Now if only we could get all the people conditioned by Fox "news" to overcome their brainwashing and stop believing in absolute bullshit as truth and truth to be fake news; and to get people to know that TV preachers, megachurches, and prosperity gospel preachers are all cults too and dangerous ones at that, then America could heal and become stronger as a nation again. Trump has weakened America with hatred and prejudices and his damned ego.

She was raised in this lunacy so she didn't get the whispered secret of "this is all bullshit, just go along with it." She was raised being told the awful things she was doing were loving, so when confronted with the fact she was actually hurting people, she dealt with that dissonance by questioning what she was taught... and discovering on her own "Oh wait! Turns out this is all bullshit!" It's the same basic thing that happened to that guy who was raised by neo-Nazis. He was grew up sincerely believing the bullshit he was taught, but he wasn't raised to be a terrible person. So, it was only when he was exposed to more information, and information that expanded his worldview, that he, as a genuine person, examined what he'd been brought up believing and recognized that it was bullshit.

@@MelinWisconsin Just a tip from someone who used to be in your position: I would take the time to relearn our own cultural history here in America, there really is so much progress made at such an unprecedented speed in our Country and it helped me gain a second perspective on these difficult times. The real reason we're all aware of these problems is simply because People gain awareness before they gain power over a problem. Time and time again humans have re-conquered our own mentalities and cultures to improve life in ways those before them could not even imagine. Those change-makers will be your child's generation, and it will most likely wont come from a government, or a company, or any solution you or I could conceive- but it will change life for the better, as it always has.

DV correct but don't assume that people can't become intellectually curious. the intelligence thing, while for big parts genetical, is not set in stone either IMO. Also be aware that the intelligence we quantify is relatively low resolution. It doesn't represent the entire spectrum of human intelligence. Also don't assume that fanatics are generally speaking not intelligent. You'd be surprised. From the studies i've read actually fanaticism, political extremism and such is actually most common with people that are further from the average. This includes highly intelligent people as it also does include very unintelligent people. the whole thing isn't one dimensional though. People can generally speaking always change. By dismissing 99% of the world as incapable of discourse and positivity you're basically doing what the westboro baptist church does Lol. Think about it.

Take the high ranking NSDAP members and other convicted military personnel of the third reich etc which took IQ tests at the Nuremberg trials... All of them except Julius Streicher had IQs above 125 with many reaching waaay beyond even into the 160s. Tons of them had IQs in the 140s. We're talking about a standard deviation of 15. Some of those people were fanatical ideologues too or at least pretended to be (you actually see that happen often with very intelligent people, they know how to manipulate). Intelligence is not everything. Intelligence can be used for great evil. It's a powerful tool.

@fieldy409
@fieldy409 4 жыл бұрын
@Kasper Kleine Tank Islam in general isn't even that bad, I think you are mostly talking about wahabism. Wahabism is an ultra conservative intepretation that got very lucky because Saudi Arabia supported it and Saudi Arabia got very lucky when they discovered they had all that oil to fund lots of things to help wahabism like the construction of wahabist mosques and printing of wahabist quorans. So wahabism got spread all around. Saudi Arabia only exists thanks to England and France making the Sykes Picot agreement drawing up their crazy map of the middle east cutting it up for their colonisation(that didn't really end up happening) with no regard for geography or what cultures lived there, thats why there are straight lines there on the map somebody drew them with a ruler with no idea what was under them. The crazy thing too about the Sykes-Picot agreement was that it was a betrayl of arabs since they had promised the arabs they'd help them create a unified kingdom after their help getting rid of the Ottoman empire. But really you should create your own posts about it instead of hijacking others, otherwise it kind of looks like you are trying to 'what about' the topic away from discussing white nationalists and nazis. Plus remember the lessons of this former westboro baptist church member Megan, we are all people remember to have empathy even with the extremists!

@@williamresham703 (this is old but JK Rowling witch trials brought me here). This is the logical error I keep seeing, and Megan's duplicity. She says reason and respectful challenge changed her views. But she also disavow Christianity based on Westboro's interpretation of the Bible. She says it is arrogance and hubris that allow one to have complete confidence in their interpretations, but then she feels she can hand wave away Jesus--not to mention centuries of biblical scholarship--based on the strawman her grandfather created. She says the bible has circular logic, but cannot see her own. The duplicity is maddening and shows reasoning is not the whole issue here.

Megan Phelps is inspiring. I love her story and I really appreciate learning that for as hurtful as Westboro is, they think they are being loving. That is so valuable to understand. How many extremists are this way? I don’t know. I expect the majority of bad ideas stem from fear, not “love”, but it is very important to find out what motivates extremist views.

@Tom Smith I don't think it's so much about giving her praise for being a normal decent human being ... I think it's more about the message she is trying to send about how others made it possible for her to reflect about her own actions by actually listening and asking thoughtful and relevant questions pertaining to her beliefs instead of attacking and ridiculing her. Being treated with kindness and as an equal, made her stop and think and re-evaluate her very own belief system; don't you think that is a powerful message on how to deal with those you thoroughly disagree with?

Sarah hits a homerun yet again. She is so talented & thoughtful. Megan Phelps-Roper is so brave to leave that terrible, life destroying cult. 100% talented comedian & talented interviewer too. Sarah has always been very thoughtful. Great job, truly... Megan has done the right thing 100% Great to see this interview.

You can really tell that the people who have left the cult (because it’s NOT a church) have really benefited from leaving, I used to despise Megan but now I love her for her bravery in leaving and now she can be a conduit for change imo

Challenge the Extremists. Make them change their minds for the better. She was exposed and she understood. But more importantly she was OPEN to learn and was able to put herself in the other’s perspective. Most people cannot do that.....

Megan is truly amazing. She has tremendous courage and confidence. Even in this interview which was supposed to be supportive, ended up being fairly critical. I give her so much credit for being willing to the the difficult and often unfair things, for the right cause. She's a true role model.

I think rejecting bad doctrine is one of the most difficult things to do as a human. Leaving your family and every community tie you’ve built since childhood is heart-wrenching. Starting over must be so hard but she seems to be doing it with love and intentionality. I pray her family sees the truth and they can be reunited again some day.

Really fascinated by the psychological shift that Megan went through. I wish they spent more time talking about how exactly she let go of her former perceptions. Also worth noting is that you can really see how much Sarah loves her - at least that's what I saw. Really incredible warmth between those 2.

Her story is fascinating and she is very nice. I am friends with one if the main Twitter "trolls" who challenged her and eventually became friends with her, and i met her in Jerusalem. It's an important lesson that however hateful her family and the WBC is (and she doesn't deny that for one second) they truly believe that the hate is doing God's work. To have to call into question everything you believe and then leave it behind you and go off alone is just astounding.

This mentality is exactly the same within the Jehovah’s Witnesses. They try to “warn” others of the end of the world. They are extremists as well. People who leave are shunned by their family just like this woman. This was a great interview.

During WW2 the Jehovas Witnesses would do similar things to Westboro. They were of course pacifists so would never join the military, but they'd go to the families of dead soldiers to tell them they're in hell and the end of the world is coming.

It's so weird to see her now. Don't get me wrong I'm really happy for her. I used to feel so bad for her. I remember years ago, like 2012ish, Kevin Smith talking about meeting and talking to her when his movie Red State, that was somewhat based in WBC, was released. I remember even back then that she actually seemed like a normal person, and thinking and hoping for that she would end up leaving someday. It was so awesome listening to his podcast where he gets to interview her after leaving the church.

I am a 32yr gay man that grew up in Topeka, ks. I know and have spoken to her cousins that were excommunicated before her rise to fame. I can tell you there is a lot more to her story, like what happened to Fred at the end ( I also wanna know more about his early days at southern tent revival meetings and his male friend).....maybe one day others, like her mother, will tell the tale.
