She was relegated to backup parts because of Gordy's push to make Diane his star pet project, at the expense of the other talents that Flo especially, and Mary brought to the group. Their relationship was paramount to anyone else ever being identified as the true foundation of The Suptemes.

Actually in their earlier performances they often used overhead microphones Often just one That one usually wasn't placed in the middle, but closer to Diana, to capture her voice better, as she had a softer voice Still Florence could be heard clearly and Mary too, as she was second close to the mic In later performences Diana often had her own mic, holding in her hands or sometimes a second overhead mic, just for her with higher level to control her volume louder and to allow the sound engineer to amplify her vocals separately That's when the group sound started to get lost

Mary was actually the most beautiful in the face and looked great in her gowns with her lean, but not skinny, figure. If you see nothing special about Mary and Flo it means that you weren't born during The Supremes' era and see revisionist history through a "Ross as a solo act" inspired lens. Dreamgirls is a cute and humorous re-telling of The Supremes’ story but this group DESERVES a film depicting their real life journey at Motown. The Temptations have a bio film for nearly 20 years but Supremes fans have to live with Dreamgirls?! Are they not Motown’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful act? Are they not TO DATE one of the most successful American vocal groups of all time setting a precedence for groups such as Destiny’s Child and TLC? We need a film on the Supremes like NOW!
