i'm surprised at how much "empty space behind the walls" you're able to find in your house.... i wonder if the person who built the house was able to predict that "Bob who likes to make stuff" would live there one day and start knocking down walls; and hence designed it that way...

As it’s the attic I guess a few things: 1) Easier to convert and decorate a room that is mostly ‘square’. The higher the walls, easier it is to decorate and put things like TVs, furniture, hang photos etc. It probably also helps with heating the room and insulating it. Also remember it’s a living space so people need to be able to walk about without stooping... 2) You need to leave space for ventilation, possibly even maintenance of roof or equipment. 3) They may have been things such as heating system up there. In The UK it’s not unknown to have a cold water tank as well as a boiler in the attic as generally we don’t use the attic space. 4) could even be as something as simple as cost

This is a typical I think of a 1 1/2 story house. They built into the attic but the way they did the roof framing they either do ceiling that tapers down to like 2 feet off the ground and you hit your head on them all the time or they cut into room space by making the ceiling proper height all throughout the room. So it's give and take on both sides. Was going to do this exact same thing with my 1 1/2 story I used to own

Me too ! In my house the rooms go all the way to the far end of the roof and the floor. I was wondering why it wasn't used before or build like that. I live in a region where the price per square meter is really high so maybe it's because of that.

Well, usually internal brick walls don't go up to the roof. If you have such a space you could do the same. Then again big unfinished attics aren't really a thing in Europe like they are in the US. Having a standing height top floor (under slanted roof) is something you have chose when buying/building a house.

Blown insulation.
@murphymmc
@murphymmc 3 жыл бұрын
It's a cellulose insulation, very effective and nowhere as irritating as fiberglass. Also about twice as effective as blown in fiberglass as it does not lend itself to thermal convection, meaning that the colder it gets, it still works, blown in fiberglass loses about half it's rated performance at sub sub-freezing temps. Owners of the fiberglass companies know this and tend not to use their own product. J.D. Powell tested. Old news though. That's been known for 20 yrs. but it's not trendy to use cellulose in roofs. Funny that it's still prevalent in a blown in batt application for a high performance wall. Cuz it works.

@@johnanthony44 Highly recommended. I have blown the stuff in before, and it still is pretty itchy. Not nearly as bad as fiberglass, but its basically shredded newspaper plus a fire retardant. It throws a ton of dust into the air when you blow it and realistically fine paper is not good for your lungs. Plus sneezing it for a couple of days is not pleasant. I had one piece I sneezed that still had legible text from whatever it was recycled from something like two days later. Better than fiberglass by a long shot.

2:52 Twelve inches of under-floor space... Great spot to have access panels for under-floor storage space ! Think off-season coats, shoes, sports equipment, games, puzzles, etc. For sub-floor storage 5:56, I see you actually have about 1ft PLUS the 8in height between floor joists that you can use... (where that loose insulation was sitting 6:00 ) Just add in 3/4 in plywood between the joists at bottom, to support weight of contents and allow people to stand in that storage space without falling through. 8:28 It looks like you have LOTS of nice space behind the closet's back wall & side wall too, as you mention at 10:02, built shelves at 12:17, and have finished look at 16:22 ...Good Deal ! One of those shelf units could be removable, to give access to attic space too. 16:29 Nice shelves on right, built into wall gap space... 16:39 you DO mention. If you put a raised 2in edge on front of those shallow shelves, they make little pocket bins which hold more stuff without falling out on the floor. Good closet build, I'm sure the boys like their new space !
