So I have an AirSense 10 Bipap. I don’t know how to raise my pressure my a notch or two. But all the doctor wanted to do is send me for a $5600.00 sleep test. SMH. How can I bump the pressure up by one and try it ?

When I got my Philips 5 years ago, they set it to 5 to 20, I changed it to 5 to 15. After several weeks he said let's set it to 8 to 15, I said no, my lowest pressure is right around 9, so I'll set it to 9 and turn on the Auto start feature( forget what it's called it would remember your lowest setting from all the previous nights and start it there) and set the max to 14. He asked how I knew about that one feature, I could tell he didn't know about it. We'll we never changed it after that.bjust got a Prisma 20A, and sleep better, and mi AHI has even hone down, always between 0 and 1, can't get better than that. Keep up the great work.

I didn't get a police beat down but a particularly painful lecture that it's not good to change my pressure based on research online. I get it, doc. Don't take medical advice you get online. Doc did not advise on what to do when doc only cares about resmed report card. I sought advice online about this lack of advice from doc and now I'm just lost in a perpetual loop. Srsly tho. It's dangerous that sleep medicine is so bad that the only alternative is online support. Drs are conditioning their patients to expect nothing but chastise them for seeking info elsewhere. Someone should call the cops on them. You're awesome, lefty, thank you ❤

@@Freecpapadvice I learned it all from you, back when SleepyHead was the program to use. They had my starting pressure at like 6, I’m 6’2 300lbs, I felt like I was trying to breath through a straw. I called my DME and they said “just try it for a month”. Looked at the data on SleepyHead, and saw I was going up to 12 once I fell asleep, so I changed my starting pressure to 12, and I’ve had an AHI under 1 for 8 years, and haven’t fallen asleep behind the wheel since then. If I hadn’t started CPAP, I’m not sure I’d be alive today. I had fallen asleep driving twice once I started, and fell asleep at my desk all the time, and it wasn’t a “oh man I’m sleepy, I should find a place to stop” it was a “oh crap, I’m going to sleep right now”. The last time it happened, I woke up in a grass median while on I-30 in Arkansas, with the cruise set to 75mph.

Jason, I almost had police action at my sleep doctor appointment 8 days ago. I had discontinued my psych meds 3 months after last year's appointment. My neurologists and sleep doctors always told me to get off psych meds because it was causing my sleep apnea. My sleep quality deteriorated a lot since I went off the meds. I started falling asleep while watching TV again - something that I experienced prior to CPAP therapy. I decided to be a real smart ass and printed off two OSCAR reports for my doctor - 08/23 - 11/23 (on psych meds); the other from 11/23 - 08/24 (off meds), which I delineated on the top of the reports. She looked at both reports thoughtfully and said, "You sleep much better on psych meds!" Very hard to keep a straight face after that comment, lol. I knew my RERAs were really bad, which she noted, too. She said, "You're not on a fixed pressure now?" I blamed it on our cleaning lady (not a Stewie) on this. I know how to get into clinical mode, just like my doc can, but I pleaded ignorance! Honestly, I don't know what happened there, but it showed my avg pressure was 14.75 (I was on 14, at least I thought), so my doc increased my setting to 15. Since this change, I've been sleeping better. Be your own health advocate - upload OSCAR. And keep watching Jason, too😊

UK NHS patient here. My sleep clinic only look at AHI and hours used via Airview, nothing else at all. They also didn't 'prescribe' a pressure , it was just set at APAP 4-20. After my month review they just told me to get in touch in a year for replacement bits unless there's a problem. Pretty poor really. I've learnt so much l from your and other channels and using Oscar I pretty sure I could do a better job myself! If I hadn't changed settings myself I think I'd be struggling with it. Great channel and info 👍

Wanted to add, I have turned my machine off in the middle of the night for some weird reason, then fell back to sleep with the mask still on, woke up a couple hour later. I'm still here. I had a sleep study years ago, they said I had apnea. The apnea got worse, they wanted to do another study said it would take 6 months for that and cost thousands. I said screw that. I bought my Autoset 10 machine used (only 1000 hours, no smoke smell, $300), mask was new, from some dude on craigslist, works great, had to learn everything. Your videos helped a lot. AHI is averaging under 1.

You’re right I just got a trial machine to take for a run at the sleep place. My pressure is set to 5 as well it’s way too low for my moderate sleep apnea where I quit breathing every 27 times in an hour. I feel just rank. I’m so exhausted and fatigued still it’s been two weeks. The pressure is to blame I’ll turn mine up with my own machine I think I need to set it to 9 at least.

The fact you need a prescription is the crime here. Doctors telling you that you can’t change pressure are committing fraud. Doctors can discuss potential issues snd give advice, but Doctors do not own us. No doctor has the knowledge or concern about my condition that I do. Changing pressure without patient consent should result in jail time. WE IWN OUR BODIES. USE OF CPAP IS DETERMINED BY THE PATIENT, NOT THE DOCTOR.

My provider sent me home with a CPAP. The next day, I felt horrible because the pressure was set to 4-20. I tinkered with the pressure using OSCAR and zeroed in on a small range. I went to my next appointment a week later and told them I used OSCAR, and they said "that's not safe to download, someone told me it has viruses." It had some serious "don't download that .mp3.exe file from Limewire" vibes.

I learned to change CPAP pressure years ago from friend in Australia, who is a Mensa IT guy (not saying that high IQ is required as it’s so easy). Back when ebay allowed sales of used cpap machines, he would have me buy them for him. (Sellers typ wd not ship overseas from USA.) I wd check to see if they ran, box them up again and ship to Oz (USPS was cheapest and fast, with tracking). Cpap prices there were so high, it would still pencil for him to tweak them and then re-sell at quite a profit. He’s the type that took them apart to see how they worked and put them back together again. Learned a lot about various brands and types back then. Then (2008?) when I had the opportunity to go to Oz on a biz gig, I bought several on his behalf, put them in a spare large suitcase and we Qantas’d them to small hotel near Sydney. He met me in the lobby to retrieve all the loot. Puzzled guy at the desk said, “Oh, I see we’re traveling light!”. Had a great time in Oz, traveling with my cpap. 💤

I have been given the gears on more than one occasion by the respiratory therapist. It take me 3 months to get an appointment to see them, just to have them drop my pressure to the prescription which makes me feel like crap...11cm. I get home and within 10 minutes, I change it back to 15 with EPR of 1 and babies do not sleep as well as I do at 15.

I changed my CPAP settings from 7-12 to 4-7 after losing 40+ pounds over the last 12 months. I was pushing the obese level BMI of 30 (I was at 29.9) and I lower it to the low 23's BMI. Half way through my journey, I started to have issues keeping a good mouth seal, so lowering my pressures improved it greatly. My AHI is always below 2.0 and it usually below 1.0 most of the time! My DME had liked the changes and applied them to my recent upgrade to the ResMed AutoSense 11. I've been using a CPAP since retiring from the military in 2009...using ResMed machines since the beginning of my treatment.

My "sleep doctor" was a NP. Really didn't care if I changed everything. what I learned was that maybe the cpap could work but my throat couldn't handle it and the machine couldn't do it long enough. So what happened? His assistant was actually very helpful but the problem was that I needed another solution. Luckily I found a dental sleep appliance that works well, Took 6 months or so to get used to it. not cheap but medicare will pay for one I think if you are old enough.

Medicare will pay for a mouth device. Five years ago when I got my Medicare covered apnea dental device, it only fully covered a really clunky device. It was very uncomfortable and made my TMJ worse, and did not help my apnea, plus I could not close my mouth. Hope Medicare cover the more comfortable mouth devices now.

3:40 Be careful about changing pressure yourself and then depending upon Airplane Mode to protect you, because, for example, my sleep center does not seem to use transmitted data for compliance at all...they ONLY obtain compliance data by inserting THEIR SD CARD into my machine at the beginning of my office visits to instantly retrieve all data from the machine, INCLUDING ALL DAILY PRESSURE SETTINGS. And, if you have changed your settings at any time from "AS PRESCRIBED BY A PHYSICIAN", then IMHO the following applies: "All states and insurance companies put out clearly defined statements on what is and is not a "covered service". Every single one of these statements I've seen specifically restricts covered services to medical devices as prescribed by a physician (or equivalent thereof) and distributed by a pharmacy, DME, etc. Well, it should be obvious to everybody here that once you've changed your pressures your machine is no longer "as prescribed by a physician". Continuing to use that machine is therefore no longer a covered service. That means that any money billed to Medicare or your insurer for your CPAP care - be it in machine rental, mask replacement, etc - after you changed your pressure without telling anybody would...". I'm not convinced that "illegal" is accurate, here, but at a minimum I think you could lose coverage... probably retroactively back to when you strayed from "as prescribed by a physician". The above quoted section can be found here: www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic/t56845/Why-it-IS-illegal--sort-of--to-change-your-pressure.html

Would like to know what causes the feeling of being suffocated when you can't breathe through mask. I've used CPAP for 11 years with no problem at all. Now I periodically wakie up because I suddenly can't inhale with the mask on. Since it's early morning (5 am), I end up falling asleep without the mask because I'm still tired,. This causes scalene, SCM tightness and even rib issues since I am using accessory muscles to breathe. Of course my pulmomologist says he sees no problems and my overnight oxygen showed my oxygen levels were fine. It's like you report, the doctor says my usage and AHI is good, but I feel dismissed by the medical profession.

🚩 So I have an AirSense 10 Bipap. I don’t know how to raise my pressure my a notch or two. But all the doctor wanted to do is send me for a $5600.00 sleep test. SMH. How can I bump the pressure up by one and try it ?

Too much or too little can be a problem.

@@Freecpapadvice so how does that question get settled? What is good pressure for each person? I feel its not high enough. The PA wouldn’t go any higher on my pressure. Apparently I am at the top pressure and my body can forget how to breathe….

@@guymontana5338 APAP machines (Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset etc) are good for this... you set a range, then sleep a few nights... see where the machine wants to take you... then set a min pressure above that. Once you get it drawing a flat pressure line most of the night that's your good pressure.

I’m calling BS on this. It sounds like a scare tactic employed by that doctor. I would probably be dead if I hadn’t taken treatment into my own hands , largely following advice from yourself. I’ve purchased my machines outright as they’re not regarded as essential medical devices and eligible for government subsidies or benefits here in Australia. My cat Chuck is a known miscreant but so far hasn’t worked out how to access my settings. 👍🏻

I would think that anyone who has the expertise toter a cap machine into a bipap machine can 1) afford to buy the bipap machine, and 2) is using up a lot of their valuable time. I suspect they do it for the same reason that people climb mountains.

How do I fight my doctor I know I need O2 from a digital O2 monitor dropping to 74, I hear I have issomana one more time I am going to have a QR code tattooed to my chest for the Coroner.

your Dr should easily order you an at home overnight test. Its basically the same thing as the otc o2 rings but medically officially approved so they can review the data. I knew I was dropping during REM from months of data from my o2 ring and apple watch and since it was confirmed with the overnight test, the Dr ordered me oxygen the next day. If your Dr is trying to just poopoo the idea you need oxygen overnight and wont order you a test, then get another Dr. I've been on it for a yr now and it eliminates my all o2 drops below 90. On the occasion I travel and dont have oxygen you can clearly see my drops again.

Airbreak is the one where the machine does everything... confusing, unsatisfying, and unwieldy. Best is to just read the firmware from an Aircurve 10 and put it into an Airsense 10... like I did! 1800$ machine for 300$ brand new. Does not work on the 11 series.

Yes but unfortunately the most illegal option. The whole reason airbreak exists is to modify your own firmware. But let's be honest...

A machine that Insurance won’t replace until 5 years with a two year warranty! 😂 My Airsense 11 doesn’t work, sent back for warranty came back and still doesn’t work properly. Warranty expired. Purchased an airsense 10 auto set for 399.99, at CPAP Shop, much better machine.

I changed mine just a bit like start at 4 up to say 18 not that much right, but was told to leave it as the time might come when i might need it ect. I’m in Australia and went to a sleep clinic, after two years I’m really on my own now anyway. Sometimes get a yearly review due to driving report. Love your channel. 🇦🇺✅🧑‍🦳
