are not that easy to implement passive crossover with. Have you uploaded photos of your project somewhere? I would love to see it!

Great review, nice to see Topping back with a nice dac. I like all the strong points but would have liked a few % more warmth/fullness in the mix. I´m afraid a to detailed, fast and neutral sound could be fatuiging with my already detailed speakers. Guess the Cyan is the closest to my liking but I really don´t like the copper accents 🙈 (as long I can´t hide somewhere I will never buy it). Both of these DACs are so good that in most cases winner would be determined by better system matching. It's like choosing a right type of vehicle for the right kind of road. I have been looking at the Holo Cyan 2 to go with my Dynaudio Evoke 20, and this review has just blurred my choice of DAC. The Holo Cyan 2 apparently can sound different according to what you feed it, ie, upsampling from the source. The Evoke 20 are warm sounding speakers and so pairing with a non warm DAC is important ( I think). Now I am leaning a little towards this Topping DAC. Like someone else commented on here, you cannot audition any of these DACs and so it is a "leap of faith". One thing I absolutely don't want is any harshness, and the Topping's high level of detail may be too much perhaps when playing all my thousands of tracks on random, and showing up the poor recordings too much. I welcome any opinions and suggestions as to which DAC to go for, given my already warm speakers.

I hope you like it and worry not. Even though D90 III discrete is technically better (more revealing and faster), there's some magic and naturalness to R2Rs that is addictive. Also, I think that Ares is a good match for A90D. Mixing of different tonalities is usually a good thing. Doubling on the same character may be too much of it.

New Subscriber from Japan - Thank-you, for your very detailed DAC reviews. My question is - I have been planning on upgrading to either the HOLO CYAN 2, the LAIV Harmony DAC, Denafrips Venus 15th -or- the latest Gustard $2K+ model..... Which would you, **other subscribers*** recommend? N.B. - I am a big fan of R2R - I have had the Denafrips Pontus 12th in my system for a while... Many, many thanks!! (I listen to pretty much most genres of music aside from modern 'pop' & jazz). p.s. Very important fact - I *don't stream* via my hi-fi system - I have a top-level CD Transport and still prefer CD's ..... I only stream **via my computer ** w/ a good enough slightly lower-tier Topping DAC w/ a more than good enough sound for my desk-top needs.

Have the Laiv and the Venus 12th. Hard call and it will depend on the rest of your system. Imaging is better on the Venus but can sound a bit lean depending on the preamp/amp combo. Tone and warmth better on the Laiv, and works well with class d or anything that I have tried. I stream from Arce.

Mhm, isn't the X30 not about 3k Euro? But what shall we expect in this case if the D90III discrete sounds already similiar good as the half priced Gustard R26, which is for around 1.5k? Without hearing the Topping but AS an owner of a R26 I think the X30 is one the best sounding DAC at this time. Of course, the differences in such price ranges will be not as big as someone expect but they are existing. Greetings, Michael

A6 ME will sound better with a NOS dac upsampled to 176.4 KHz (EOS turned off). Bifrost 2/64, cyan 2 or an R26 would make a good match. If you're looking for an analog sound, I'd avoid the hype up topping with the cheap switching power supply.

These DAC reviews are all such bullshit. Your system will sound like the room, speakers and amp you're listening to. Your amount of hearing loss and personal preferences will determine if those three elements paired together are pleasing to you or not. A tube amp driving a pair of Klipsch horns will sound exactly like a tube amp driving a pair of Klipsch horns no matter what DAC you are using. The same is true for any other compilation of room, amp, anatomy and speakers. I will never understand how we ended up with thousands of videos about a component that might optimistically have a 5% impact on sound, and even then is totally subjective based on individual human anatomy. Tube amp vs solid state vs class D amps have obvious sonic differences. High sensitivity horn speakers vs two way box speakers vs open baffles have obvious sound differences. Treated vs untreated rooms have obvious differences. Why are we spending so much time on a component that has almost indiscernible differences?

I'm also fascinated by humans and find this DAC topic absolutely fascinating on many levels. Our ability to blur the lines between objective and subjective reality and place importance in arbitrary things is truly remarkable. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the thousands of DAC vids. It's been proven time and time again that discerning different dacs in a blindfold study always ends in a 50/50 outcome and yet the videos just keep coming 😂 humans are fascinating!
