Matthew Winchell talks to JP about his impressive self-built motion control rig. Matt's build is a reproduction of John Knoll's setup that was used to film miniature shots of the Razor crest ship in Mandalorian season one. We discuss this project and its challenges, as well as other interesting projects that Matt is working on.

Matt Winchell might be the next Douglas Trumbull. Trumbull engineered the effects for 2001 in his 20s.

I was actually thinking about doing this myself. It seemed doable but a lot of work for not a lot of pay back (for me). So I built an arcade machine for my basement instead. Oh well there's always next year.

I agree that effects compliment the story. An effect comes from a need to tell a story. James Cameron is a visionary but the effect leads his stories. I will always like his early films

If you have the space, there's a very inexpensive way to get incredibly accurate motion control. ( Industrial robots ) they cost a lot new but if they are outdated you can sometimes get them for a few hundred euros.

They need software packages to be used for moco. Can be done but not exactly easy. Probably easier to build a 4 axis slider.

I am playing with an off the shelf slider and PTZ head which is all app controlled to try and film some miniatures, I may end up building my own motion control system at some point, the work Matthew has done is awesome, thanks for this very inspiring video.

Very cool, although I was little disappointed because I thought he built one of the original Dykstraflex Motion Controllers.

your videos are just getting better and better and better and better... till today I thought motion control rigs are expensive and only elite class filmmakers can afford it... watching this video, bought that thought down to human level... my gosh do you have any video which we can call "Meh", I would love to see those videos too... 😁...

Being "inspired" to steal another idea is one thing, to claim expertise that is equal is another and you failed in doing so. I'd say nice try, but there wouldn't be a point to be made, when you provided the answer to any argument. 😉
